THE GAME IS AFOOT!

 2009 AKC/Eukanunba National Champion
CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot

We promised to give you some expanded coverage of this weekend’s AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.  We apologize in advance if we don’t mention your favorite breed or dog, but we will try to cover as much as we can.  Be sure to visit the AKC’s terrific on line coverage of the event to find out all the details.

First let us tell you this.  The two day format has four Groups competing on Saturday, Sporting, Hounds Non-Sporting & Toys, with the Working, Terriers, Herding, & Best In Show reserved for Sunday.  With so many competing events around the US, there has been much speculation about which of our top ranked dogs would appear at AKC’s premier event.  We do know that 28 of the top fifty dogs in the country are entered.  However, several dogs are double, and even tripled entered.

We can tell you that two of our Top Ten are not entered, Number Four, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood, Styled Dream, and Number Five, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, both of who were in the final of yesterday’s Beaufort Kennel Club show in Savannah GA.  Also in Savannah yesterday, but entered in Long Beach, are Number Two, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, and Number Eight, last year’s Non-Sporting Group Winner, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Dawin Spitfire.

Four who have already been competing in Long Beach are Number One, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, Number Three, defending Sporting Group winner, the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed, Number Seven, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, and Number Nine, the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.  Our remaining two, Number Six, the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Ripsnorter’s Mt View Lookout, and Number Ten, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek, are entered, but we have been unable to verify that they are in Long Beach yet.

We will be posting tidbits all day, so check back with us frequently.

THE BIG WEEK IS HERE!

Long Beach Convention Center

We have just one day off this week before the fun starts again.  The big day approaches.  No, not Christmas, but the dog show equivalent, the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, this coming weekend, December 4th & 5th, in Long Beach CA.  At our doctors’ and family’s request we will be covering the event from our family room this year, but fear not, we will have several reporters on scene to give you all the details.

The main dance will be preceded by three days of merriment, starting Wednesday with the Kennel Club Of Beverly Hills, the Los Encinos Kennel Club, & the Long Beach Kennel Club all breed shows.  All of the events will take place at the massive Long Beach Convention Center.  There will be over 2300 Champions and Grand Champions representing the best of 167 breeds at Saturday and Sunday‘s main event.  Few venues rival the spectacle.

However, because of a quirk in the schedule, there will be rival events elsewhere in the US.  Down in Savannah GA, the Savannah Kennel Club & the Beaufort Kennel Club will team up for four shows starting Thursday.  While they will not match the Long Beach show in glitz or numbers, with almost 3700 dogs entered they will draw some big names.  Yuma AZ and the Yuma Kennel Club & the Imperial Valley Kennel Club will also host four days of canine competition starting Friday.

There will be standard Saturday/Sunday fare in Fitchburg MA with the Worcester County Kennel Club, in Kankakee IL, a hour south of Chicago, with the Kankakee River Valley Kennel Club, in Belleville IL, 20 miles east of St Louis, with the Edwardsville Illinois Kennel Club and in Conroe TX, 40 miles north of Houston, with the Conroe Kennel Club.

If you are anywhere near southern California, we encourage you to get to the Long Beach convention center this weekend for the one of a kind AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.  You won’t better quality purebred dogs anywhere in the world nor more variety in breeds anywhere in the US.  Be sure to check back with us frequently this week as we bring you results on the weekday events and frequent updates during the weekend.

GCH CH Blueberry Surely You Jest

The Springfield Kennel Club closed out the four day set in West Springfield MA today with Fred Ferris choosing the Best In Show.  His seven options were the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Cerise Tender Is The Night, the Longhaired Dachshund, Rosefarms Red Rum ML, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH Blueberry Surely You Jest, the Pekingese, GCH CH  PalaceGarden Malachy, the American Eskimo Dog, CH Nuuktok’s Atka inasmuch, and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.

Best was the Scottie, Henry.  It was his 35th Terrier Group First and second all breed BIS.  Henry, the nation’s Number One Scottie,  will be going home to owners John & Daphne Eggert soon after a show career that has kept him in the Top Five Scottish Terriers for four years, no mean feat in that breed.  Congratulations to Daphne & John, breeders Kathi Brown & Susan J Getgood, and handler Ernesto Lara.
