BACK2BACK BIS IN TUCSON

CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek

We just heard that the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek, has posted back to back BIS, winning the day two show of the Tucson (AZ) Kennel Club. He’s got our attention.

SUMMER IN WASHINGTON STATE

We have this in from today’s Whidbey Island Kennel Club show in Monroe WA.

CH Brighton Lakeridge Summer In The Hamptons

Suzanne Dillon’s final seven were the Irish Setter, CH Ashton Peaceful Easy Feeling, the Afghan Hound, CH Polo’s The Aviator, the Tibetan Mastiff, Shang-Hai's King Of Eden, the Scottish Terrier, CH McVan’s Trip The Light Fantastic, the Papillion, CH Queen Bless Jp World Idol, the Standard Poodle, CH Brighton Lakeridge Summer In The Hamptons, and the Belgian Tevuren, CH Sky Acres Spy Plane.

It may be almost Thanksgiving, but it was still summer in Washington State as the Standard Poodle, Summer, added another BIS to her resume, her seventh and her second this month.

THREE 4 THREE

It’s day three in Roseburg OR and it’s day one for the Rogue Valley Kennel Club (and, no, Sara Palin has not got into dogs).

CH Perrisblu Paris

Paula Hartinger’s final included the Britanny, CH RJ’s Sierra Edition, Thursday’s BIS winner, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, CH Soletrader Donald Duck, the Akita, CH Mojo’s Rock’n Your World, the Kerry Blue Terrier, CH Perris Blu Paris, Yesterday’s BIS winner, the Shih Tzu, Amitzu’s China Doll, the French Bulldog, CH Highwood’s Big Shot, the Bouvier des Flandres, CH Avalon ‘s Frontier Sleepnlady Webber.

BIS went to the country’s number one Kerry Blue, Paris. That’s her third BIS this year. Did you notice that the McFaddens have gone three for three in Roseburg with three different dogs? That’s what talent and years of experience will do for you.

NORTH CAROLINA BIS

In Concord NC it was Houston Clark doing Best In Show on day two of the Greater Monroe Kennel Club.

CH Kridler's Nutmeg V Signature

His seven were the English setter, CH Honeygait Wilsolake On The Rocks, the Whippet, CH Ableaim Just Not Anthr Pretty Face, the Boxer, CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Wire Fox Terrier, CH Cheviot’s Aston Martin, the Pug, CH Riversong’s Broadway Joe, the Bichon Frise, CH Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Kridler's Nutmeg V Signature.

BIS went to the two year old GSD, Meg. Another dog new to us, we think this might be her first BIS as well. Congratulations to breeders Joe & Leslie Beccia & Tari Kridler and owners Rebecca Tsaro Dickson & James & Sheree Moses. We suspect we will see more of this girl soon.

NEW BIS WINNER

While all the east coast is suffering from a nasty nor’easter, the folks in Ocala FL were enjoying perpetual Indian Summer.

CH Mondrian VH Lamslag RE

Sally Ray Baugniet’s final at today’s Greater Ocala Dog Club show included Thursday’s BIS winner, the Black Cokcer Spaniel, CH Bracon’s Leapin Lily Pads, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Ch Rokeena Carte Blanche, the Boxer, Winfall I Dream Of Style, the Norwich Terrier, CH Maystar’s Coast To Coast, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, CH Mondrian VH Lamslag RE, the Standard Poodle, CH Chrystal's Totally Chromed Out , and yesterday’s BIS winner, the German Shpherd Dog, CH Shoal Creek’s Sangria V Barick.

It was yet another Terrier BIS with the Norwich getting the nod. This two year old just showed up on our radar two weeks ago. We do think that this is his first AKC BIS ever. We hope to have more information, and a photo, for you soon. Congratulations to breeders Sandy Hamilton & Frank Bossong DVM, owners David & Sheryl Vogt, and handler Larry Cornelius.

SYRACUSE NY & LINCOLN NE

CH Sporting Field’s Bahama Sands

We have two BIS to tell you about. First from Syracuse NY and the Chenango Valley Kennel Club, we hear that Roberta Davies has selected the Whippet, CH Sporting Field’s Bahama Sands, as her BIS today.

CH Norkus Risky Business

In the heartland, Lincoln NE to be exact, Robert Sharp has tagged the Pug, CH Norkus Risky Business, as today’s Best In Show on day one of the Council Bluffs Kennel Club. Congratulations to them both.

SADIE GET 100 BIS, AGAIN

It was a great show and it will be a dramatic Thanksgiving Day event. The US’ number one dog attains a major AKC distinction, 100 all breed BIS, in a venue that will be seen by 20 million television viewers. What? You thought the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, hit that mark yesterday? Here’s the background story.

CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot

Yesterday’s total included the 2009 Montgomery County Kennel Club BIS title. Well, although MCKC is an all breed club and awards an all breed rosette at it’s show, we all know it is a limited breed (all Terrier) show. So look for the announcers on Thanksgiving Day to tell you that it was Sadie’s 100th all breed BIS. Anyway you look at it, she has 100 all breed Best In Show awards and that puts her in the most exclusive company in AKC.

And is always the case in this show, everyone of the finalists was an outstanding, crowd pleasing representative of his/her breed. Also visiting Mrs Robet D (Polly) Smith’s BIS ring were the Labrador Retriever, CH Casbar’s Harrt To Hart, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, CH Celestial CJ’s Hearts On Fire, the Doberman Pinscher, CH Allure Blazing Star Alisaton, the Miniature Pinscher, CH Kimro’s Soldier Boy, the Bulldog, CH Kepley’s Showbiz Razzle Dazzle, and the Bearded Collie, CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.

So on Thanksgiving Day, between the Macy’s Parade and your Aunt Tilly’s pumpkin pie, do participate in a bit of dog show tradition and history. Watch the National Dog Show, brought to you by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and Purina.

ANOTHER REDHEAD BIS

It was day two for the Canadian Valley Kennel Club in Chickasha OK and it was Kent Delaney’s turn to decide Best In Show.

CH Vineyard’s Bad Boy

His options were the Irish Setter, CH Vineyard’s Bad Boy, the Norwegian Elkhound, CH Vin-Melca’s Master Card, the Boxer, CH Bravo N Sunset's Stealing Time, the Skye Terrier, CH Solana Avante Garde, the Shi Tzu, CH Symrun’s Look N Good, the Standard Poodle, CH Donnchada Sweet Dreams, and the Rough Collie, CH Gentry’s Braveheart.

His BIS was the Irish Setter, Bad Boy. This raging redhead has been taking no prisoners in the last few weeks and is now the number six Sporting Dog.

ANOTHER TERRIER BIS

The North Carolina coast is getting buffeted by gale force winds today, but it’s dry and comfortable in the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord NC.

CH Hi-Kel Terrydale Soldier Of Fortune

That’s where the Greater Monroe Kennel Club and Edd Bivin set up shop. His BIS group were the Labrador Retriever, CH Salty Dog Of Tampa Bay, the Bloodhound, CH Flessner’s International Harvester, the Doberman Pinscher, CH Phillmar Sobe Monster, the Lakeland Terrier, CH Hi-Kel Terrydale Soldier Of Fortune, the Chinese Crested, CH Risin Star You Don’t Know Jack, the Bulldog, Ch Kepley’s First Impression, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Kridler's Nutmeg V Signature.

BIS went to one of our favorite redheads, the Lakeland, Ranger. Ranger is snapping at the heels of the top ten and holding on to the third best Terrier spot. Did you notice that’s the fourth Terrier to go BIS today?

SMOOTH FOX IN TUCSON

CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek

The Tucson Kennel Club opened a four day set in their hometown today with Jane Forsyth calling the Best In Show. Her pick was the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek. This was Adam’s third all breed BIS this year. Adam just started his specials career. 2010 is gonna be a hell of a year for Smooth Fox.

The remaining finalists include the Golden Retriever, CH Toasty’s Treasure Island, the Afghan hound, CH Thaon’s Mowgli, the Boxer, CH Duba Dae’s Who’s Your Daddy, the Blenheim & Prince Charles English Toy Spaniel, CH Loujon Backroads To Paris, the Bichon Frise, CH PaRay Rime Time, and the Old English Sheepdog, CH Bugaboo’s Georgie Girl.

DAY TWO IN ROSEBURG OR

It’s day two for the Umpqua Kennel Club in Roseburg OR and Chuck Murray had BIS duty.

CH Amitzu China Doll

Her/His lineup included the Welsh Springer Spaniel, CH Royailes Hast B A Cut Above, yesterday’s BIS winner, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, CH Soletrader Donald Duck, the Tibetan Mastiff, CH Seng Khri Bartok Of Dawa, the Miniature Bull Terrier, CH Nederes’ Adventures With Stich, the Shih Tzu, CH Amitzu, China Doll, the French Bulldog, CH Highwood’s Big Shot, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Todorhaus Stetson.

BIS went to the Shih Tzu, China Doll, her second. After a year of seeing Taffe McFadden with a Giant Schnauzer, this is a bit of a departure, but one we could get use to.

DANDIE DAY AT DAYTON KC

The Dayton Kennel Club hosted today’s show in Columbus OH and asked Linda Robey to give us her opinion of the final seven.

CH King's Mtn. Minnie Mouse

They were the German Wirehaired Pointer, CH Ripsnorter Mt View Lookout, the Greyhound, CH Gaia Elfin Dance, the Siberian Husky, CH Kontoki’s A Bend In The Road, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, CH King’s Mtn. Minnie Mouse, the Papillion, CH Arkeno’s Ear’s To You, the Standard Poodle, CH Hillwood Dassin De-Lovely, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Kaleef Caterina V Kenlyn.

BIS went to the Dandie, Minnie. It’s the second BIS this year for Minnie, who was the top Dandie in 2008. Minnie is the daughter of CH Hobergays Fineus Fogg, 2006 number one dog all breeds. Congratulations to breeders Sandra Pretari, Ryan Horva, & Betty-Anne & Roy Stenmark and owners Don Watkins, Mark Smith & Sandra Pretari.

IT'S 100 BIS FOR SADIE!

It’s the nature of Terriers to defy the odds. So we are not surprised that the Scottish Terrier, CH Mercedes Of Maryscot chose a Friday the 13th to collect her 100th career Best In Show. The rarely attained milestone came today at the Greater Philadelphia Dog Fanciers Association’s show under the appreciative eye of Lee Canalizo.

CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot
with handler Gabriel Rangel
(Photo by Nancy Spelke, Custom Dog Designs)

Sadie and handler Gabriel Rangel have dominated the season like few dogs previously. They currently lead the field by an astonishing 55,000 points. If you have not seen this dog in person, get in your car and find her. We promise you it will be worth the trip. A Big Bravo goes out to Gabriel, breeders Mary O'Neal & Anstamm Kennel, and owner Amelia Musser.

On hand in Mrs. Canalizo’s final to see the historic win were the English Cocker Spaniel, CH Brasswinds Remember When, the Wirehaired Dachshund, CH Gleaneagle's Who’s Famous Now, the Samoyed, CH Selene Of Inn Wang San KR, the Toy Poodle, CH Smash Jp Moon Walk, the French Bulldog, CH Petite Cherie Femme De Puissance, and the Bearded Collie, CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.

This four day long celebration of dogdom continues tomorrow with the Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s annual National Dog Sow Presented by Purina which will be telecast on Thanksgiving Day.

GSD CLIMBING THE RANKINGS

Our first Friday results are in. They come to us from the Sunshine State where the Seminole Dog Fanciers Association held their day two show in Ocala FL.

CH Shoal Creek's Sangria V Barick

Janet Turnage Nahikian greeted the German Shorthaired Pointer, CH Fieldfines Back In Action JH, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, CH Rokeena Carte Blanche, the Rottweiler, CH Loral’s Number One Caesar, the Skye Terrier, CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, CH Mondrian V H Lamslag RE, the French Bulldog, CH A’Vigdors Caudataire Du Roi Tuurat’s El Che, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Shoal Creek’s Sangria V Barick.

It was the impressive GSD bitch, Rhea, taking home her 16th big rosette of the season. Two weeks ago, Rhea was still jockeying for position at the bottom of the top twenty. Now she is peeking at a top ten ranking.

LEATHERSTOCKING TAILS

We still have Thursday show reports coming in. With a nod to James Fenmore Cooper we have the opener of the Leather Stocking Cluster.

CH Cordmaker Field Of Dreams

Kimberly Meredith Cavanna was in the BIS ring for the Central New York Kennel Club. Her seven options were the Irish Setter, CH Shadagee Caught Red-Handed, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, CH Of Afrikka Spring Valley Dorian Gray, the Boxer, CH Raklyn`s The Bronx MVP At Third, the Irish Terrier, CH Fleet St Fenway Fan, the Brussels Griffon, CH Jo-Li`s I`m A Tease, the Chow Chow, CH Liontamer`s Dial 1-800-Hotstuff, and the Puli, CH Cordmaker Field Of Dreams.

It was the nation’s number three dog all breeds, the Puli, Conrad, collecting the weekend’s first top prize. We kind of like the image of Natty Bumpoo (look it up) on the trail in the Adirondacks with a Puli by his side. The fun continues today with the North Country Kennel Club show. Don’t you think “Chingachgook” would be a great name for a gun dog?

NEW BIS WINNER IN OREGON

Barbara Dempsey Alderman had an interesting Best In Show lineup today in Roseburg OR.

CH Soletrader Donald Duck

The Umpqua Kennel Club final seven were the English Springer Spaniel, CH Cerise Signature of Telltale RN CD, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, CH Soletrader Donald Duck, the Boxer, CH Capri’s Magic Maker Of Sassy, the Kerry Blue Terrier, CH Perrisblu Paris, the Shih Tzu, CH Amitzu China Doll, the American Eskimo Dog, CH Smoky Mtn Trader Pup, and the Bouvier des Flandres, CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber.

She rewarded us with a first time BIS winner, the PBGV, Donald. The four year old British import had a very successful career in England before coming to the US earlier this eyar. Congratulations to breeders Gavin & Sara Robertson & Paul Sparks, owners Don Gau & Gavan Robertson, and handler Bill McFadden.

COLUMBUS OHIO

Philadelphia may have all the media attention, but Columbus OH has the points. There were twice as many entries at today’s Sandusky Kennel Club event.

CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice

Competing for all those points were the Gordon Setter, CH Firethorn & Sandpiper Easy On The Eyes, the Pharoah Hound, CH Tiara Ne-Kabu Abu Simbel Ankh, the Siberian Husky, CH Topaz T.R.O.U.B.L.E., the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, the Papillion, CH Arkeno’s Ear’s To You, the Standard Poodle, CH Dassin Hillwood De-Lovely, and the Austrailian Shepherd, CH Mysharas Dream Girl.

It was the nation’s number two Terrier and number seven dog all breeds, the Smooth Fox, Dodger. Dodger had been on a roll lately. We think he will move up in the rankings after this weekend.

OCALA RESULTS

Not all the top twenty five are in Pennsylvania. Down in Ocala FL, there were plenty of names to impress and some newcomers to surprise.

CH Bracon’s Leapin Lily Pads

Gloria Geringer was on board to call the final ring for the Seminole Dog Fanciers Association. She chose her BIS from the Black Cocker Spaniel, CH Bracon’s Leapin Lily Pads, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, CH Rokeena Carte Blanche, a Portuguese Water Dog, Driftwood’s Red Right Return, the Norwich Terrier, CH Maystar’s Coast To Cost, the Pug, another class dog, CH Coral Bay’s Cash N Carry Harry, the Lhasa Apso, CH Tara Huff Edrey Starbuck, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Shoal Creek’s Sangria V Barick.

Here Best In Show was the Cocker. It was the first this year for the two year old bitch, bred and owned by Heather Sullivan and handled by Maureen Jewett. Congratulations to them both.

NUMBER 99!

Our busy week of shows is off and running. The most prestigious prize is Saturday’s Kennel Club of Philadelphia show and if today’s warm up in Oak PA is any indication we are in for multiple chills and thrills.

CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot

It was the Penn Treaty Kennel Club first out of the shute with Sari Brewster Tietjen calling Best In Show. The drama started early with both the Number one Working Dog, the Doberman Pinscher, CH Allure Blazing Star Alisaton, and the number one Non-Sporting Dog, the Bulldog, CH Kepley’s Showbiz Razzle Dazzle, failing to make it to the final seven. The seven who made it were the Labrador Retriever, CH Casbar’s Hart To Hart, the Saluki, CH XO EZ JC, the Bernese Mountain Dog, CH Blumoon Tazenite V Blackrock CD, the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, the Toy Poodle, CH Smash Jp Moon Walk, the Lhasa Apso, CH My Thai Ta Sen Halleluiah Chorus, and the Bearded Collie, CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.

With this incredibly high level of competition, no one could be certain that the country’s number one dog, the Scottie, Sadie, would walk away with the BIS win, but she did just that. That’s career all breed Best In Show number 99! She has three more chances this weekend to collect number 100. Stay tuned…when it happens, you will read it here first.

FALL HARVEST OF SHOWS

We have several outstanding shows this week. The two previously mentioned Kennel Club of Philadelphia shows on Saturday and Sunday are part of a four day cluster in the Suburb of Oak PA beginning Thursday. The Penn Treaty Kennel Club & Greater Philadelphia Dog Fanciers Association round out the quartet.

Ocala (FL) National Forest

Philadelphia is one of seven US sites hosting four day parties. Syracuse NY and Columbus OH will both hold four day events, the former hosted by the Central New York, North Country, Chenango Valley, & Del-otse-nango Kennel Clubs and the latter presented by the Sandusky, Dayton, Lima, & Central Ohio Kennel Clubs. In sunny Ocala FL, the Seminole Dog Fanciers Association & Greater Ocala Dog Club will give us four more shows.

Saguaro Cactus near Tucson AZ

The Canadian Valley & Town And Country Kennel Clubs will team up for four in Chickasha OK and the Tucson & Greater Sierra Vista Kennel Clubs will do the same in Tucson AZ. The remaining foursome is in Roseburg OR courtesy of the Umpqua & Rogue Valley Kennel Clubs. All the four day programs begin Thursday, excepting Tucson which runs Friday through Monday.

Snoqualmie River Valley & Cascade Mountains
Monroe WA

That’s 28 shows, but wait, there’s more. There’s a three day weekend, Friday-Sunday, available in Concord NC brought to you by the Greater Monroe &Fayetteville Kennel Clubs, as well as traditional Saturday/Sunday fare in Lincoln NE (Council Bluffs Kennel Club), Houston TX (Brazoria Kennel Club), Monroe WA (Whidbey Island Kennel Club) and Paso Robles CA (San Luis Obispo Kennel Club).

That’s 39 chances to see the fabulous pure bred dogs of the AKC. Even if you aren’t entered come out and cheer for your favorite. You won’t find better company or entertainment anywhere.

DON'T MISS THESE SHOWS

We have a couple of marquee shows coming up. First, this coming weekend is the Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s annual benched show. In recent years this show has become know as the National Dog Show (presented by Purina). The Saturday show is taped for television and has become a Thanksgiving Day staple akin to the Macy’s Parade, drawing 20 million viewers annually.

CH Rocky Top's Sundance Kid
KCP 2005 BIS Winner

However, to dog folks the Philadelphia show is a link to the way it use to be. The club has antecedents dating back to 1876 and is one of the AKC’s oldest clubs, becoming a member in 1913. The Great Depression interrupted the annual event, but the KCP has been a continuous annual event since 1933.

For long time fanciers Philadelphia harkens back to a time when the big benched events were convivial gatherings where friends caught up with one another, showcased the best of their kennels, and brought out new show prospects like a grand canine debutante ball.

CH Cookieland Seasyde Hollyberry
2008 BIS Winner National Championship

A much more recent tradition is the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship scheduled for December 12th & 13 in Long Beach CA. This show is a 21st century innovation and is rivaled only by the venerable Westminster Kennel Club in prestige. It has all the robust energy of this century, utilizing all the latest technology to stage a truly global event with entries from over 50 countries in both the traditional Best Of Breed classes and in a separate international competition.

The show is normally by invitation only, limited to BIS winners and the top 25 dogs of each breed. This year, in honor of the AKC’s 125th anniversary, the show will open for all normal competition. However, entries close tomorrow at 3:00 PM CST. You can enter on line at Onofrio.com. We won’t have a dog entered, but we will be on site to report all the action to you.

We were at this year’s Montgomery County Kennel Club and, as much fun as we had, we were disturbed by the lack of support shown by some of the breeds. We hope that the pettiness that has become all too prevalent among some in this game will not be apparent at the Philadelphia or Long Beach events. We encourage you all to get behind the top dogs in your breed and cheer them on at these events, and every event you attend. Remember every dog that catches the fancy of the public is an ambassador for us all. Many of us have breeds that are in danger of disappearing from the ring and from our world all together. Think about that the next time you bad mouth one of your competitors.

Best In Show went to the Bouvier. We don’t know anything about this girl (we are assuming that no one would be cruel enough to hang this name on a dog), and we don’t know which of the Johnsons bred/own/ or handled her, but we do know that any dog they take into the ring commands our attention and we offer them our hearty congratulations. We will post more info and a photo when we have it.
