WWW: THE TERRIER GROUP

We are Terrier people and it has been a Terrier fun fest these past several months. Whom will we Watch at Westminster (WWW) in the Terrier Group?

CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot

The Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, has to be one of the most recognizable show dogs in recent history. A Google search of “Sadie, the Scottish Terrier” uncovered 375 news articles in the past week! Not 375 references in obscure show dog rags like this humble blog, but in the mainstream media like USA Today, the Boston Herald, and the New York Daily News. Sadie is, of course, 2009’s number one dog all breeds, winner of 111 career all breed Bests, and winner of the 2009 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, and, according to Las Vegas odds makers, the 1:8 favorite to win Westminster. Sadie was bred by Mary O’Neal & Anstamm Kennels (Miriam "Buffy" Stamm and Cindy Cooke), is owned by Amelia Musser, and handled by Gabriel Rangel.

CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice

Sadie has made only infrequent appearances in the show ring during 2010, but our current number one Terrier, the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, has been pillaging the show rings, garnering eight BIS so far this year, more than any other dog out there. Dodger and handler Amy Booth finished 2009 in the number five spot all breeds and are currently a breath behind the number one dog. Dodger was bred by William Dalling & Stacy Turner, and is owned by Sandra & Howard Hoffen and Phil & Amy Booth. Amy does most of the handling, but occasionally Phil steps in as he did in yesterday’s BIS performance in Indianapolis.

CH Dalriada’s Mystic

Scott Sommer, handler of last year’s Westminster winner, the Sussex Spaniel, CH Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee, will have several entries this year including the Wire Fox Terrier, CH Dalriada’s Mystic. Although Boo joined the fun late in 2009, she still managed five BIS, the only Wire Fox to win an all breed Best. Breeder Cara Campbell DVM co-owns Boo with Mike Doleski, Cecilia Ruggles & Beth Dowd.

CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman

The Skye Terrier, CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman, 2009 Westminster Breed winner and the only Skye to win a BIS in 2009 (He won seven), is currently the country’s number two Terrier and has just come off a very impressive weekend in Atlanta. Buddy was bred by Eugene Z Zaphiris & Matthew H Stander, is owned by Carolyn Koch & Victor Malzoni Jr, and handled by Lawrence W Cornelius.

Stay tuned for the Toys.

  1. I'm sure Dalriada's Mystic is a very nice bitch, but she didn't even go BOS at Montgomery. Her BIS's were in small shows without meaningful breed competition. Methinks you are getting caught up in hype, here!

  2. Tracy DeLoria's special, Eliza, has beaten Dalraida Mystic a number of times, including Montgomery (BOS to Boo;s AOM) and at their only head=to=head meeting in Atlanta last week. So why are you hyping Boo?

  3. And at how many shows large or small did any other Wire go BIS in the last year? And didn't Boo go Group One at two of the three Atlanta shows, the only Wire to get a Group placement in Atlanta? I do think it's a whole lot easier to predict who's going to get noticed in the Group than it is to predict who's going to win Breed. I expect a whole lot of surprises. It's the Garden. Thanks for another perspective.

  4. Don't get me wrong. going BIS is always wonderful. But who did the dog beat to get there? Some shows these days have 350-400 dogs total. Sure, Boo went BIS at Abilene. She beat precisely 29 terriers to get to the BIS ring, 500 dogs total. She had NO competition in the breed. No Scotties, no Schnauzers, no Airedales, no Cairns, no Lakelands, no Sealyhams, etc etc. etc.
So her handler went BIS at the Garden last year. Which end of the lead should we be looking at?

  5. The Wire Fox Terrier-Ch. Dalriada's Mystic "Boo" is a young bitch. She just turned three in January. She may not win the group this year but I'm sure she can in the future. So her BIS shows have been at smaller shows. That is a place to start.I have seen this dog in person at shows. She is a very nice bitch for her age.

  6. I have no vested interest in Boo, but she is one of the best Wires I've had my hands on in many years. She is still young, but she could be one of the top winning Wires of all time.

  7. Any word on Garden State winners?

  8. Well, I'm staying anonymous because I don't want to get stoned by all the "Boo" lovers. I never said she wasn't nice. Almost every dog at the Garden is very nice. Just that going BIS at 500-dog shows in West Texas just doesn't mean that much. She came in 3rd in her breed at Montgomery, for pete's sake!
