We don’t know whether it is the weather or the number of football fans or what, but we have to scramble to get show results from Wisconsin. We originally posted this report with just partial results from this past weekend’s shows in Oshkosh, but our readers generously helped us fill in the blanks.
They started on Friday with Richard Lake doing the BIS honors for the Packerland Kennel Club (even the dog lovers are Cheeseheads). In his final were the Golden Retriever, CH Avalor INXS, the Whippet, CH Sporting Field’s Bahama Sands, the Newfoundland, CH Skipper King’s Eminence of Helluland, the Norfolk Terrier, CH Max-Well’s Violet, the Brussell’s Griffon, CH Knolland Little Devon O’Luna, the Standard Poodle, CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the Old English Sheepdog, CH Barkshire’s Jim Dandy.
BIS was the impressive Newfie, Lincoln. Unfortunately for us, Lincoln doesn't often show outside his region. He still managed three all breed BIS and 17 Working Group Firsts last year. Congratulations to breeder Bela Siklosi and owners Laura Vande Ven & Peggy Helming.
Saturday’s Winnigamie Dog Club saw Eugene Blake with the same Whippet, Standard Poodle, & OES along with the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, CH Mudcreek Red Moose, the Rottweiler, CH Cammcastles Friar Tuck, the Border Terrier, CH Tyrolian Eight Belles At Meadowlake, and the Pomeranian, CH Char’s Bringin’ Sexy Back. BIS went to the dog least likely to be owned by an NFL player, the Standard Poodle, London. It’s the second BIS this month for the 22 month old.
Sunday hosts were the Oshkosh Kennel Club & Arley Hussin. The lucky seven finalists were the above named Golden, Whippet, Border Terrier, & Pom, the Doberman Pinscher, CH Abadie’s Crystal Vision, the Tibetan Terrier, CH Cedar C And Barnstorm’s Ltd Edition, and the Rough Collie, CH Highcrift Bourne Ultimatum TD. BIS went to the 2009’s top winning Tibetan Terrier, DJ. DJ finished last year with two all breed BIS & 22 Non-Sporting Group Firsts. Congratulations to breeder/owner Donna Ogden, co-owners Patricia Bernardo & Mary Lou Laffler, and handler Lynn Meyer.

There were a few class dogs each day, including a lovely 6 month old puppy girl that I could have taken home with me. Nice construction, lovely markings, and an excellent temperament. Both judges have done for Argus in the past, but both made us work for our breed wins as the other Specials were worthy dogs. I drove 6 hours on Saturday and we showed (very) late in the afternoon. My handling was a bit off in the Group ring. Good enough to get by, but my timing was off. Fortunately Argus had his act together and showed well. I was curious to see how he would handle showing after a relatively long trip, as I normally get to the show the night before. He obviously handled it better than I did! The awesome Standard Poodle won the Group and went on to Best In Show. I've placed behind a lot of crappy Standards over the years, but this dog is outstanding and deserves everything he accomplishes. He should have a fabulous year - and unfortunately I will probably run into him on a regular basis. Oh well. His handler is extremely nice, very professional and does a fabulous job. The Tibetan Terrier was Group Two. I've beaten him from time to time, but lost to him more than I've won. He's from the Chicago area, is professionally handled, and was the top winning TT last year by a huge margin. A very good dog and an excellent showdog. Argus was Group Three, which was probably the best we could do under that particular judge, so I was pleased.
ReplyDeleteThe Standard Poodle was not shown the second day so it opened up a spot in the group, so to speak. The Tibetan Terrier won the Group and went on to Best In Show, and Argus was Second, showing extremely well, which made for a very nice weekend. We ran into some really tough NS Groups last year, and it would appear that 2010 will be more of the same. More NS dogs heavily campaigned by big name handlers in my regular showing area. Oh well. We do our best. Argus has had an extremely good career and defeated many top NS dogs. Because he is sound, typey, attractive AND a good show dog, he can normally hold his own unless it's a judge who just doesn't use Dals in the Group, or who doesn't use owner-handlers - and there are some of those.
thinking of purchasing a Whippet but already own 2 cats. please advise. Pete
