For those of you trying to keep tabs on the whereabouts of our Top Ten Dogs All Breeds, our Number One Dog was in Aliquippa PA picking up the big rosette from Evie Sullivan at the day one show of the Fort Steuben Kennel Association.  Also on hand were the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the Ottherhound, CH Adeline’s Sticky wicket, the Siberian Husky, GCH cH Kontoki’s A Bend In The Road, a Maltese from the Bred By Exhibitor class, Josymir’s More Than Just News, the Schipperke, CH Aned’s Le Rocher Noir, and the Shetland Sheepdog, CH Damingo Marksman's Hi Speed Bullet OAJ NAJ NA.   For those wondering, we are not likely to see a change in our top five standings this week.  Should there be a change, you will read it here first.

Just in from Ludwigs Corner PA, the Irish Terrier, GCH CH Fleet St Fenway Fan was Charlotte Clem McGowan’s BIS at today’s Devon Dog Show Association.  Fynn was accompanied by the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee’s Caught Red Handed, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Standard Schnauzer, GCH CH Pepper Tree Zorro V Morgenwald, the Toy poodle, GCH CCH Smash Jp Moon Walk, the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy, and the Puli, CH Cordmaker Rumpus Bumpus.  This BIS, with over 2500 entered, is by far the biggest of Fynn’s six all breed Bests this year.  Congratulations to breeders RC Carusi , Shari Boyd-Carusi & Stan Wodjewodski, owners Tony Barker & Victor Malzoni Jr, and handler RC Carusi.

GREATER VENICE FLORIDA DOG CLUB

Gemini’s Furst Draft

Let’s go back to Arcadia FL for a report on today’s Greater Venice Florida Dog Club.  Dr Roger Pritchard had his pick of the Golden Retriever, Gemini’s Furst Draft, the Basenji, CH Meisterhaus You Better Believe It JC, the Rottweiler, GCH CH Cammcastle’s My Gigolo, a Border Terrier from the 6 to 9 month old Puppy bitch class, Ristle Alley Hoop At Coldstream, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, GCH CH Mondrian VH Lamslag RE, the Lhasa Apso, GCH CH My Thai Ta Sen Halleluiah Chorus, and the Bouvier des Flandres, CH Optimus Prime de Boef (sic).   Best went to the Golden, Ruff.   We are pretty sure this was Ruff’s first BIS.  Congratulations to breeders Candi & Richard Pearce and owner Kathy Cudak.

THREEPEAT FOR THE PEKE

GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy

While waiting for the results from the big Devon Dog Show Association event today, we hear that the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, has abandoned his east coast compatriots and moved to Wauseon OH to pick up the BIS at today’s Fulton County OH show.  Malachy was joined in Robert Ennis’ final by the Black Cocker Spaniel, CH Lehigh’s Crystal Ball At Bluriver, the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Xenos Gimlet, the Giant Schnauzer, GCH CH Scansion’s Bacchus, the Lakeland Terrier, GCH CH Tallydale’s Fiend Of The Force, the Lhasa Apso, CH Northwind Nothing But Trouble, and GCH CH Mysharas Dream Girl.  If you have not been with us these past couple of days, Malachy and owner/handler David Fitzpatrick just picked up BIS trophies on Thursday & Friday at two of the year’s largest shows, but was not entered at today’s DDSA show.   Anyway you slice it, that’s three BIS in a row.

WE FORGOT FRIDAY IN FLORIDA

CH Bo-Bett’s Speed Demon

We take a break from our focus on national breed specialties and all the drama on the east coast to tell you about the fun in Arcadia FL.  At yesterday’s day two show of the Greater Naples Dog Club Arlene Czech assembled a stellar seven, the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Star K’s Mile Hi Valentine, the Whippet, CH Bo-Bett’s Speed Demon, the Boxer, GCH CH Hi-Tech’s Southern Belle, the Australian Terrier, CH Kambarra’s Bella Macchina RA, the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, the Lhasa Apso, GCH CH My Thai Ta Sen Halleluiah Chorus , and the Shetland Sheepdog, CH Leeason Rock My Soul.  Best went to the 13 month old Whippet, Demon, another great one from breeder/owner Carol Harris at Bo-Bett Farms.  Congratulations to Carol and handler Justin Smithey.

We continue with our reports on National Specialties with this from Oconomowoc WI (35 miles west of Milwaukee) where 167 Basset Hounds showed up for the regular classes of the Basset Hound Club of America’s National specialty this week.  Marjorie Wikerd BOB was GCH CH Blossomhill's Mamma Mia.  BOS was CH  Olde Fashion Talk About Buckeye Luck, BOW/WB was Soundtrack Grand Illusion, & WD (from the 9-12 Month Puppy class) was Topsfield Corkery Oscar Renta. Violet is bred and owned by Suzanne Sukey Shor and handled by Mike Stone.   Congratulations to Suzanne, Mike, and all the winners.

AMERICAN FOXHOUND CLUB

GCH CH Kiarry’s Walkin On Sunshine

It was fitting that America’s iconic breed, the American Foxhound, chose the iconic Morris and Essex Kennel Club show as the site of the American Foxhound Club’s 2010 National Specialty.   You could go to 17 dogs shows in a row and never see an American Foxhound, but Polly Smith had 17 from which to choose his BISS, not bad for a breed that only registers about 50 dogs a year.

Her Best of Breed was GCH CH Kiarry’s Walkin On Sunshine.  BOS went to CH Kiarry’s Foolish Pride, BW/WD was Crossroads Just Right Joe, & WB was the 10 month old puppy, Kiarry & Deluxe Adam’s Rib. BISS winner Katrina was bred by Dianna Jaeger, Donna Millman, & Lisa Miller, is owned by Harry & Lisa Miller and was shown to the win by Brittani Kettleson, standing in for regular handler Lisa Miller.  Our congratulations to team Katrina & all the entries and our special thanks to them all for preserving this living link to our American heritage.

NATIONAL BEAGLE CLUB

GCH CH Torquay Midnight Confession

As exciting as the all breed week has been, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention some of the excitement going on at the breed level.  We are aware of at least three National Breed Specialties this week.  First, the National Beagle Club has been out in Vancouver WA all week for their 2010 National.  When it was all over Steve Allmand chose the dazzling couple of the 15” Beagle, GCH CH Torquay Midnight Confession, and breeder/owner/handler Marcelo Chagas as BISS.  In the intervariety competition BOS went to 15” Beagle, CH Jabrowoki's A Canterbury Tail.

Additional winners were BOV, 13” Beagle, GCH CH Del Rey Roosevelt's Rough Rider, 13” BOS CH Skyline's Dream Big, 13” BW/WD  Copper Rose Merf the Smerf, & WB Albedo's Next Supermodel and in the 15” variety, BOS CH Jabrowoki's A Canterbury Tail, BW/WB Tortuga's Irishharpo'celtlan, & WD Ha-Penny's Double Ought Six.

Lola and Marcelo have collected 29 career all breed BIS, four shy of the breed record.  Our congratulations to all the winners and a special Brava! to Marcelo and co-breeders/owners Marco Flavio Botelho & Allesandra Botelho.

PEKE WOWS WITH BACK2BACK BIS

GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy

Morris and Essex has retired until 2015. The ladies have stowed their hats, packed the SUVs and pitched camp in Wrightstown  PA for today’s Hatboro Dog Club show.  Though not as large and Thursday’s grand ensemble, it was still one of this year’s largest shows with over 2500 entries.

Once again, it was some of the best in the dog world surviving to make into Jane Forsyth’s final.  The seven included five of  AKC’s Top Ten Dogs All Breeds.  They were the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the French Bulldog, GCH CH JustUs I'm Your Man, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Kridler's Nutmeg V Signature.

Normally this week is all about the Terriers, culminating in Sunday’s all Terrier Montgomery County Kennel Club show.  However, today the dog world is abuzz over the Peke, Malachy, as he saunters away with two of the season’s largest prizes.  This win brings him to just a breath behind the Number One Dog.  Our congratulations to breeders Jim & Jean Smith, owners Iris Love & Sandra Middlebrook, and owner/handler David Fitrzpatrick.

A GRAND REVIVAL

CH PalaceGarden Malachy

Somerset NJ isn’t Broadway, but it does know something about revivals.  The Morris and Essex Kennel Club show ran there  from 1927 through 1957.  It was revived in 2000 and has made an appearance every five years since then.  Today’s show featured exhibitors in vintage clothing and classic cars.  BIS judge Robert Forsyth has been in dogs nearly as long as Morris and Essex.  Nine of the Top Ten Dogs were entered and five of them made it to Bob’s final.

They were the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee’s Caught Red Handed. The Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the American Staffordshire Terrier, CH Castle Rock's Sbigstaff Mad About You, the Pekingese, CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy,  and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.  BIS would go to the smallest among them, the Peke, Malachy.

The huge win, puts Malachy and owner/handler David Fitzpatrick back in the Number Two Dog All Breeds spot.   Our top three are now locked in a close race for the National Title.  With two more big all breed shows to go in the area we expect lots of drama yet this weekend.

GREATER NAPLES DOG CLUB

GCH CH Kambara’s Zebulon

While we wait for results from Morris and Essex, we can tell you that an Australian Terrier GCH CH Kambara’s Zebulon, was Gary Doerge’s BIS at today’s Greater Naples Dog Club.  Rounding out the final were the ASCOB Cocker Spaniel, CH Shaman’s No Doubt About It, the 13” Beagle, CH Roirdan’s Lanbur Motor City, the Bullmastiff, CH Paradise’s and Woks Empire State, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, GCH CH Mondrian VH Lamslag RE, the Chow Chow, CH Liontamer’s Dial 1-800-Hotstuff, and the Shetland Sheepdog, GCH CH Leeason Rock My Soul.

It was the first BIS by an Australian Terrier in more than ten years.  Congratulations to breeders/owners Anne Mitchell & Craig Mitchell and handler Kellie Dahlberg.

TAFFE MCFADDEN

Taffe McFadden

Virtually everyone in the dog game has seen and admired professional handler Taffe McFadden.  Taffe and husband Bill McFadden have had handled multiple Top Ten Dogs over the past three decades, including 2008 Number One Dog All Breeds, the Giant Schnauzer, CH Galilee's Pure Of Spirit.  We have recently been made aware that Taffe is now facing perhaps the greatest challenge of her life.

Over the past several weeks Taffe has been fighting a rare form of cancer that has required three surgeries to combat.  Taffe faces a long, uphill climb against this disease and can use the prayers and thoughts of all of us in the dog show community  with whom she has shared so much.  We have first hand experience with cancer and know how physically, emotionally, and financially devastating fighting this disease can be.  You can leave your well wishes on The Friends of Taffe Face Book page and you can help Taffe with her considerable medical bills by making a donation on The Friends of Taffe internet site.

We know Taffe has plenty of support in Bill, her family, and friends, but we will be  keeping her in our prayers nonetheless and know that all of you out there will be doing the same.

CELEBRATE DOG SHOW TRADITIONS!

Morris and Essex Back In The Day

The dog game is all about traditions and this week, the fancy will flock to the east cost to participate.  First on the agenda is the resurrected Morris and Essex Kennel Club show.  The original was the grandest garden party ever envisioned, Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge's golden age event held from 1927 through 1957.  This year’s event, held on Thursday in Colonial Park in the Franklin Township in Somerset NJ, will be the largest show in the United States this year with 3091 entries.  There will be ladies in hats and gentleman in Harris Tweed.  If you want to get a glimpse of what dog shows used to be like, don’t miss it.

Morris & Essex will be followed on Friday & Saturday by the Hatboro Dog Club & Devon Dog Show Association all breed events in Wrightstown PA & Ludwigs Corner PA respectively.  The nostalgia filled weekend will culminate in the granddaddy of all limited breed shows the venerable all Terrier Montgomery County Kennel Club show in Blue Bell PA.

If you can’t make it to Main Line for the east coast shows, we have some reasonable substitutes.  The Greater Naples Dog Club & the Greater Venice Florida Dog Club offer exhibitors four days of sun and fun starting Thursday in Arcadia FL (about 100 miles SW of Orlando).   Great Lakes residents have their pick of a weekend in Aliquippa PA with the Fort Steuben Kennel Association & the Beaver County Kennel Club, in Wauseon OH with the Fulton County Ohio Kennel Club, or in Morris IL with the Stone City Kennel Club or try the Wright County Minnesota Kennel Club’s two shows in Hutchinson MN.

In the South Central US, your options are weekends in Bentonville AR with the Northwest Arkansas Kennel Club or in Humble TX (just north of Houston)with the Greater Humble Area Kennel Club or four days starting tomorrow with the Mesilla Valley Kennel Club & the Chaparral Kennel Club in Alamogordo NM (200 miles south of Albuquerque NM).  From there it’s 1200 miles to Roseville CA and this weekend’s Donner Trail Kennel Club’s two shows.  (Pack a lunch and avoid hungry looking exhibitors)

We have another shot at paradise, with three shows on the Big Island of Hawaii  in Hilo hosted by the Orchid Island Dog Fanciers Club and the Kona Coast Kennel Club.  So, if you can get there, visit the Morris & Essex Kennel Club show on Thursday.  If not, try one of the other beautiful AKC dog shows.

GWPCA NATIONAL SPECIALTY

GCH CH Reece Afterhours The Buck Stops Here JH

Our friends in the German Wirehaired Pointer family were out in Kennewick WA this past week for the National Specialty of  the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America.  The Specialty was held on Friday, October 1st  preceding the Richland Kennel Club’s two all breed shows.  Richard Byrd’s BISS was GCH CH Reece Afterhours The Buck Stops Here JH.  Truman is the son of the AKC’s current Number Eight Dog All Breeds, GCH CH Ripsnorter’s Mt View Lookout.   Truman was piloted to the win by breeder/owner/handler Angie Johnson.  Congratulation to Angie, and her fellow breeders/owners Mike Johnson and Christine Whitmore.

Among the other winners were BOS, CH Aspendel Pale Rider JH, BW/WB, Claddagh's Hotcakes At Sangrud JH, and WD, Drakkar's RLB's Easy On The Eyes at Jay-Mar's.  Our congratulations to all the award winners.

A CAIRN TERRIER WINS BACK2BACK BIS!?

CH YellowBrickRoad Wring Of Fire

Back2back BIS for a Cairn Terrier is about likely as being swept away by a tornado to a land inhabited by Munchkins, but it did happen this weekend, not in the magical land of Oz, but in the magical land of Hawaii.  The Cairn Terrier, CH YellowBrickRoad Wring Of Fire, picked up the double in Honolulu, winning both of the Windward Hawaiian Dog Fanciers Association‘s two shows.
