Reporting on yesterday’s Virginia show we were reminded that last year we saw several dogs that entered the 2008 campaign too late to make it into the national rankings. Some of these were recent imports and some of these were young dogs who are just beginning their show careers. So, in case you missed them the following are DOGS2WATCH:

First among this group is the German Shepherd Dog, CH Woodside Pacino. Owner handled by Mr. GSD, James Moses, “Tony” was bred by Sandy Anderson & Linda Wheeler and owned by Moses, Roger Reichler & Janet Lange. The three year old dog entered last year’s campaign late, but still managed to finish at number 20, with 16 BIS and 88 Group wins.

Next we have the Toy Poodle, CH Smash JP Moon Walk, from the trio that gave us the 2007 Dog of the Year, CH Smash JP Win A Victory. Breeder Yukiko Omura, owner Ron Scott, and handler Kaz Hosaka have another great one here, finishing an abbreviated 2008 season with seven BIS and 17 Group Firsts. “Walker” is co-owned by Debbie Burk.

The next three dogs are all Terriers. While it is true we are Terrier enthusiasts and we have owned and shown a few, we present this list with a modicum of bias, Each of the following dogs caught our eye by upsetting some highly regarded dogs.

A Swedish import, CH Velvety Angel Eyes, surprised many back in October by going BIS while beating the country’s number one Terrier, the Sealyham, CH CH Efbe's Hidalgo At Goodspice. This pretty liver colored bitch, bred by Lise Lotte Nilsson and is owned by Nilsson, Joan Weiskopf & Anki Bengtson, finished 2008 with two BIS and seven top group prizes.

Charmin also go no respect last weekend in Florida from the young upstart Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J'cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, who beat him three out of four meetings. “Dodger”, bred by William Dalling & Stacy Turner, owned by Dalling, Phil & Amy Booth and Howard & Sandy Hoffen, and owner handled by Amy, is just 21 months old, but has two BIS, and six Group Firsts in the last twelve months.

Also last weekend we saw a Welsh Terrier, CH Sanherpinc Paisa, take back to back Group Firsts at the giant Palm Spring Kennel Club events. Paisa first caught our eye back on 6 December when she beat the number seven dog in the country, the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, on her way to a Group One at the Malibu Kennel Club show. Paisa was bred by Santiango Pinto, is owned by Bruce Schwartz & Larisa Hotchin, and handled by Terrier expert Wood Wornall.

Lost in the drama around the last show of 2008, was the Toy Group Winner at the Oakland Kennel Club show in San Mateo CA. Deena Simon piloted the Pomeranian, Starlight’s Smile From Siam, from the classes all the way to the final seven to face the 2008 Top Dog, the Giant Schnauzer, CH Galilee's Pure Of Spirit. A belated congratulations to Deena and breeder/owner Suradej Ekviriyakit.

We hope we see more of these dogs in 2009. We think we will.

  1. Something in your post made me giggle: The image of that dainty little Pom nose-to-nose against the Giant Schnauzer!

Great photos Billy! Thanks for sharing!

  2. The PBGV CH ROKEENA CARTE BLANCHE was Best In FL today. Amy's Smooth won the Terrier group again.

  3. Holly BIS again in VA! To tie the top winning sporting dog of all time BIS record!!!! GO HOLLY!!! She has broken almost every other sporting dog record! One more best and i believe if I am not mistaking she will break all!

  4. If anyone thinks that bedlington is really that impressive, they should re-read the standard. She is completly flat-backed (her roach is groomed in), her coat is extremely incorrect with no guard hair or color, she is HUGE (bigger than a lot of the dog specials out there), she is so cow-hocked, I don't know how ANY judge could miss it, just watch her in the ring some time, it's not hard to miss. The only reason she got those two Best In Show awards is because of the relationship between the judges and this dog's handler. The only BIS this handler got on her last special was under one of the two judges who gave this bitch a BIS...coincidence? No.

  5. I allowed the above post re: CH Velvety Angel Eyes because I encourage people to have open and free discussions. However, I feel strongly that such comments should be signed by the commenter. You are entitled to your opinion, but you should have the courage to stand behind it.

I will say that though I have never seen this dog in person, that I have heard mulitple good things about her. She is the only Bedlington to win a BIS last year and she won seven groups as well as multiple other group placements. Were all those breed/group/BIS judges crooked?

You have 24 hours to claim your comment before I delete it. And no, I have no connection to any of the parties.

  6. I think that person who put that post on about CH Velvety Angel Eyes is a VERY jelous Soar LOOSER!!!!!! There just jelous because they cant get a Best In Show on one of there Bedlingtons!

  7. Being in the business as long as I have you get a lot of letters and breed standard mailed and emailed to you.

    Not Signed

They end up in the garbage.

Billy love the blog but if they want to talk trash about dogs have the balls to sign it.

    For obvious

    AKC Judge

  8. The nature of this sport is SPORTSMANSHIP! We pay a judge for their "opinion" if the hater did not like the judge whom gave the Bedlington a BIS, best advice do not show to them. Seems they are jealous perhaps their Bedlington did not win advice get a better dog you could win with. Sad that people like this waste their time putting others down they should spend their time constructively perhaps doing some volunteer work.

  9. Regarding the slam on Joans dog.(Bedlington) The picture does not bring out her color or a good side view. The rest of your garbage is just that --GARBAGE. If you don't have the guts to sign your name, anything you got to say is worthless.
    Regards RONALD TOUSEY member BTCA.

  10. Thanks for the comment Ronald. I will say that the photo I've used is the one supplied by the owners and the one that they have requested I use when featuring her.

  11. Regarding Angel Eyes (Bedlington)
Grow Up...Get over it...and Grow some...

  12. About CH Velvety Angel Eyes: I think it is very sad anyone would show such poor sportsmanship, not to mention outright slam the competition with no regard for the actual quality of the dog. I have been told jealousy is a useless emotion...sounds like someone needs to right their karma and maybe start breeding a better Bedlington to compete with the best instead of being jealous of the best.
