CRUFTS DAY TWO

CH/IR CH Winuwuk Lust At First Sigh

Once again we treated our selves to the live on line streaming of group judging at Crufts, the giant British Kennel Club extravaganza.    Today’s offerings were the Working Group and the Pastoral Group (comparable to our Herding Group).

Three things caught our eye as the Working Group breed winners entered the big ring.  First, for a country steeped in tradition, exhibitors really get casual in their dress at Crufts.  At Westminster, handlers agonize over what they will wear in the Group judging.  Apparently, the British do not.  More on subject, is the culture shock of seeing floppy ears on the Boxer & the Doberman and the tail on the Bobtail (Old English), but we will leave that debate for another time.  We also were impressed that several of the dogs in the Working Group were substantially more substantial than what we see in the US.  We’re not saying American dogs are reedy.  We’re just saying that the English dogs were, well, beefy.

Mrs K Wilberg’s Group winner was the Boxer, CH/IR CH Winuwuk Lust At First Sight.  Her Reserve was the beautiful Newfoundland, CH/IR CH Fairweathers Knock Out with Brooklynbear.  Third was the Doberman Pinscher, CH Supera’s Ozzy Osbourne JW, and Fourth went to the Rottweiler, CH Olearia Blaze Of  Gold.  The Boxer, Max, is the winningest Boxer In the Kennel Club’s history and a repeat Crufts Working Group winner, having topped that Group in 2009.  Congratulations to breeders/owners Marion Ward-Davies, Julie Brown & Tim Hutchings.

CH Elmo Vom Hunhnegrab

Mr E Hulme’s Best of the Pastoral Group was the German Shepherd Dog, CH Elmo Vom Hunhnegrab.  His Reserve, Third, & Fourth were the Samoyed, CIB/EST/FIN/LT/LV/RUS CH Pilgrimage Snow Ball (yes, we know.  It’s their Kennel Club and they can do it any way they like), the Australian Shepherd, CH/DK/NO/VDH/INT CH Thornapple Aftershock, & the Norwegian Buhund, NUCH LUXCH NORDV-10 BEW-10 Kimura’s Jenseman.  Four year old Rico has been doing his share of winning since arriving in England from Germany, winning three BIS in ten shows entered.  Congratulations to breeder Heinz Scheerer, owner Mr J Cullen, and handler Stephen Cox.

NASHVILLE KENNEL CLUB DAY ONE

While the world’s biggest dog show is going on in Birmingham, England, an English bred dog, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden, was here in the US adding another BIS to his already impressive resume.  The latest win came today in Franklin TN at the day one show of the Nashville Kennel Club.  Joining Malachy and owner/handler David Fitzpatrick in Houston Clark’s final were the Golden Retriever, GCH CH My Buddys Boppity-Bop Blue Moon RN, the Basenji, CH Signet Meiterhaus Gossip Girl, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Norfok Terrier, GCH CH Cracknor Cross The T's, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the Australian Shepherd, GCH CH Myshara’s Dream Girl.  The win puts Malachy back in the Top Twenty Dogs All Breeds.  We look for Malachy to be back in the Top Ten soon.

CRUFTS BEGINS - GUN DOGS

Eng SH CH Vbos The Kentuckian

We tend to be egocentric here in the US, especially strange in the dog fancy considering most of our beloved breeds originated outside the US.  Dog Shows outside the US are not as frequent as here in America, but they make up for that with incredible entries and pageantry.  Arguably the most prestigious of all dog shows is the United Kingdom’s annual homage to the dog, Crufts.  This year’s Crufts is the 120th iteration of the gigantic event and has more than 20,000 entries from all over the world including 19 entries from the US.  For those of us who cannot attend Crufts offers pay for view of a multitude of events over the next three days.

Today the 4,604 Gun Dogs, analogous to our Sporting Group, held sway.  Judge Dr Ronald W James chose the nine year old veteran Flatcoated Retriever, SH CH Vbos The Kentuckian, as his Best of Group.  Reserve went to the Irish Water Spaniel, SH CH Stanegate Sparks Will Fly (AI), Third to the Cocker Spaniel (here we would call it an English Cocker), SH CH Lujesa Touch The Sky JW, and Fourth to the Golden Retriever, Linirgor MacTavish.

Jet is the top winning Flatcoat in the UK and the winner of the 2009 & 2008 Flatcoated Retriever Society’s National Specialties.   Congratulations to breeder/owner James W Irvine.

JUST A SUNDAY DRIVE AWAY

 The Alamo
San Antonio's Most Recognizable Landmark

We are happy to report that just about every one in the US will have an AKC all breed dog show within an easy drive this week.  The fun will start Thursday with shows in Tennessee and Texas.  The Nashville Kennel Club & the Tullahoma Kennel Club Of Tennessee will give us four in the tony town of Franklin TN while the Kennel Club Of Greater Victoria & the San Antonio Kennel Club will hold their four shows in beautiful San Antonio TX.

For those who can manage to do a three day weekend try the Monticello New York Kennel Club’s & the  Saw Mill River Kennel Club’s offering in Milton NY or the Garden City Kansas Kennel Club in their hometown, both beginning Friday.   In the Florida , the Everglades Terrier Club will start things off on Friday in West Palm Beach FL before the Palm Beach County Dog Fanciers Association offers up their two all breed shows.

The rest of our shows will be of the two day, Saturday/Sunday variety.  In the Heartland fanciers can choose between the Logansport Kennel Club shows in Auburn IN or the Columbia Missouri Kennel Club’s twofer in Columbia MO while those of you on the West Coast can go South to     Victorville CA for the Apple Valley Kennel Club’s duo or north to  Seattle WA for the hometown Seattle Kennel Club‘s double header.

We have great dogs in every corner of the US.  You are sure to see one of them if you visit one of the above shows this weekend.
