He opened the four day set with a BIS and he closed it the same way. The Pekingese, Malachy, took home his second Best of the weekend and his fifth of the year. This is shaping up to be a very interesting year.

GILBERT S KAHN

The dog world has lost one of its great patrons, AKC Judge Gilbert S Kahn died at his home in Palm Beach FL on Monday.

A member of one of the great philanthropic families in America, he was the son of the late Janet Annenberg Hooker, whose collection of jewelry and gems form the foundation of the Smithsonian Museum's Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems & Minerals. His uncle, the late Ambassador Walter H. Annenberg, an early supporter of President Ronald Reagan, extensive impressionist art collection is featured at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Gilbert had extensive charitable interests in Miami, Palm Beach, New York City and Newport, RI. He was Chairman of The AKC Museum of the Dog, former director of New York’s Metropolitan Opera, and a member of the board of overseers for the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, to name a few. He is remembered in the dog world as an avid breeder of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Shih Tzu and a charming, considerate judge. He was in attendance at the Progressive Dog Club’s recent show in New York.

Our condolences to son John Noffo Kahn, his brother Donald Paul Kahn, and all the Kahn family.

ANOTHER COLLIE BIS

CH Kelso's Moon Dancin' HSAs

Patricia Hess braved the record snow falls to call the BIS at yesterday’s Rockland County Kennel Club show in Suffern NY. Her Best, the Rough Collie, CH Kelso's Moon Dancin' HSAs, was appropriately dressed for the occasion in a luxurious blue merle coat. It was the first conformation BIS this year for the working royal, Prince Phillip. Congratulations to breeder/owner Dr Nancy Kelso DVM, and co-owner Timothy Duvall.

STYLISH NAMES AT POSH LOCALES

There can be no dispute that many of our top dogs evoke images of elegance and refined tastes. So what could be more fitting that a Chanel and a Gucci show up at two of our most stylish venues?

CH Starline Chanel strikes a pose while winning the
Hound Group at the 2010 Westminster Kennel Club Show

Yesterday in that poshest of Southern California coastal towns, Del Mar, the Whippet, CH Starline Chanel, was Wendy Paquette’s choice for Best In Show on day one of the Silver Bay Kennel Club Of San Diego. Breed Judge Carol Duffy starts
CH Sylvan Argent It’s All About Me on her way to BIS

Meanwhile, in Boca Raton, the Florida town that is the sportier sister of Palm Beach, we had some sibling rivalry emerging. The Rough Collie, CH Sylvan Argent It’s All About Me, aka Gucci, younger sister to 2009 number one Rough Collie, CH Sylvan Argent Simply Irresistible, aka Sax, picked up her first BIS at yesterday’s Boca Raton Kennel Club show under Jeffrey Pepper. Gucci was bred by Dr Cindi Bossart, Connie Dubois & James Efron, is owned by Cindi, Connie, Jennifer Mosing, & Gail Currie, and handled by Brian Livingston. Congratulations to them all. Shouldn't they have spelled it Saks?

FIRST OF EIGHT IN FLORIDA

CH Genesis Silverado

Once again while some fanciers are fighting it out in the inhospitable climates of Chicago and Rockland County NY, others are in the much more appealing surroundings of the Sunshine State. Today’s Ochlockonee River Kennel Club Of Florida show was the first of eight over the next nine days. Today the Afghan Hound, CH Genesis Silverado, picked up his second BIS of the year. Dylan is one of three sighthounds in our current Top Ten. Now that’s the makings of a race.

CHICAGO DAY THREE

CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream

The Midwest Merry-Go-Round continued today with day one of the International Kennel Club Of Chicago.

James G Reynolds’ superlative seven were the German Wirehaired Pointer, CH Ripsnorter’s Mt View Lookout, the Scottish Deerhound, CH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, the Boxer, CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek, the Pekingese, CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the Bulldog, CH Kepley’s Showbiz Razzle Dazzle, and the Old English Sheepdog, CH Lambluv’s Gambolon Blue Thunder.

BIS went to the Boxer, Scarlet. Scarlet now has three all breed Bests to her credit this year. We look for last year’s number seven dog to be a regular in the BIS ring again this year.

LET IT SNOW

CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice

They say it’s a snow-a-cane in New York this weekend, but for our intrepid dog fanciers it’s a show-a-cane as they kick off the three day weekend in Suffern NY with the Wallkill Kennel Club. Results are spotty, but we do know that the number one dog in the US, the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, was Dr Robert A Indeglia’s Best In Show. That’s lucky number 13 this year for Dodger & handler Amy Booth.

CHICAGO DAY TWO

WHILE YOU WEREN'T LOOKING

CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice
& Handler Amy Booth under the lights in Florida

Everywhere you looked this week you saw a certain Scottish Terrier. However, the Terrier that is on fire this year is the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice.

Dodger and handler Amy Booth picked up two more all breed BIS this weekend, grabbing both the top prizes at the two shows hosted by the South Arkansas Kennel Club in Camden AR this weekend. Saturday, Michelle Billings could have chosen the Weimaraner, CH Doc’s Seven Ships Of Acadia, the Petit Bassett Griffon Vendeen, CH Jodell Boogie Back To Texas, the Giant Schnauzer, CH Sonnenshein River Chase, the Pekingese, CH Franshaw Hear Me Roar, the Dalmatian, CH Royalty’s Splash Of Taylor, or the Australian Shepherd, CH Acura’s Blue Sage, but she didn’t.

HIGH FLYYING ADORED: SADIE'S MEDIA BLITZ

One of the most fun parts of the Westminster Kennel Club Show is the media blitz the day after. Here’s a sampling of the appearances made by BIS winner, the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot.

DOG SHOW APPETITE

We are still on a Westminster high, but we turn our attention to the coming weekend and the real beginning of the dog show year. We know that all the official records are kept from January 1st through December 31st, but the fact is most of last year’s top dogs were still in the ring in January, keeping their game sharp for Westminster. The question is “Who will ride the Westminster Wave out of New York?”

Try the Strawberry Cluster in Lakeland FL

We will have a somewhat light schedule with only seven sites hosting shows. In the Northeast, there are dog shows a la Jenny Craig, two shows in Hartford CT hosted by the Elm City Kennel Club & the First Company Governor's Foot Guard Athletic Association (one of my favorite club names). Down in Greenville SC enjoy a three course weekend prepared by the Greenville, Spartanburg & Hendersonville Kennel Clubs. If you have the leisure time, live large with the Strawberry Cluster, a four show feast in Lakeland FL courtesy of the Sara Bay KC & the Lakeland Winter Haven KC.

Once you head inland, it’s all two day drive throughs. Try Des Moines IA wit the Cyclone Country Kennel Club Of Ames, Camden AR with the South Arkansas Kennel Club, San Marcos TX with the Guadalupe Valley Dog Fanciers, or San Jose CA with the Santa Clara Valley Kennel Club. However, if you are a Toy Dog fancier show up on Saturday in San Jose for the Nor-Cal Toy Dog Fanciers little guy show. The all breed even s will follow Sunday and Monday.

Remember, the limited show schedule means that you are likely to see great dogs at any of these AKC shows.

SADIE WINS WESTMINSTER

CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot
2010 Westminster Kennel Club BIS

We can’t say it was unexpected. We had seen it too many times. The Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, 2009’s number one dog all breeds, had won it all, whether it was at that Terrier Super Bowl, the Montgomery County Kennel Club show in October, at the Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s annual Thanksgiving staple, or the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in December. She carried a resume with 111 all breed Best In Shows into Madison Square Garden. Yet, this was the 134th annual Westminster Kennel Club show and the atmosphere had been electric all day.

CH J'Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice
Strikes a Pose in the Terrier Group

Sadie was challenged in the Terrier Group by the current number one Dog, the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice. Dodger had finished last year as the number five dog all breeds and the number two Terrier. He has ten all breed Bests already this year. Dodger gave it everything he had this evening, but Sadie would not concede an inch, utilizing every bit of stubborn Scottie attitude to pull off the Group win.

The Toy Poodle, CH Smash Jp Moon Walk
Moves Across BIS Ring

Then she was off to face the evening’s other six finalists, three of whom were fellow top ten dogs from last year, the number two dog, the Doberman, CH Allure Blazing Star Alisaton, the number three dog, the Puli, CH Cordmaker Field Of Dreams, and the number six dog, the Toy Poodle, CH Smash Jp Moon Walk. The remaining three finalists, the Brittany, CH Willowick Talltean, the Whippet, CH Starline Chanel, and the French Bulldog, CH Robobull Fabelhaft Im On Fire tonight, had already dispatched the number one dog in their respective Groups.

Handler Carrisa DeMilta Shimpeno

( Photo by Justin Lane, European Pressphoto Agency)

As soon as the Doberman, CJ, and handler Carrisa DeMilta Shimpeno, went to the center of judge Elliot Weiss’ ring, the crowd knew that no one was going to concede the outcome without a fight. Each of the seven dogs stepped up their performances above even their outstanding Group wins. Especially notable was the Doberman’s intensity when standing at attention, staring down the judge and the Toy Poodle, Walker, showing an animation and fire that belied his status as the smallest dog in the ring.

Protestors Invade BIS Ring

However, despite the fact, that Sadie had just completed an exhausting Terrier Group, and despite the distraction of anti-purebred dog protestors momentarily invading the ring, she answered all the challenges with an incredible performance, riveting her attention on handler Gabriel Rangel and judge Weiss whenever he looked her way. It ended as it had so many times before with the other six handlers congratulating Gabriel and Sadie standing on her back legs demanding that she be given credit for the win and we all do.

Our congratulations to Sadie’s breeders, Mary O’Neal & Anstamm Kennels (Miriam "Buffy" Stamm and Cindy Cooke), her owner, Amelia Musser, and handler Gabriel Rangel. We thank them all on behalf of dog fanciers everywhere for giving us two years of incredible dog show memories, especially this 134th Westminster Dog Show.

GARDEN PARTY PART TWO

You all are invited to join us for Night Two of the Dog Show Poop Garden Party. The doors are now open. Set the TV dial to the USA Network & join us and your blogging buddies for the liveliest coverage you can get of tonight’s judging. It’s the next best thing to being there at ringside.
