YES, VIRGINIA, THERE IS A DELAWARE

Thanks to Vice President Joe Biden, most of Ameica now knows that the state of Delaware is close enough to Washington DC that one can commute to the Senate. For most of us, it is easy to overlook Delaware. So we are not surprised that AKC just an hour ago posted this past weekend’s results from Bear DE.

We had I-Reports from an exhibitor on Friday and Saturday. You may remember that the Doberman, CH Allure Blazing Star Alisaton, and the Smooth Fox, CH Foxlorr Double Dare, took the top prizes on Friday and Saturday respectively at the Wilminton Kennel Club’s two shows. Friday’s other finalists were the Labrador Retriever, CH Casbars Hart To Hart, the Irish Wolfhound, CH Dun Myrica Speaker Of Eagle, the Bedlington Terrier, CH Velvety Angel Eyes, the Italian Greyhound, CH Honore's Lilly-Belle, the Bulldog, CH Kepley’s Showbiz Razzle Dazzle, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Stone Ridge Whol Stop T Rain.

Saturday, the Lab, Wolhound, and Dobie all were back to greet the Chinese Crested, CH Camelot’s All Hallows Eve, the Dalmatian, CH Perdita’s Absolute Adorable, and the Briard, CH Sendoro’s Absolutely Irresistible.

Sunday, the Penn Treaty Kennel Club and judge Donovan Thompson took over. Judge Thompson saw the same Smooth Fox, IG, Bulldog, and GSD as his predescessors in addition to the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon , CH Ch Fireside’s Spontaneous Combustion, the Scottish Deerhound, CH Thistleglen Nola, and the Boxer, CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream.

Sunday’s BIS went to the Boxer, Scarlett, the country’s number ten dog. We suspect that this weekend’s results will improve that ranking.

  4. While this site is informative and fun to read it is discouraging that the only thing reported are Best In Show wins. Yes these top dogs are nice and their achievements are wonderful but the vast majority of them have mega dollars behind them that in today’s economic climate the average exhibitor cannot hope to compete against. With perhaps the exception of June’s Sealy and Joan’s Bedlington most of these dogs are owned or co/owned by the wealthy who can really put money into advertising and handled by Pros. One top dog I know from his handler travels by chartered jet from show to show!

The average breeder/owner/handler or owner/handler cannot even attempt to compete on the scale of these dogs. We are seeing a decline in entries and we need new people in the sport. When the average person cannot even hope for a group placement let alone a best in show it is very discouraging to people in the sport. Clubs attempting to recoup the loss of entries are raising entry fees, parking fees etc. They are squeezing the average exhibitor out and this is becoming a sport of the extremely wealthy. If you analyze the entries at a show the majority are made up by the average exhibitor and not these *stars*. If the average breeder is eliminated where are these wealthy backers, co/owners and handlers going to get the dogs to show?

I would like to see your blog focus a little more on what else is happening at the shows and not so much on those BIG Best In Show winners. For instance, in my breed a B/O/H dog went group 2 at Chesapeake. A novice O/H went group 4 at Myrtle Beach. For myself I won Bred By Exhibitor Best In Show at Myrtle Beach. Anstamm Scottish Terriers won winners or better for the *5th* consecutive year at the roving Scottish Terrier specialty. I’m sure there are others in different breeds all over the country who had wonderful achievements last weekend. Why not report on some of those?
