THE RANKINGS RACE

One of the services we provide to the dog show community is an up to date ranking of our Top Ten Dogs.  Our numbers are based on ACK official results augmented by the reported counts from superintendents MBF and Onofrio (widely believed to be reliable) and our estimates from our own mathematical model, which has had a margin of error of less than 0.5 percent over the last three years. (which is way better than the average national polling organizations)

We have received several requests for the exact numbers we have in our rankings.  We have purposely not included the exact numbers because we don't want to quibble over a dozen points variance in a 30,000 total.  We provide the following chart with the warning that the numbers are ESTIMATES and published for our readers amusement.   So enjoy!

Michelle Santana

This year’s AKC/Eukanuba National Championship featured the first  Breeder Stakes Finals.  Each of the five finalists had qualified in one of five regional finals in Canada and the United states, by exhibiting three dogs of  their own breeding from at least two separate litters.  In the finals, they had the freedom of showcasing just one dog of their breeding.

The winner of the inaugural Eukunaba Breeders Stakes Final was Michelle Santana of Foxfire Dobermans.  Michele chose CH FoxFire Love Monster to represent her program in the finals.   Michelle, who was the working Groups nominee this year for AKC Breeder of the Year, has dedicated her program to producing Dobermans that are temperamentally and physically sound.  Breeder/owner/handler of seven generations of Foxfire Dobermans, Michelle is a recipient of The Doberman Pinscher Club of America’s “Breeder of Excellence,” for  producing sixteen DPCA Register of Merit Dobermans  Foxfire Dobermans have produced 110 champions and 56 performance-titled dogs.

SUNNY BEACHES OR SNOWY SLOPES?

South Beach, Miami FL

With frigid temperatures across much of these United States this week, dog fanciers may be well advised to visit one of the three more temperate venues this week..  The funs starts today in sunny Miami with the Toy Dog Club Of South Florida  show limited to the little guys.  The South Dade Kennel Club & Greater Miami Dog Club will follow with four all breed events.

Mornings will be chilly this week, but exhibitors can expect generally pleasant conditions in Dallas TX for the North Texas Terrier Club, Trinity Valley Kennel Club, Greater Collin Kennel Club, Texas Kennel Club shows beginning Thursday.  There’s only two shows in El Paso TX, but the temperatures will be a little higher for the Onate Trail Dog Fanciers Association ‘s Saturday/Sunday offerings.  The weather is always perfect in Costs Mesa CA and this week there will be four dog shows courtesy of the Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association Of Orange County & the Malibu Kennel Club to really make the weekend perfect

Everywhere else it will be hard core dog enthusiasts braving frigid winter weather to get to their favorite shows.  New Englanders, will have snow at the Middlesex County Kennel Club, Ladies' Dog Club, & Eastern Dog Club’s four shows beginning Thursday in Providence RI.  There will be temperatures right around the freezing mark in Gettysburg PA on Saturday for the Chambersburg Area Kennel Club singleton show.  Expect the same for the Greater Hickory Kennel Club & Forsyth Kennel Club’s three shows starting Friday in Winston-Salem NC.

It’s going to be below zero temps and lots of snow for this weekend’s Granite City Kennel Club Of St. Cloud, Minnesota two shows which makes the expected  rainy 40 degree s in Ridgefield WA seem balmy by comparison for the Willamette Toy Dog Fanciers two shows on Thursday & Friday.  The rest of the Groups will join in on Saturday & Sunday for the Greater Clark County Kennel Club’s two all breed shows.

So whether you look better in beach wear or a snow suit, there’s a dog show for you this weekend and the AKC purebred dogs will love you for coming.

AKC 2010 BREEDER OF THE YEAR

Debbie Butt, Sporting Field Whippets
2010 AKC Breeder of the Year

In the Dog Show Poop universe, the most  revered person in the dog world is the breeder.  We spend a lot of time recognizing the exhibitors, professional & amateur, here, but none of this would exist without the breeders, many of who have spent a lifetime dedicated to their respective breeds., contributing the knowledge, skill, & perseverance to effect an actual impact on the breed.  Sunday night AKC recognized seven of the top breeders in the US:
  • Sporting: Gregory Siner – Clifton, NJ, Pooles Ide Irish Water Spaniels
  • Hound: Dionne (Debbie) Butt – Toms Brook, VA, Sporting Field Whippets
  • Working: Michelle Santana – Sunny Valley, OR, Foxfire Doberman Pinschers
  • Terrier: Margery Good – Cochransville, PA, Goodspice Sealyham Terriers
  • Toy: Carol Harris – Reddick, FL, Bo-Bett Italian Greyhounds
  • Non-Sporting: Joanne Reed – Santa Rosa, CA, Windrift Keeshonden
  • Herding: Leslie Frank – Kensington, NH, Propwash Australian Shepherds
The 2010 AKC Breeder of The Year is Debbie Butt of Sporting Field Whippets.   Debbie has been associated with Whippets most of her life.  Debbbie’s parent’s registered their first dog under the Sporting Field appellation in 1945.  Whippets joined the family in the late 1960s and before long Sporting Field Whippets were topping the rankings.

CH Sporting Field’s Clansman

Debbie started winning with her Whippets at an early age, winning her first BIS as a teenager  in 1976 with their Canadian import, CH Winterfold’s Bold Bid.  Many BIS would follow, including the BISS at the American Whippet Club’s 1984 national specialty with CH Sporting Field’s Clansman aka Buoy.  Buoy, the winner of the Hound Group at the 1981 Westminster Kennel Club show, holds the breed record for most BIS at 59.

Debbie’s breeding philosophy focuses on proper temperament and type conforming to function for a Whippet that is the ideal dog in the home, field, and the show ring.  Our congratulations to Debbie and all the Group nominees and our heartfelt thanks to them all for their irreplaceable contributions to the dog world.

MORE FROM LONG BEACH CA

We are still suffering from sleep deprivation after our marathon coverage of this weekend’s AKC/Eukanubna National Championship.  However, we still have lots of details that we still want to bring to you.

Junior Handler Katie Mazurowski &

This year’s BBE BIS was the MinPin, Major bred, owned, and handled by Kimberly A Calvacca.  Congratulations to Kim, co-breeders Anthony Calvacca, Robin Greenslade, & Howard Schwell.
