FINAL SHOW OF THE YEAR

GCH CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber

The 2010 race to Number One Dog All Breeds came down to the wire at the San Mateo Kennel Club Show.  Rick Gschwender gathered the final final seven  in San Mateo CA.   They included the Norwegian Elkhound, GCH CH Vin-Melca’s Voyager, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, and the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber.  We will bring you the full lineup shortly.

Best went to the Bouvier, Webber, one of our original DOGS2WATCH.  Webber and handler Larry Fenner have collected eight BIS this year.    We have heard that Larry  Fenner will be leaving the professional handling ranks to take another job.  It's a big loss to the show ring.  Hopefully we will still see Larry frequently.  We find it fitting that he should cap his handling career with a BIS over the toughest competition AKC has to offer.

The win decides the National Title of Number One Dog All Breeds of 2010.  Congratulations to the little engine who could, the winningest Smooth Fox Terrier in history, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice!

SAN MATEO DAY THREE

The Kennel Club of Salinas is the third of our Final Four shows of the year as we hurtle toward a decision on who will be 2010’s Top Dog.  Today’s BIS was called by Carl Gomes who had his pick of the Sussex Spaniel, GCH CH Seamist On A Windward Tack RN, yesterday’s BIS, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Aviators Luck Be A Lady, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the Bulldog, GCH CH Bodhi's Light, Life, And Love, and the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber.

He chose the Whippet, Chanel.  Cha Cha and handler Lori Wilson have repeatedly shown they can can hang with the big boys, showing in every venue in the US and winning several of the marquee events in the US.  Chanel now makes tomorrow’s San Mateo Kennel Club show a must see for us all.

Our count down to the New Year continued today in San Mateo CA with the Santa Cruz Kennel Club’s show.  It was judge Robert Frost’s turn to gather the seven best of the day.  They were the German Shorthaired Pointer, GCH CH Robin Crest Great Expectations, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Aviator’s Luck Be A Lady, the Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH CH Trozian Onyx At Torum, yesterday’s BIS, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the Bulldog, GCH CH Globe And Anchor Sgt Iron Mike, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Kaleef's Lasting Impression.

His BIS was the Whippet, Chanel.  Chanel and handler Lori Wilson have had a habit of winning big shows since they hit the scene at Palm Springs last January.   Chanel and Lori have locked down the Number One Hound title for the year and are currently the Number Seven Dog All Breeds.  Who will be the Number One Dog All Breeds?  That is still up for grabs wuth only two shows to go.  Check with us tomorrow to see who sits where.

SAN MATEO DAY ONE

GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy

Many of the nation’s airports have been closed due to a holiday week blizzard.  One that is operating is the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), which is actually south of the fabled City by the Bay.  Just a few minutes south of SFO is the town of San Mateo, site of the only AKC dog shows remaining this year.  The four day set often draws dogs from all over the US.  This year the quartet of shows will determine who is the Number One Dog All Breeds for 2010.

The Oakland Kennel Club opened the Final Four and had Jeffrey Pepper in their final ring with the German Shorthaired  Pointer, GCH CH Robin Crest Great Expectations, the Norwegian Elkhound, GCH CH Vin-Melca’s Voyager, the Mastiff, CH Lexington Divine’s Put Me In, Coach, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Vigilante Justice, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the Bulldog, GCH CH Globe And Anchor Sgt Iron Mike, and the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber,

Round One went to the nation’s Number Two Dog all Breeds, the Peke, Malachy.  We don’t have exact numbers yet, but we do know that the win was not enough to take over the Number One position.  However, this is the first of four.  There are three days of excitement yet to go.

NEW YEAR'S EVE IN SAN MATEO

As you may know by now there are no shows this coming weekend, but we do have four pivotal shows scheduled for the last week of the year.  San Mateo CA just south of San Francisco will be the site for the Oakland Kennel Club, the Santa Cruz Kennel Club,  the Kennel Club Of Salinas, & San Mateo Kennel Club’s equivalent of the Iowa Caucuses, four shows that have come to represent the last chance to grab an advantage in the national rankings.  The fun begins on Tuesday, the 28th and continues through New Year’s Eve.

Here’s our chart to let you know where everyone stands going into the Holidays.  You will note that the excitement isn’t just about who’s going to be Number One.  The bottom six dogs are all racing for a higher finish.   We will be here to pop the bubbly and tell you who finishes the year as Number One Dog All Breeds.

JACKSON MS MOP UP

GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction

Jackson MS is only three hours from us, but we had difficulty getting much news from there these past four days.  We remind you that we did tell you that the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy, and the 15“ Beagle, GCH CH Torquay Midnight Confession, were the BIS winners on Thursday, Friday, & Saturday.   You can check our archives for a complete write up of Saturday’s Brandon Kennel Club Of Mississippi show.

Joining the Cocker, Beckham, in Dana Cline’s final for the Mississippi State Kennel Club day one show on Thursday were the above named Beagle, the Boxer, GCH CH Windfall I Dream Of Style, the Australian Terrier, CH Merrigangs Wild N Crazy Guy, the Pug, GCH CH T-Stars Spindletop, the previously mentioned Bichon, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Kridlers Nutmeg V Signature.

There were also four shows in the Chicago area this past week, but you had to visit two different sites to see them all.  The weekend started in Wheaton IL on Thursday.  Check our archives for reports on the Starved Rock Kennel Club’s two shows.   Exhibitors broke camp Friday evening and caravanned over to Rosemont IL a weekend with Skokie Valley Kennel Club.

The numbers were higher in Cleveland, but the temperatures were higher in Orlando FL where the Brevard Kennel Club closed the four day weekend with Joe Tacker choosing the Best In Show.  His options were the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Star K's Mile Hi Valentine, the Afghan Hound, CH Richlyn's Mean Joe Green Of Salix, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Skye Terrier, CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman, the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Dacun Kaylen's He's A Heartbreaker, and the Australian Shepherd, GCH CH Equinox Ad Astra.

Best was the GWP, Tina.   Tina has been one of the most consistent winners out there collecting 44 Sporting Group firsts and three all breed BIS this year.  Congratulations to breeders/owners Richard & Linda Stark, owner Victor Malzoni Jr, and handler Jane Myers.

ALLENTOWN PA

GCH CH Fireside’s Spontaneous Combustion

Our Monday morning mop up feels like the morning after the end of the play offs.  This past four days have seen some of the most anticipated match ups all year.  While we have focused much of our attention on Cleveland and it’s four shows there were lots of drama elsewhere.

In Allentown PA the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club and the Delaware Water Gap Kennel Club gathered over 3000 dogs for two days of fierce competition.  On Saturday the LVKC asked Dr Michael Manning to choose a BIS from the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, GCH CH Fireside’s Spontaneous Combustion, the Scottish Deerhound, GCH cH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, the Bernese Mountain Dog, GCH CH Adesa The Heat Is On, the Cairn Terrier, GCH CH Maverston Double Dutch, the Maltese, GCH CH Ta-Jon’s  Just Bee-ing Silly, the Schipperke, CH DeLamer Point Break, and the Rough Collie, CH Milas Latin Lover.

He chose the WPG, Buster.  Buster and handler Michelle Scott have been  working their way up the rankings lately and are now the Number 14 Dog All Breeds with eleven BIS.

GCH CH PalaceGarden Malchy

As we reported here yesterday, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malchy, spent Sunday in Allentown picking up the Best In Show at the DWGKC’s event.  Challenging Malachy in Jacqueline Stacy’s final were the Weimaraner, CH Northwoods Send Money Honey, the above named Deerhound, the Bernese Mountain Dog, CH Liebenhund’s Who’s Your Daddy, the American Staffordshire Terrier, CH Castle Rock’s Sbigstaff Mad About You, the Standard Poodle, Apacchi Jungle Fever, and the aforementioned Collie.  While we can’t be sure of the exact number of points that Malchy now trails the Number One Dog, we calculate that he will need to pickup around 1400 points to catch the leader.  We suspect there is a plane ticket to San Francisco in Malachy’s Christmas Stocking.

CENTRAL FLORIDA KC SATURDAY

GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy

Those of you who have followed this blog since the beginning know that it got started as a result of the exciting competition for the National title in 2008.  That year it came down to the last week of the year between the beautiful Giant Schnauzer, CH Galilee's Pure Of Spirit, and the magnificent Pointer, CH Cookieland Seasyde Hollyberry.  The lead changed hands a couple of times during the latter part of the year, but it was the Giant Schnauzer, Spirit, who prevailed by the slim margin of 755 points, a 0.64 percent difference.  However, the Pointer had 25 more BIS than the Giant.  So which was the best show dog of 2008?  We can’t tell you.  We do know that show after show they thrilled and excited us and made us happy to be part of this sport.

We reported earlier that on Saturday the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malchy was Peter Baynes’ BIS at the day one show of the Central Florida Kennel Club.  Joining Malchy and owner/handler  David Fitzpatrick were the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Star K’s Mile Hi Valentine, the Greyhound, GCH CH GrandCru Clos Erasmus, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Skye Terrier, CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman, the Bulldog, GCH CH Bully Hills James Dean, and the Australian Shepherd, GCH CH Equinox, Ad Astra.

We have heard that Malachy and owner/handler David Fitzpatrick have taken another BIS today in Allentown PA at the Delaware Water Gap Kennel Club show.  The win will bring them within 1300 points of the Number One title.   Who will end up Number One?  We will be the first to tell you.

WESTERN RESERVE KENNEL CLUB

GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice

Roger Gifford closed the four day weekend in Cleveland OH today, calling the BIS for the Western Reserve Kennel  Club.  His options were the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Rottweiler, GCH CH Cammcastle’s Friar Tuck, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, the Pekingese, GCH CH Pequest One Moment In Time, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Dawin Spitfire, and the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Quiche’s Glamour Girl.

It was the Smooth Fox Terrier, Dodger, grabbing the BACK2BACK BIS and 2143 points.  This will send our Top Two Dogs down to the wire.  There are only four shows left in the US this year.  Read all about them here.

JACKSON MISISSIPPI

GCH CH Torquay Midnight Confession

We haven’t heard much from Jackson MS where the  Mississippi State Kennel Club and the  Brandon Kennel Club Of Mississippi set up Thursday for a four day Southern good time.  However, we awake this morning to the news that the 15” Beagle, GCH CH Torquay Midnight Confession, was Leslie Rogers’ BIS at the BKCM’s day one show.
Joining Lola and breeder/owner/handler Marcelo Chagas were the winner of the MSKC day one show, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the Boxer, CH Sapphires Violet Sky In Vegas Of Streamline, the Australian Terrier, CH Merrigangs Wild N Crazy Guy, the Italian Greyhound: GCH CH Bo-Betts Open Button, winner of Friday’s MSKC event, the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Kridler's Nutmeg V Signature. .

The win brings Lola within one show of the all time record for the variety.   We will have photos of all the BIS winners when we get the rest of the results from Jackson.

RANKINGS LEAP FROG

GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice

Our Top Two Dogs continue to raise the stakes in this year’s rankings race.  Today in Cleveland OH, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, took back the Number One Dog All Breeds title, winning BIS at the Richland County Kennel Club show.

Dodger and owner handler Amy Booth were challenged in Beth Speich’s final by the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Alaskan Malamute, GCH CH Catanya’s Latin Lover, yesterday’s BIS, the Toy Poodle, GCH CH Smash Jp Moon Walk, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Dawin Spitfire and the Old English Sheepdog, GCH CH Lambluv’s Gambolon Bl;ue Thunder.

We also hear that the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy,  was Peter Baynes’ Best In Show at today’s Central Florida Kennel Club show.  The win will keep the race exceeding close with the Smooth Fox, Dodger,  somewhere around 500 to 600 points ahead of the Peke, Malachy,  at this point.  We hope tp have exact point totals tomorrow.

All we can say we have been blessed this year with a great group of dogs.  Our congratulations to all the breeders, owners, and handlers who have given us such a thrill ride this season.

MEDINA KENNEL CLUB

STARVED ROCK KC DAY TWO

GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins

The Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins, was Dr Klaus Anselm’s BIS at today’s day two show of the Starved Rock Kennel Club in Wheaton IL.  Accompanying Roy and handler Cliff Steele were the Golden Retriever, GCH CH Shor'Line Jetoca High Seas Adventure RA JH,  the Afghan Hound, CH Wynsyr Shimara The Dark Knight, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Aviator’s Luck Be A Lady, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, GCH CH Mondrian VH Lamslag RE, the Parson Russell Terrier, GCH CH Thunder Hill Soul Journey, and the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction. It was the 47th career BIS for Roy, the most ever by a Beardie.

STARVED ROCK KC DAY ONE

GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy

We did tell you last night that the Number One Dog, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, was Toddie Clark’s BIS  at today’s Starved Rock Kennel Club show in Wheaton IL.   Now we can tell you that Malachy and owner/handler David Fitzpatrick were joined by the English Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Nonnies No Doubt, the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Wynsyr Shimara The Dark Knight, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Aviators Luck Be A Lady, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J'Cobe Broxden The Headliner, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset's Satisfaction, and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.

LORAIN COUNTY KENNEL CLUB

GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice

Of the 2131 dogs entered at today’s Lorain County Kennel Club eight were in our Top Ten Dogs All Breeds. The seven that made it to Mary Anne Brocious’ final were the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Doberman Pinscher, CH Rauschund's Aquila Marquis , the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, the Toy Poodle, GCH CH Smash Jp Moon Walk, the Boston Terrier, CH Annalee Told You So, and Old English Sheepdog, GCH CH Lambluv Gambolon Blue Thunder .

BIS was the nation’s Number Two Dog in the US, the Smooth Fox, Dodger.  Dodger’s 103rd career BIS might have put him back in the Number One position.  However, we hear that the Number One Dog, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, was Toddie Clark’s BIS  at today’s Starved Rock Kennel Club show in Wheaton IL.  Nonetheless, this win puts Dodger and owner/handler Amy Booth just a scant 300 points behind the Peke…and it’s only Thursday

IT'S A PHOTO FINISH!

We have received many requests to update our chart showing the relative position of our Top Ten Dogs All Breeds.  Though some may think there is too much emphasis in the dog game on records, rankings, and titles, you have to admit this has been a very exciting year.  Our Top Three Dogs are in a photo finish as we approach the finish line and the bottom half of the Top Ten is even tighter.

While we feel confident that dogs listed above will remain in the Top Ten, we wouldn’t bet the lunch money on where they will end up in the rankings.

IT'S HAPPENING IN CLEVELAND!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum
Cleveland OH

We are almost at the end of our show season and this coming weekend will be pivotal.  First there are only five locations where you can find a dog show and they are all east of the Mississippi.  Second, we will see some of the biggest point counts of the year this weekend.  The big draw will be four days starting Thursday in Cleveland OH where the Lorain County Kennel Club, the Medina Kennel Club, the Richland County Kennel Club, & the Western Reserve Kennel Club have attracted over 10,000 entries, enough to allow any of the Top Three Dogs All Breeds to claim the Number One spot.

A little further west In Illinois there will be five days of shows.  The Starved Rock Kennel Club will set up Thursday & Friday in Wheaton, the exhibitors will break camp and move 25 miles to Rosemont for three days with the Skokie Valley Kennel Club & Chicago Goldcoast Kennel Club.   Down our way there’s an opportunity for four gracious days of southern hospitality in Jackson MS with the Mississippi State Kennel Club and the Brandon Kennel Club Of Mississippi.

Once again, Floridians offer a respite from winter weather with three days in Orlando with the Space Coast Kennel Club Of Palm Bay, the Central Florida Kennel Club, & the Brevard Kennel Club.  Finally, if you can only spare two days out of the holiday season, try the Delaware Water Gap Kennel Club & Lehigh Valley Kennel Club two days in Allentown PA.

Once again we will be following all the action closely and this is the only place where you can find out where everyone is in the rankings.  It’s Reindeer and Ridgebacks all week long!

Our Number Two Dog, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, was in three different cities, picking up three BIS, all to keep the rankings race exciting for us dog show junkies.  We have been able to report on most of Dodger’s appearances, but we just now have Saturday’s results from the Chambersburg Area Kennel Club in Gettysburg PA.

Accompanying Dodger and owner/handler Amy Booth in John Simm’s final were the Curly-Coated Retriever, GCH CH Down Datrail Hunting Thrills, the 15” Beagle, GCH CH Torquay Midnight Confession, the Great Dane, GCH CH Lobato's Jitterbug Man, the Pug, GCH CH Ivanwold Holy Smoke, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH L'Paige Majick Sisters Of The Moon, and the Old English Sheepdog, GCH CH Whisperwood's Wild Horse.

THE RANKINGS RACE

One of the services we provide to the dog show community is an up to date ranking of our Top Ten Dogs.  Our numbers are based on ACK official results augmented by the reported counts from superintendents MBF and Onofrio (widely believed to be reliable) and our estimates from our own mathematical model, which has had a margin of error of less than 0.5 percent over the last three years. (which is way better than the average national polling organizations)

We have received several requests for the exact numbers we have in our rankings.  We have purposely not included the exact numbers because we don't want to quibble over a dozen points variance in a 30,000 total.  We provide the following chart with the warning that the numbers are ESTIMATES and published for our readers amusement.   So enjoy!
