AFGHAN HOUND CLUB OF AMERICA

GCH CH Thaon’s Mowgli

The Afghan Hound is the breed that got me hooked on dog shows.  In 1968 I watched the Afghan Hound, CH Dahnwood Gabriel, handled by Michele Leathers Billings, win BIS at the Memphis Kennel Club show here in my hometown and I have been a dog show junkie ever since.

This past week more than 200 of the aristocratic dogs gathered in Atlanta for the 2012 National Specialty of the Afghan Hound Club of America.  Helen Winski Stein had the Best of Breed judging and she chose GCH CH Thaon’s Mowgli as her Best In Specialty Show.  Her Best of Opposite Sex was CH Jakar An Affair Most Wicked, her Winners Dog  was Regimes Thriller of Elmo and her Winners Bitch/Best of Winners was  Jama Winsong Heavenly Delight.

It was an unprecedented fourth national title in a row for Mowgli and breeder/owner/handler Jay Hafford.  Mowgli is currently the nation’s Number One Afghan Hound and Number Three Hound, all remarkable accomplishments done in limited showing,  Congratulations to Jay, co-breeder/owner James Blanchard and owner Ann Sterner.

While some of yesterday’s competitors left Fort Wayne IN for today’s Tennessee Valley Kennel Club show in Knoxville TN, most stayed for a shot at the 825 points available at today’s La Porte County Kennel Club show.  Once again, some of our top dogs failed to make it to Darryl Vice’s final.  Both the Number One Dog All Breeds, the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm, and the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, received second place ribbons in their respective groups.

CH Goldsand’s Columbus

At the end of the day, the seven facing judge Vice were the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Wynmoor Champagne Supernova, the Saluki, GCH CH Sandstorm’s Blue Nile Bubbles of Jatara, the Standard Schnauzer, GCH CH Blackhawk Finnegan's Wake, the Russell Terrier, CH Goldsands Columbus, the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, the Schipperke, GCH CH Dante Fire When Ready HOF, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Babheim’s Captain Crunch.

The RBIS went to the Russell, Bosse, and BIS went to the Springer, Peyton.  Peyton’s 51st BIS of the year puts him just about 1,000 points behind the Number One Dog.
