NORTH STAR HERDING GROUP CLUB

Kalacsos Kato

We have more news from chilly St Paul MN.  At the North Star Herding Group Club, the Puli, Kalacsos Kato, was Houston Clark’s BIS.  It was just the second AKC show for the Hungarian born Danish import.  It looks as if the Europeans will have continue to be a major influence here in in the US in 2011.  Congratulations to breeder Jozsef Soos, and owners Toni Powell, Jesper Ravn, and owner/handler Nancy Powell.

The Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, was bit of a scene stealer during the drama that was the last week of 2010, winning two of the four last shows of the year.  She is starting the year in similar fashion, grabbing the win today at the giant Hounds only Inland Empire Hound Club of Southern California show in Indio CA.  Chanel and handler Lori Wilson finished 2010 as the Number Five Dog All Breeds with 26 BIS and a remarkable 110 Hound Group Firsts, including the Groups at the Westminster Kennel Club show and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.  Congratulations to Lori, breeder Diane Bowen, breeders/owners Lori Lawrence & Carey Lawrence, and owner Nicole Lawrence.

NORTH STAR TOY DOG CLUB

CH Ta-Jon Just Bee-Ing Silly

Palm Springs isn’t the only site with limited breed warm ups this weekend, although it may be a bit of a stretch to call the North Star Toy Dog Club show in frosty St Paul MN a “warm up”.  However, today’s winner was wrapped in a luxurious fur coat.  Gloria Geringer BIS was the Maltese, CH Ta-Jon Just Bee-Ing Silly.  Justine ended 2010 with two all breed BIS and ten Toy Group Firsts.  Congratulations to breeder/owner Tammy Simon and owner/handler Tim Lehman.

GREATER DAYTONA DOG FANCIERS

CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman

The Sunshine State is the Dog Show State this month with 15 all breed shows in January.  Today’s opener, the Greater Daytona Dog Fanciers Association show, was in Ormond Beach near Daytona and featured James White choosing a BIS from among the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Star K's Mile Hi Valentine, the Whippet, CH Bo-Bett’s Speed Demon, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall I dream Of Style, the Skye Terrier, CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman, the Pug, GCH CH Caper's Sirius Endeavor , the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy, and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, CH Dalarno Nite Song At Morningstar.

OUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION

Palm Springs Kennel Club Show Grounds

We’ve taken down the Christmas decorations and put the visiting family on flights back to their homes and we are now ready to get back to our world, the world of AKC conformation shows.  However, like an athlete that has just completed a marathon, we shall take it easy at first.

This coming week we have just 15 all breed shows in six locations.  However we start the year with what could be the biggest single show we will see all year, the Saturday Palm Springs Kennel Club show in Indio CA.  With nearly 3400 dogs entered in the regular classes, a dog getting a Group Four there could collect more points than some of the BIS winners elsewhere in the US this weekend.  In addition to the two giant all breed shows, there are seven limited breed shows on Thursday and Friday.

Many in the dog world spend much of January in Florida where there are more dog shows than BINGO tournaments this month, with 13 shows from the 7th through the 22nd.  It all starts this week with four shows in Ormond Beach, just north of Daytona Beach,  on Friday with two hosted by the Greater Daytona Dog Fanciers Association followed by two courtesy of the Jacksonville Dog Fanciers' Association.

Rounding out the week are three shows in Tallmadge OH with the Columbiana County Kennel Club & the Rubber City Kennel Club, two in Pendleton SC with the Clemson Kennel Club, two in St Paul MN with the Land O' Lakes Kennel club, and two in Glen Rose TX, 80 miles SW of Dallas, with the Nolan River Kennel Club.  So make this your New Year’s resolution, attend more AKC dog shows this year!

2010 NUMBER ONE DOG ALL BREEDS

GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice

We always like to ring in the New Year with a bang and we couldn’t have asked for a more thrilling end to the year that the down to the wire rankings race.  For most of the year the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, led the field, though he was constantly challenged by the Number Two Dog, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, and the Number Three Dog, the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed.  By November, the Smooth & Peke had pulled ahead of the field.

Weekend after weekend the Peke, Malachy, would come within one win of overtaking the Smooth, Dodger, only to have Dodger answer with another BIS.  However, on November 20th Malachy would grab the top prize at the big Lima Kennel Club show in Columbus OH and take the Number One ranking.  It was beginning to look like the determined little Peke would remain there for the duration of the year.  However, there is nothing like Terrier Tenacity and Dodger and owner/handler Amy Booth would doggedly pursue Malachy until they finally regained the top spot on December 18th  with a huge win at the Richland County Kennel Club show in Cleveland OH.  He would double down the next day taking the BIS at the Western Reserve Kennel Club show.  It all came down to the last week of the year and the Final Four shows in San Mateo CA.  Malachy fired the opening salvo on the 28th with a BIS at the Oakland Kennel Club show.  However the Peke’s valiant final rally would fail and Dodger would finish at the head of the line for 2010.

Dodger first caught our eye in January of 2009 when he went three for four in Florida against the 2009 Crufts winner, the Sealyham Terrier, CH Efbe’s Hidalgo At Goodspice.  We immediately made him a DOG2WATCH.  He has since gone on to become the winningest Smooth Fox Terrier in history, winning 105 all breed BIS including 74 this year alone.  Dodger was bred by William Dalling & Stacy Turner, is owned by Sandra & Howard Hoffen & Phil & Amy Booth.  Our congratulations to them all on a splendid campaign and career.  We also offer out sincere thanks to Team Dodger for providing us with one of the most exciting years in recent history.

FINAL SHOW OF THE YEAR

GCH CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber

The 2010 race to Number One Dog All Breeds came down to the wire at the San Mateo Kennel Club Show.  Rick Gschwender gathered the final final seven  in San Mateo CA.   They included the Norwegian Elkhound, GCH CH Vin-Melca’s Voyager, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, and the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber.  We will bring you the full lineup shortly.

Best went to the Bouvier, Webber, one of our original DOGS2WATCH.  Webber and handler Larry Fenner have collected eight BIS this year.    We have heard that Larry  Fenner will be leaving the professional handling ranks to take another job.  It's a big loss to the show ring.  Hopefully we will still see Larry frequently.  We find it fitting that he should cap his handling career with a BIS over the toughest competition AKC has to offer.

The win decides the National Title of Number One Dog All Breeds of 2010.  Congratulations to the little engine who could, the winningest Smooth Fox Terrier in history, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice!

SAN MATEO DAY THREE

The Kennel Club of Salinas is the third of our Final Four shows of the year as we hurtle toward a decision on who will be 2010’s Top Dog.  Today’s BIS was called by Carl Gomes who had his pick of the Sussex Spaniel, GCH CH Seamist On A Windward Tack RN, yesterday’s BIS, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Aviators Luck Be A Lady, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the Bulldog, GCH CH Bodhi's Light, Life, And Love, and the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber.

He chose the Whippet, Chanel.  Cha Cha and handler Lori Wilson have repeatedly shown they can can hang with the big boys, showing in every venue in the US and winning several of the marquee events in the US.  Chanel now makes tomorrow’s San Mateo Kennel Club show a must see for us all.
