ELIZABETH TAYLOR, DOG LOVER

 Elizabeth Taylor with her Pekingese

One of my favorite themes is that the love of dogs crosses all social barriers.  I first realized that when as a 23 year old kid I got the chance to meet Elizabeth Taylor.   I was working for the Immigration Service processing passengers arriving at JFK in New York.  Because I had been green enough to purchase a full dress uniform when I was hired, I often got to escort VIPs through federal formalities.

Miss Taylor arrived accompanied by the most famous of her seven husbands, Richard Burton.  (For you youngsters out there, think Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie…and then multiply by ten.)  Mr Burton was obviously tired and irritable after 15 hours traveling, but Ms Taylor was gracious & radiant, easily one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen.  At that age I was easily reduced to a stammer when around famous people, especially beautiful women. However, Miss Taylor was also in the company of a Pekingese over which she was fussing.  I timidly offered that I owned and showed Maltese and she immediately engaged me  in a fifteen minute long chat ranging fromt how she had to have a dog in her life to the difficulty of housebreaking that particular Peke.  Suddenly the most beautiful woman in the world became one of us, a dog owner, totally dedicated to her pet.

Later she would have more than one Maltese in her home.  I like to think I had something to do with that.  In any event, it is one of my favorite dog stories.  I just wish I had a happier occasion on which to share it.  Rest In Peace, Miss Taylor.

PACIFIC SMORGASBORD OF SHOWS

Aircraft Carriers in Bremerton WA
These past few weeks there have been a dearth of shows on the West Coast.  This coming weekend, fanciers near the Pacific will have their choice of four different venues.  In Central California, the Kern County Kennel Club will hold two shows in  Bakersfield.  If you have the time and stamina head to the Bay Area where there are four shows beginning Thursday in Vallejo CA courtesy of the Santa Cruz Kennel Club, Kennel Club Of Salinas, San Mateo Kennel Club, & Oakland Kennel Club.   Up in the Pacific Northwest the Peninsula Dog Fanciers Club will do two in Bremerton WA.   There’s even a deuce in Anchorage AK thanks to Tanana Valley Kennel Club & Alaska Kennel Club.

The East Coast will have it’s usual full contingent of shows with a big weekend in New Brunswick NJ beginning Thursday .  They’ll start with three limited breed shows (the Progressive Dog Club, the Non-Sporting Group Club Of The Garden State, & the Herding Group Association Of New Jersey) and follow with three all breed shows from the New Brunswick Kennel Club & the Bronx County Kennel Club (Anybody remember shows in the old Bronx Armory?)  There are five all breed shows this week in Raleigh NC hosted by the Cary Kennel Club, the Alamance Kennel Club, the Durham Kennel Club the Raleigh Kennel Club, & the Fayetteville Kennel Club.  It all starts tomorrow.

If you don’t leave near the Atlantic or Pacific your choices are limited to two in Dubuque IA with the hometown Dubuque Kennel Club or two in Fort Worth TX with the hometown  Fort Worth Kennel Club.  We can tell you any of these shows will have some of the most beautiful canines in the world.  Visit an AKC dog show this weekend.

DEL SUR KENNEL CLUB DAY TWO

GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore

Is it the huge full moon that has caused it?  We’re talking about Standard Poodle Sunday.  Three of the six all breed shows today have been won by a Standard Poodle.  Before you go thinking we’re fomenting a conspiracy theory here, let’s just state the obvious.  We have a bunch of really beautiful Standard Poodles out right now.  Today’s third winner actually was the first Poodle to win a BIS this weekend.

GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore made it BACK2BACK wins taking both offerings of the Del Sur Kennel Club.  Also vying for Betty Ann Stenmark’s attention today in Valley Center CA were The Golden Retriever, GCH CH Gaia of Yoshida Enterprise, the Boxer, GCH CH R And G’s Mystical Dancer, the Norfolk Terrier, GCH CH Maxwell‘s Rainbow, the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Tamarin’s Top Banana, and a Rough Collie, to be named later.

That’s seven for Ally and handler Tim Brazier.  We can’t wait to see what happens at the Poodle Club of America National Specialty next month.

KANSAS CITY CLOSER

GCH CH Dacun Kaylens He's A Heartbreaker

There was also a four day set in Kansas City MO this week.  You can read about the first three days here.  Today it was DOG2WATCH, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Dacun Kaylens He's A Heartbreaker, taking home the BIS.  Joining Thomas and owner/handler Kay Peiser in Dorothy Collier’s final were the German Wirehaired Pointer, CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm, the Greyhound, GCH CH GrandCru Erasmus,  the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall I Dream of Style, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Waybroke Broxden Turning Tanner, the Papillon, CH Copella’s Rising Attraction, and the Rough Collie, CH Sylvan Argent It‘s All About Me.  Thomas and Kay now have five BIS this year.

LAST OF LOUISVILLE

GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction

The hometown Louisville Kennel Club closed the final day of 2011’s biggest dog show week with some now familiar faces before BIS judge Richard William Powell, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the Whippet, GCH CH Sporting field’s Bahama Sands, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Wire Fox Terrier, CH Jadee-Connacht Just You Wait, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Bandheim’s Captain Crunch.

Taking home the last big rosette of the week was the Standard Poodle, London.  We were lucky enough to see this beauty up close yesterday…truly stunning.  London and handler Ann Rarigh have put together an incredible string of wins, seven BIS in just five weeks, all major venues with big points.

We predicted that this week would be a game changer.  The fact that no dog won more than one of the big prizes still keeps things interesting.  We are still compiling numbers, but let’s just say if you were in Louisville, you probably moved up in the rankings.
