We now have all the results, and we can tell you that the US’ Number One Dog All Breeds, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, is answering all challengers, going Best In Show at today’s Lakawanna Kennel Club show in Bloomsburg PA.  Among the other finalists in Dr Anthony D DiNardo’s BIS ring were the Field Spaniel, CH Nautica’s Got Game, the Scottish Deerhound, CH Gayleward’s  Jaraluv Nike, the Rottweiler, CH Falkore Taking Care Of Business, the Affenpinscher, CH Banana Joe Van Tazari, the Standard Poodle, CH Unique Jewel Of The Crown, and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.  This year’s Top Ten is turning out to be a real nail biter.

CAIRN TERRIER ROVING NATIONAL

CH Hampton Court’s Ashley

Regular readers will know that we are currently showing a Cairn Terrier.  One of the reports we have not published yet was last weekend’s Cairn Terrier Club of America’s roving National Specialty held in conjunction with the Portland Kennel Club’s July 24th show.  Beth Sweigart chose as her Best Of Breed, CH Hampton Court’s Ashley;  Best of Opposite Sex was GCH CH Maverston’s Double Dutch;  Winners Dog & Best of Winners was Scotch Broom Thistle Patriot SE; & Winners Bitch was Argyle Plans For Success.  Ashley was bred and is owned by Victor Malzoni Jr and is handled by Gabriel Rangel.   If you go to Ashley’s Face Book page, you will see some beautiful photos taken my Miguel Betancourt of InFocusByMiguel and some of the exquisite examples of handler Gabriel Rangel’s grooming.  We have several of the shots pinned above our grooming table.  It’s the look that keeps us in love with Terriers.

NUMBER FIVE OR NUMBER FOUR?

GCH CH Dawin Spitfire

There were 2,286 dogs present and competing at today’s Hendersonville Kennel Club in Greenville SC.  The seven that made it to Jon Cole’s final were the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Ripsnorter’s Mt View Lookout, a two year old Norwegian Elhound from the classes, Mountain Shadow Midnight Bear, the Boxer, CH Winfall Brookwood styled Dream, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Lil’Itch Steeplechase, the Toy Poodle, GCH CH Smash Jp Moonwalk, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Dawin Spitfire, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Enchanted‘s American Thunder.  It was the country’s Number Five Dog All Breeds, the black Standard Poodle, Jetta, picking up her 21st BIS this year.  That’s two very big BIS in consecutive weekends.  That will improve a girl’s ranking.

NUMBER TWO CHASING NUMBER ONE

CH PalaceGarden Malachy

We thought we might see a head to head match up between the nation’s top two dogs, but it was not to be.  Number One was absent, but Number Two, the Pekingese, CH PalaceGarden Malachy, showed up in at today’s Dan Emmet Kennel Club show in Marion OH and took the day one BIS.  Also on hand in Douglas Johnson’s final were the Gordon Setter, GCH CH Firethorn & Sandpiper Eaasy On the Eyes, the Petit Basset Griffon, Vendeen, CH Celestial CJ’s Hearts On Fire, the St Bernard, CH Opdyke's Drives Me To Drink, the Welsh Terrier, GCH CH Bayleigh Shaireab's Super Hero, the Boston Terrier, CH Annalee Told Ya So, and the Old English Sheepdog, CH Aryakas Hermes.  Malachy picked up 574 points for the win, but will need three or four more like that to Catch Number One.

FEW AND FAR BETWEEN

Gaviota State Park near Lompoc CA

Once again we have just a few areas where you can find an AKC dog show this weekend.  Seekers of multiple show weekends should head to the Great Lakes Region where you can find four shows beginning Friday in Marion OH courtesy of the Dan Emmett Kennel Club & the Marion Ohio Kennel Club and in Wisconsin where the Waukesha Kennel Club will do Saturday & Sunday in Waukesha followed by Monday & Tuesday with the Burlington Wisconsin Kennel Club in Elkhorn.

In the Northeast you have your choice of a single Saturday show in Cranston RI with the Providence County Kennel Club or three shows starting Friday in Bloomsburg PA with the Lackawanna Kennel Club & the Bald Eagle Kennel Club Of Williamsport PA.  In the Southeast you can spend the same three days in Greenville SC with the Hendersonville Kennel Club, the Greenville Kennel Club, & the Spartanburg Kennel Club.

After that shows are, as they say, few and far between.  800 miles away is Longview TX where the Longview Kennel Club invites you to join them Saturday & Sunday.  1700 miles west is beautiful Lompoc CA, the site of this weekend’s Lompoc Valley Kennel Club’s two shows.  1100 miles north you will find the Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club Of Washington set up for two days in Sequim WA.  Once again the lack of quantity of shows is likely to mean the quality of the competition will be fierce.  We promise you you will have a good time at any of theses shows.

BAD NEWS, GOOD NEWS

Houston’s Astrodome

The bad news is there are just seven places where you can see an AKC dog show this weekend.   The good news is if you live near one of these sites, your chances of seeing the best of the best are the best.    Expect the biggest entries in the big state of Texas where the Houston Kennel Club, the Beaumont Kennel Club, & the Galveston County Kennel Club will kick off a three day weekend on Friday.  Terrier folks should get there early for Wednesday’s and Thursday’s Houston All Terrier Club shows.  There is also a Working Dogs only event on  Wednesday sponsored by the Texas Working Dog Association Of Greater Houston.  All events are indoors in the Reliant Center next to the legendary Astrodome.

New Yorkers will motor on up to the Hudson River Valley to Stormville NY for the Putnam Kennel Club’s two shows Friday & Saturday.  Hound fanciers will then adjourn to Chatham NY for the Hudson River Valley Hound Association limited breed event.  You can also get three all breed shows in central Pennsylvania in the aptly named burg of Centre Hall PA, hosted by the Chambersburg Area Kennel Club & the Nita Nee Kennel Club, starting Friday.

Your remaining choices are traditional Saturday/Sunday fare in Medina OH with the Medina Kennel Club & the Richland County Kennel Club, in Philpot KY with the Owensboro's River City Kennel Club, in Weston WI with the Paper Cities Kennel Club, or 2000 miles west in Portland OR with the Portland Kennel Club.    We expect entries to be large at all these shows.  If you can visit one of these events you won’t be disappointed.
