Exhibitors at today’s Wine Country Kennel Club were greeted by one of those golden days they get in the Napa Valley and fanciers who stayed for W Everett Dean Jr‘s final were treated to one of those great moments we get in the dog world when a dog you have heard about all year shows up in your back yard.   Today it was the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, who is usually shown on the east coast showing up to take the BIS.  Joining Malachy were the Weimaraner, GCH CH Silhouettes LifeInTheFastlane, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Alaskan Malamute, GCH CH Catanya's Latin Lover, the Airedale, GCH CH Sherwood’s King Arthur, the Tibetan Terrier, GCH CH Players Just Like Butter, and the  Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber.  We will bring you the rest of the finalists just as soon as we confirm them.

KINGS & GRAND CHAMPIONS

Henry II schools Phillip II on Titles

We have made a practice to keep our soap box discreetly stowed for most of the history of this blog, but today in researching this week’s shows we came across a couple of interesting entries that cause us to ascend that platform.  At one show we noticed that all of the entries were from one owner, not really unusual in these times of 300 entry dog shows.  However this entry has Champion and Grand Champion dogs entered in the Open Class.  Well, call us naïve, but we never had heard of such a practice.  While we have been told that such is within the permitted, we’re pretty sure that it is contrary to the spirit of good sportsmanship.

Now, we have in the past entered two or three puppies in a show with our adult BBE entry to get some help from the judges in determining who the real “keeper” of the bunch was and though we have never “built” our own major, we have seen it done, though we have frequently witnessed such majors go to an unexpected single entry owner.   In this case we wonder what the owner intended.  Were they needing some help from the judges to tell them whether their GCH, their CH, or their true class dog was the better dog?  Or were they hoping their class dog would take the points over their CH and GCH?  Generally one is a little chagrined when a class dog beats one’s special.  Perhaps when it is one’s own dog, the sting of being told the GCH lost is less?

Such blatant purchasing of titles should be discouraged, for it demeans all of us.  What is then the value of the title?  We recall in the movie The Lion In Winter the aging King of England, Henry II, telling the boy King of France, Phillip II,  “A king? Because you put your ass on purple cushions? “  Where do the AKC and National Breed Clubs stand on this?

SEASONAL FEAST OF SHOWS

Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley

Once again we have a seasonal cornucopia of dog shows in the east and a meager helping of shows elsewhere in the US this week.  The fun begins today in Salisbury MD with the first of five shows.  Today’s offering by the Talbot Kennel Club will be followed  by the TKC’ day two show, two from the Salisbury Maryland Kennel Club, and the Sunday closer from the Mispillion Kennel Club.

New Englanders will start their four day weekend tomorrow in Fitchburg MA with the Cheshire Kennel Club show, followed by Friday & Sunday with the Souhegan Kennel Club, and Saturday with the Framingham District Kennel Club.  In Winston-Salem NC the Furniture City Kennel Club will offer up a traditional weekend as will the Hernando County Kennel Club in Brooksville FL, a hour north of Tampa.

Here in the Midsouth, we have four shows in Priceville AL beginning Thursday, courtesy of the Decatur Alabama Kennel Club & the Huntsville Kennel Club.   Look for us at the Saturday HKC show, our first outing in a while.    Up in the Great Lakes region the Greater Muskegon Kennel Club, the Kalamazoo Kennel Club, & the Grand Rapids Kennel Club will each do one in Grand Rapids MI starting Friday.

You can get the standard Saturday/Sunday fare in Springfield MO with the Ozarks kennel Club, in Houston TX with the Cypress Creek Kennel Club Of Texas, or in Pueblo CO with the Southern Colorado Kennel Club.  Finally if you want to have an absolutely glorious dog show weekend visit Napa CA for two days with the Wine Country Kennel Club and take the time to take the cable car up to the Sterling Vineyards for the tour.  We promise you it’s the most beautiful view in the Napa Valley.

FOUR IN A ROW FOR NUMBER TWO

GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy

We don’t see four BIS in a row very often, but this weekend the Number Two Dog All Breeds, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, is doing everything he can do to catch the front runner.  He and owner/handler David Fitzpatrick picked up four all breed Bests in two states this weekend, the latest coming at today’s Back Mountain Kennel Club show in Bloomsburg PA.  Joining Malachy and David in Sandra Goose Allen’s final were the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed, the Borzoi, GCH CH Greyhaven Wizard's Crystal, the Rottweiler, GCH CH D'Oro Solido Uno, the American Staffordshire Terrier, CH Castle Rock's SBigStaff Mad About You, the Bulldog, GCH CH Kepley’s Showbiz Razzle Dazzle, and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.   We can tell you that Malachy’s 51st BIS will not be enough to take over the Number One spot, but he is very, very close.

KNOXVILLE TN FINAL DAY

GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction

Day four in Knoxville TN looked a whole lot like day three with the Oakridge Kennel Club hosting again and the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, winning the back2back BIS.  Joining Beackham in Karen Wilson’s final were the Bloodhound, CH Heathers Father And Son, the Giant Schnauzer, GCH CH Skansen’s Sir August Brigs, the American Staffordhshire Terrier, GCH CH Alpine‘s Highwayman, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, GCH CH Mondrian VH Lamslag RE, the Schipperke, GCH CH Dante Fire When Ready, and the Puli, GCH CH Cordmaker’s Rumpus Bumpus.  Beckham’s 20th BIS might be good enough to move him up a slot in the All Breed Rankings, but we will reserve that until we get the rest of today’s numbers in.
