His choices were the Shar-Pei, Tinsel, who took the BIS and the Russell, Bosse, who took the Reserve.  It’s the first of the year for Tinsel, who finished last year with five BIS and 19 Group Ones.  Congratulations to breeder/owner Rebecca Pentecost DVM, owners Deborah & Robert Cooper, & Linda Teitelbaum, and handler Nina Fetter.

INDIANAPOLIS DAYS ONE & TWO

GCH CH Claircreek Impression De Matisse

Many of the Westminster entries will not partake of the weekend warm ups in the New York metro area, but will instead avail themselves of the Indy Winter Classic, four all breed shows in Indianapolis offered up by the Central Indiana Kennel Club and the Hoosier Kennel Club.  One dog is making the most of the opportunity, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Claircreek Impression De Matisse.  Matisse and handler Michael Scott have picked up both Thursday’s CIKC and today’s HKC BIS.

The six who joined them in Houston Clark’s final on Thursday were the Pointer, GCH CH Oncore Mykyna Storm, the Saluki, GCH CH Sandstorm Blue Nile Bubbles of Jatara, the Russell Terrier, GCH CH Goldsands Columbus, the Chinese Crested, GCH CH Hampton Court’s Charlie at Legend, the RBIS, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Karizma’s Ike of Edale.

Today, Barbara Dempsey Alderman chose Matisse over the same the American Water Spaniel, GCH CH  Waterway Game CRK Hot Diggity JH, the Basset Hound, GCH CH Topsfield-Sanchu Eenie Meenie Miney Moe, her Reserve, the above named Russell Terrier, the Maltese, GCH CH Scylla’s Small Kraft Re-Lit, the Schipperke, GCH CH Dante’s Fire When Ready HOF, and the aforementioned  GSD.

The wins bring to three the number of BIS this year for Matisse.  Suddenly the Working Group is looking very interesting.

PROGRESSIVE DOG CLCUB

GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare

One of the most anticipated Westminster warm ups each year is the Progressive Dog Club show, an all Toy Dog limited breed show conveniently staged in the Hotel Pennsylvania across the street from Madison Square Garden.  While many consider the show a harbinger of things to come, we remind all that this is Westminster.  Anything might happen.

Today Charlotte Patterson had her work cut out for her with virtually every breed representative an all breed BIS winner.  However, at the end of the day, she went with 2012’s Number Two Toy Dog, the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, as her Group One/BIS.  Rounding out her placements were the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, the Papillon, GCH CH Involvo The King of Pop, and the Pug, GCH CH Hill Country Tag I’m It.

The Affenpinscher, Joey, had finished 2012 as the Number One Toy Dog with a flourish,  winning the Toy Group at the AKC/Eukanuba Championship.  However, since then he has been at home awaiting this coming week’s big dance.  In the meantime the MinPin, Classie, has been all over, collecting six BIS and 14 Toy Groups this year. Today’s outcome is sure to heighten speculation about Monday’s Toy Group.

WWW: THE HERDING GROUP

GCH CH Coventry Allure at Wyndstar

The 2012 Herding Group winner, the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Babheim’s Captain Crunch, will not repeat this year as his owner/handler, Jimmy Moses, will be judging the breed this year.  As Capi was also 2012’s Number One Herding Dog, the field is now wide open.  We look to two Corgis to fill the void, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Coventry Allure at Wyndstar, and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Aubrey’s Tails of Mystery.  The Pembroke, Allie, finished 2012 with six BIS and 45 Herding Groups.  She has one RBIS and seven Group Ones so far this year.  The Cardigan, Libby, was 2012’s Number Two Herding Dog, finishing last year with eight BIS and 57 Group Ones.  She has been busy this year as well with two BIS, one RBIS, and eight Toy Groups.

The Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Rocheuses Me and My Shadow of Cornus, was 2012’s Number Three Herding Dog, with 11 BIS and 39 Herding Groups, the last one at the 2012 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.

One of the largest entries this year will be in Australian Shepherds, with 43.  2012’s Number One Australian Shepherd and Number Nine Herding Dog was GCH CH Harmony Hills Money Talks with eight BIS and 28 Herding Groups.  Cash started 2013 with a BIS in Texas and has added four more Group Ones.

Given the capricious nature of the dog game in general and the weather this year, we can’t be sure that all these dogs will even make it to New York.  So don’t bet the lunch money on the outcome.  In any event be sure to tune in and enjoy the show.
