FOR OUR SERVICE MEMBERS

SPC Kelli Johnson & Friend

This morning we got this comment on our “Frequent Flyers” post  and decided to bring it to the top of the page to share with everyone.
Dear Mr. Wheeler,

If it weren't for your site, I would be left almost completely in the dark on the latest happenings in the beloved dog show world due to being deployed to Iraq. I can't thank you enough for your countless show by show posts and correlating pictures to give me the glimpse I would never get of the greats. I count down to the day when I can regain the ability to travel on my own terms to the dog shows of my choice, but until then, every update from you is GREATLY appreciated.

I have enjoyed seeing Amy and Dodger in person before, and I can see they make a beautiful team. I find it almost impossible to picture dog with a true disdain for the show world (and EVERYTHING that comes with it) making it to the top like they have, and all those before them. It is with this that I believe this dog loves what he does and who he does it with.

I wish people wouldn't take so much for granted. Getting to see more than the just the local specimens of the breeds we love is imperative to our sport's future. Not everyone can make it to their respective national every year, and it is with this that they surely look forward to the out of towners making a stop in their backyard. I know I have always loved seeing the "big ones" in life when our local shows arrived every year.

Good luck to all dogs, top and otherwise this year!!

With the utmost gratitude,
SPC Kelli Johnson, US ARMY
Kelli, it is you and your fellow service members that deserve my and all Americans’ gratitude.  My small contribution pales along side the dedication and courage you all show every day.  I am humbled that this blog is bringing a bit of our dog show world to your all too real world.  Now that I am retired it is all too easy to get immersed in our hobby and forget about what’s going on in the world.  I don’t think I have mentioned it here on the blog before, but my last position before I retired was with the Navy Personnel Command where I managed 13 programs for the Navy’s Family Service Centers.  During those five years I saw first hand the talent and selflessness of our Service Members.  So I thank you for your service.  I thank your parents for raising such a child.  When you get back stateside, I hope I meet you at one of our shows, so I can thank you in person.

DUTCH IMPORT WINS BIG IN BEAR DE

Banana Joe Van Tani Kazari

We have some partial results from Bear DE where several of the country’s top dogs watched the recent import from the Netherlands, the Affenpinscher, Banana Joe Van Tani Kazari, collect his first AKC all breed BIS at today’s Wilmington Kennel Club show.   Among the other finalists were the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, CH Fireside's Spontaneous Combustion, who had to get by the nation’s Number Two Dog All Breeds, the Irish Setter, CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed, in the Sporting Group to see Dr Elliot L More.   Also among the final seven, was the US’ Number Nine Dog All Breeds,  the Scottish Deerhound, CH Foxcliff Hickory Wind, AKC’s Number Three Dog All Breeds, the Boxer, Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Scottish Terrier, CH Blueberry’s Surely You Jest, the Schipperke, CH DeLamer Point Break, and the country's top Herding Dog, the Bearded Collie, CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.

Although Joe and handler Ernesto Lara enter the race a third through the season, we suspect that Joe will be a real contender.  He was the 2009 Number One Dog All Breeds in the Netherlands and is the top winning Affenpinscher in European history.   Congratulations to Ernesto, breeder/ owner Mieke Cooymans, and owner Zoila Truesdale.

HISTORIC WIN IN BEAUMONT TEXAS

CH Mad River Cool Breeze Blowing

TAKE TWO, THEY'RE SMALL

CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction & Handler Linda Pitts

The count was up today in Decatur IL, but there were still fewer than 500 dogs at the Sandemac Kennel Club show.  Once again there was formidable competition with the Black Cocker Spaniel, CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the American Foxhound, CH Kiarry's Foolish Pride, the Akita, CH Nakodo's Reign Of Glory, the Norwich Terrier, CH Skyscots Poker Chip, the Shi Tzu, CH Hallmark Jolei Austin Powers, the Lhasa Apso, CH My Thai Ta Sen Halleluiah Chorus, and the Old English Sheepdog, CH Lambluv Gambolon Blue Thunder.  It was the Cocker, Beckham, posting back2back wins.  We told you that Beckahm and handler Linda Pitts were intent on getting back into the top five, one BIS at a time.

ANOTHER LAKELAND BIS

CH Talydales Friend Of The Force

A bit off the beaten path, Lewisburg WV was the site for yesterday’s Beckley West Virginia Kennel Club show.  If you ever want evidence of the competitiveness of these small “boutique” shows, consider this Steve Hubbell’s final seven were the English Setter, CH Pemberly Fashion Police, the Greyhound, CH  GrandCru Clos Erasmus, the Siberian Husky, CH Amorok's Light Brigade At Kadian, the Lakeland Terrier, CH Talydales Friend Of The Force, the Pekingese, CH Palacegarden Malachy, the Schipperke, CH Aned's Le Rocher Noir, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Kridler's Nutmeg V Signature.   Further, the second & third spots in the Hound Group went to the Afghan Hound, Genesis Silverado, and the 15” Beagle, CH Torquay Midnight Confession, both top five Hounds.

We have several really nice Lakelands in the US, but it wasn’t until this past weekend that the first of them took home a big rosette.  Now we have a second, the Lakleand, CH Talydales Friend Of The Force.  our hearty congratulations to breeder/owner Sheri Smith and handler Michael R Kemp and thanks to the generous reader who shared the above photo.

FREQUENT FLYERS?

From time to time, we like to take advantage of our audience and pull out the soap box. We like to see our role as cheer leader in chief for our sport. We don’t see much to be gained by emphasizing the negative. We try to write so both the experienced exhibitor and the newby can enjoy the blog, maybe even the professional. However, the focus is the promotion of the sport of AKC conformation shows.

We have a laissez faire attitude toward comments on the blog. For the most part, we let our readers express themselves without interference. However, one recent thread threatens to spin out of control and distract from our basic purpose. Regarding the practice of flying dogs from one area to another seeking the most advantageous show environment, we have these observations:
  • It is far less frequent than one might think, You may not drive 800 miles in one day to compete, but many of our professionals and serious exhibitors do. If a dog gets on a plane five times in 200 shows, we don’t see that as extraordinary. The fact of the matter is we see far less frequent flyers this season than in the past decade. Not surprising, given the difficulty in flying these days.
  • Thank goodness that the owners of our top dogs do campaign them across the country. Those of us who do not live along I-95 or I-5 might never get to see our top 25 otherwise. Despite the fact that we encourage our readers every week to get out to a show, too few do. We will even get on a plane from time to time to go to where the good ones are just so we can tell our friends, “We saw that one in the flesh. She’s beautiful.“
  • People with money have an advantage. No kidding? Worse yet, they also have great dogs, perfectly presented by talented people. Despite the fact that we are 5’8”, when we were younger we played basketball. We never thought we would one day play for the Boston Celtics, but we loved the game. We don’t care if our dog wins at a show, just that we get to show our fellow exhibitors the best we had.
  • Do we think the ranking system needs to be overhauled? Yep. That’s why we created our own. We would love it if AKC would develop a system that encourage more participation.?Sure. Maybe a limit on shows counted or regional titles? But until then, we can’t be critical of the exhibitors that play the game well under the current rules.
Finally, our host, Google, lists comments posted by non-Google members as anonymous. We encourage those people to include their names within the comment. We think it’s just good manners.

CH Skyscots Poker Chip

Sunday, James Reynold would see the same seven, but would be charmed by the Norwich, Pokey, awarding him his 15th career BIS, his fifth this year. Have you noticed that three dogs are in a dead heat for the Number Three Terrier (based on all breed points)?
