MONTGOMERY COUNTY KC PREVIEW

GCH CH Cragsmoor Goodtime Charlie

The Montgomery County Kennel Club show, the annual October all Terrier limited breed event outside of Philadelphia, is eclipsed in prestige only by the Westminster Kennel Club show.  We know more than one Terrier breeder who covet a win at Montgomery County more than a win at Westminster.  (We’re pretty certain that they would be thrilled to get either one.)  This year’s show features 1570 Terriers, a number 20 times that at the average all breed show.  Entries in Cairn Terriers, Scottish Terriers, West Highland White Terries, and Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers all exceed 100.

Unlike the past several years 2014’s race for Number One Terrier has been hotly contested with the Sky Terrier, GCH CH Cragsmoor Goodtime Charlie, leading the Welsh Terrier, GCH CH Shaireab’s Bayleigh Maid of  Honor, by just 152 points at the end of August.

The Number Three Terrier, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH McVan’s To Russia with Love, has been impressive the past few months, collecting all five of her BIS since May.   Two of those BIS were against the nation’s Number One Dog All Breeds. The Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Claircreek’s Impression de Matisse.  The Number Four Terrier, the Cairn Terrier, GCH CH Hjohoo's Save Hjour Love For Me, has two BIS this year and is the only Cairn to have won a BIS since 2011.

Two dog owned by the ubiquitous Brazilian, Victor Malzoni, could play spoiler.  The 23 month old Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Hampton Court Broxden What In Carnation, just picked up her first BIS this past weekend in Florida.  Debbie is the daughter of 2010’s Number One Dog All Breeds, GCH CH J'Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, and is handled by breeder/owner Amy Booth.

Also doing very well this past weekend was the Wire Fox Terrier, King Arthur Forliny Home.  King made his American debut this past weekend in Monroe MI where he won three straight groups and a Reserve Best In Show.  King brings an impressive resume to the US winning the Terrier Group at the Crufts this year and placing third at the FCI World Dog Show in June.  Victor also co-owns the aforementioned Skye, Charlie, and Cairn, Lexie.

However, this is Montgomery County, and, like Westminster, we advise you just enjoy the dogs and don’t bet your lunch money on the outcome.

BASENJI CLUB OF AMERICA

GCH CH Jasiri-Sukari Win Tin Tin

We have often written that the pinnacle of any breeder’s career is winning their breed’s national specialty. A few extraordinary individuals win more than one. Two such breeders are Kathy and Julie Jones, known throughout our sport as the “Basenji Sisters”. Among the many accolades they have garnered in their 30 plus years of breeding, was being named 2008 AKC Breeders of the Year for the Hound Group.

The sisters were at Purina Farms outside of St Louis this past week for the 2014 Basenji Club of America National Specialty with their three and half year old dog, GCH CH Jasiri-Sukari Win Tin Tin. They and Winston left with their third straight national BISS, an impressive feat made all the more impressive by Winston’s youth.

Dr Donald Sturz also recognized his Best of Opposite Sex, GCH CH Meisterhaus Happy Hour at Signet, his Winners Dog, Sirius Works for Me, and his Winners Bitch and Best of Winners, Laurel Frim Fram Only a Cockeyed Optimist. Congratulations to Kathy & Julie, Winston’s co-owner Chua Ming Kok, and all the other winners.
