Saturday was the 140th annual Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby. The winner, California Chrome, ran a strategic race hanging back for more than half the race before powering his way to a lead at the top of the stretch.

Consider our Top Two Dogs All Breeds, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Claircreek’s Impression de Matisse, and the Old English Sheepdog, GCH CH Bugaboo’s Picture Perfect, who have been in a sprint for the first third of the season, leaving the rest of the field barely within sight. The PWD, Matisse, has amassed over 51,000 points leading the OES, Swagger, by 9,000 points and the rest of the field by a staggering 37,000 points.

On Saturday Matisse and Swagger both added another BIS to their 214 resumes. Matisse was in Jefferson WI where judge Eric Ringel named him his BIS and the Parti-Colored Cocker Spaniel, CH Monthaven’s The Birdcage. Rounding out his final were the 15” Beagle, GCH CH Tashtins Lookin For Trouble, the Airedale, GCH CH Epoch’s New York Minute, the Chinese Crested, GCH CH Déjàvu I Want’A Talk About Me, the Chow Chow, CH Flamingstar The Lion King, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Lockenhaus' Rumor Has It V Kenlyn. Matisse is the top winning Working Dog of all time with 137 career BIS, 42 of which have come this year.

Meanwhile Swagger was judge Barbara Dempsey Alderman’s BIS at yesterday’s Intermountain Kennel Club show in South Jordan UT. Also catching judge Alderman’s eye was her RBIS, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Del Zarzosa Salvame From Afterglow. Joining them in the final ring were the Clumber Spaniel, GCH CH Clussexx Over The Legal Limit, the Wirehaired Dachshund, CH Del Prado’s Bar Code W, the Alaskan Malamute, GCH CH Mojo's Continuation Of A Myth, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Absolutely Talk Of The Town, and the Pug, GCH CH Winsome-Nirvana-Blaque Triple Play. Swagger is the Number One Herding Dog with 24 BIS and 45 Herding Groups this year.
