AS CLOSE AS IT GETS

Well, we know we will create a ruckus with this one, but it was just too good to keep it to ourselves.  If you look at our update of the TRADTIONAL TOP TEN DOGS ALL BREEDS you will note that we have several of the positions tied.  When we compiled the numbers this week we were astonished to find four of the placements so close that we had to declare them ties.  Our numbers, some of which are estimates, have these dogs separated by margins as narrow as six points.  If you look at the chart below you will see how close this year’s race really is.

CLICK ON CHART TO ENLARGE

Remember we provide these up to date rankings as entertainment.  They have no official status, but we will remind you that we have error rate of less than 0.5% these past three years.

WHY YOU HAVE FREE TIME

We Americans love our long weekends.  Well, we hope your up for a week of dog show gluttony.  This coming week takes advantage of the holiday weekend to pack in the most shows in one seven day period so far this year.  We have 50, yes, we said 50, all breed shows scheduled around the Memorial Day weekend.  Only one of the 13 sites hosting will offer just two shows.  Two have three day events, eight are four day stops, and two are five day marathons.

If you have the stamina for five full days of doggy fun, you have your choice of the joint effort of the Kennel Club Of Northern New Jersey, the Staten Island Kennel Club, the Monmouth County Kennel Club, the Plainfield Kennel Club, and the Union County Kennel Club in Freehold NJ or the multiple offerings of the Laurel Highlands Kennel Association, New Castle Kennel Club, & the Trumbull County Kennel Club in New Castle PA.  Both sets will begin on Thursday and run through Monday.

If you can only get one extra day off, there are four day stays in Hampton VA courtesy of the Langley Kennel Club & the Gloucester Kennel Club Of Virginia, in Hamilton OH with the Warren County Kennel Club Of Ohio & the Cincinnati Kennel Club, in Kalamazoo MI from the Holland Michigan Kennel Club, the Grand Rapids Kennel Club, the Kalamazoo Kennel Club, & the Greater Muskegon Kennel Club, or in Bloomington IL presented by the Illinois Valley Kennel Club Of Peoria & the Corn Belt Kennel Club.

Wait!  We have more four day suggestions.  Continuing west, there are four day weekends in Tulsa OK with the Seminole Kennel Club & the Mid-Continent Kennel Club Of Tulsa, and in Wyoming, although exhibitors will have to start on Friday in Casper WY with the Central Wyoming Kennel Club and then pack up and move to Laramie WY for their Sunday/Monday shows. It will be the same drill in the Pacific North West where fanciers will do Saturday & Sunday in Spokane WA with the Spokane Kennel Club & then Monday & Tuesday in Coeur D'alene ID with the Coeur D'Alene Dog Fanciers.  However, the four shows of the San Fernando Kennel Club, the San Gabriel Valley Kennel Club, the Los Encinos Kennel Club, & the Antelope Valley Kennel Club, will all take place in Pomona CA.

Three day weekends are on the schedule in the Northern California town of Placerville with the Hangtown Kennel Club Of Placerville CA & the Kennel Club Of The California Sierra and in Fairbanks AK where the Tanana Valley Kennel Club will do all shows.  The lone two day show can be found in St Peter MN (Key City Kennel Club).   Wherever you spend you free time this week, take a moment to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives so you could have that FREE time.

Tanner would be the only of Saturday’s finalists to make it back to the BIS ring on Sunday to plead his case with Mary Anne Brocious.  Also asking for consideration were the Gordon Setter, GCH CH Sastya’s Eleven Eleven, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, GCH CH Soletrader Bjorn Borg, the Bullmastiff, GCH CH Newcastle’s Picturesque Picasso, a Papillon from Open Dog class,  S&L’s Diesel, the Shiba Inu, GCH CH Fanfair's Without A Trace At Glenchester, and the Shetland Sheepdog, GCH CH Jusdandy Deine Mz M.

GREATER KINGSPORT KC DAY TWO

GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction

In addition to the four shows we had in western Tennessee in Jackson, the Greater Kingsport Kennel Club hosted two shows in the town of Gray in the eastern part of the state.  AKC’s Number One Dog All Breeds, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, picked up yet another set of bookends winning both of the GKKC’s two offerings.  Read about day one here.  Today it was Jane Roppolo who chose Beckham from a seven that included the 13” Beagle, GCH CH Skyline’s Dream Big, the Boxer from the 12-18 month bitch class, Fourbears‘ Scarlett Robe for Linmar, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, GCH CH Redclay Dreamboat Lieutenant Disher, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, GCH CH Stepamgar King of Memphis, from the 9-12 month puppy dog class, Byrum’s a Kiss is Just a Kiss, and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Dalarno Nite Song at Morningstar

While it is true we have great AKC dogs out every year, each year we usually have different breeds in our Top Ten.  We haven’t had a Cocker Spaniel in the Top Ten since 2004 when the Parti-Color, CH San Jo's Born To Win, finished the year as the Number Five Dog All Breeds.   We will let the breed historians tell us if a Cocker has ever been Number One.  The point is, get out there and see this one.

MATTAPONI KENNEL CLUB

Our next stop is Manassas VA where we have results from both of the Mattaponi Kennel Club’s two shows.  Yesterday Lawrence Stanbridge chose his BIS from the English Setter, GCH CH Wyndswept Encore, the Whippet, GCH CH Sporting Field‘s Bahama Sands, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Australian Terrier, GCH CH Kamabara’s Zebulon, the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, the Tibetan Spaniel, GCH CH Tibroke’s Kissed By A Star, and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Deerfield Enchanted Kingdom.

It was the sleek Whippet, Tawny, picking up another BIS, her ninth BIS this year and her 35th Hound Group.  We encourage you to stop by the Whippet ring at your local show.  We have seen quality dogs everywhere we go and if you are lucky enough to run across Tawny, you will see what we mean.

GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari

On Sunday Roger Hartinger had Saturday finalists, the Whippet, Tawny, the Boxer, Scarlett, the Affenpinscher, Joey, & the above named Corgi, along with the Brittany, GCH CH Carrollton’s Count Lancelot, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH Lomondview Clementina, and the Lhasa Apso, GCH CH Ta Sen Bond James Bond.

His BIS was Joey, the Affenpinscher from the Netherlands.   Joey impressed a lot of people when he arrived in the US last year in mid season, but this year he has caught fire and is now the Number Five Dog All Breeds with eight BIS & 31 Toy Group Firsts

LONG ISLAND KENNEL CLUB

GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins

Meanwhile back on the east coast, where hockey is a favorite sport, the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins, has pulled off the hat trick, equally rare in dogs as on ice, three BIS in a row.  Today’s win came at the Long Island Kennel Club show in Bethpage NY.  Dr John Reese-Newson picked Roy out of line up that included the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, GCH CH Lennoxlove Susqudilla’s Mini Cooper, a Norwegian Elkhound from the Bred By Exhibitor class, Ellyka’s Gray Expectations, the Samoyed, GCH CH McMagic Candie Ham of Pebbles’Run, the Welsh Terrier, Sarendon It Had To Be You, the Pug, GCH CH San Remo’s Tug of War, and the Tibetan Terrier, GCH CH Salishan’s My Special Angel.

The win brings Roy’s career total to 60 all breed BIS.  Maybe they should rename him Mickey Mantle.

SUNFLOWER KC OF OLATHE KS DAY ONE

GCH CH PaRay's Power & Privilege

The Sunflower Kennel Club Of Olathe, Kansas held their Saturday show in Gardner KS.  (We know it’s confusing, but they do put on a nice show)  BIS judge Sulie Greendale-Paveza had the difficulty of choosing among the Irish Setter, GCH CH Antares Amelia Earhart, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline's Chanel, the Standard Schnauzer, GCH CH Sketchbook Smarty Jones, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH McVan's Be Bop Baby, the Brussels Griffons, CH Endor and Donandru's New Moon, the  Bichon Frise,  GCH CH PaRay's Power & Privilege, and the Shetland Sheepdog, GCH CH Kylene Eden The Dragonslayer.

Her Best In Show was the Bichon, Dominick.  It’s the second big rosette this year for California resident, Dominick.  We hope this handsome guy gets out more so more of you can see him.

COYOTE HILLS KC DAY ONE

CH Blossomhill’s Hello Dolly

Also from the west coast, Vallejo CA on the San Francisco Bay was the site for Saturda’s Coyote Hills Kennel Club show.  William Cunningham had a mixture of fresh faces and experienced finalists in his seven, the Irish Water Spaniel, CH Stanegate Slippery When Wet, the Basset Hound, CH Blossomhill’s Hello Dolly, the Alaskan Malamute, GCH CH Catanya’s Latin Lover, the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH Random Ruse, the Pomeranian, GCH CH CR Simply Irresistible, the French Bulldog, GCH CH Lefox Born to Boogie, and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Mariel’s Harvest Moon.

MT BAKER KENNEL CLUB DAY ONE

GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore

From the Mt Baker Kennel Club we hear that their Saturday show in Lynden WA went to the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore.   Denise Dean might have chosen the Irish Setter, CH Mi Jean's Reason To Believe, the Afghan Hound, GCH Stormhill's Sweet Dreams of Raffica, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Caryola's Antigua, the American Staffordshire Terrier, GCH CH Alpine's Highwayman, the Brussels Griffon, Jimijo’s Bare With Me, and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Sandfox Winter Sonata, but she didn’t.

Ally, the Number Three Dog All Breeds, now has 17 BIS to her credit this year.

GREATER CLARKSBURG WV KC DAY TWO

By taking on our first four day cluster in a while we had hoped to test our stamina and maybe pick up some points on our Cairn bitch.  We are happy to report that we did all right on the former, though we did cheat a little by packing up after our morning judging.  While we did leave before today’s final in Jackson TN we do have lots of results for you from yesterday & today.

GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy

First, from Marietta OH, we hear that Saturday’s second iteration of the Greater Clarksburg WV Kennel Club ended with Michele Billings choosing the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, as her Best In Show.  Malachy and owner/handler David Fitzpatrick were accompanied by the winner of both Thursday’s & Friday’s shows, the Golden Retriever, GCHC CH Summits Emery It’s In The Bag, the Pharaoh Hound, GCH CH Northgate’s aS You Like It, the Samoyed, GCH CH Stolichnaya, the Norfolk Terrier, GCH CH Cracknor’s Cross the Ts, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Hillwood Ale Kai Walking On Air, and the Briard Bigtree-Act All About Love.

Malachy, the Number Two Dog All Breeds, is a step ahead of the rest of the field, with 13 BIS & 35 Toy Group wins.

GCH CH Cracknor’s Cross the Ts

Sunday the Blennerhassett Kennel Club took over and asked Charlotte McGowan to judge their day two BIS.  While we are still trying to find out who the herding Group finalists was, we can tell you that five of Saturday’s finalists did come back for a second crack at Best In Show, with the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Vogel flight’s “Honor” to Pillowtalk making her first appearance of the weekend.  Best was the country’s Number One Norfolk Terrier, Plum, who picked up her third BIS of the year.
