LIMITED BREED 10, ALL BREED 34

Looking Down on Chatanooga TN
From Lookout Mountain

This week’s 34 all breed shows will be augmented by 10 limited breed shows.  The Dallas-Ft Worth Toy Dog Club  will do two stand alone limited breed shows in Dallas on Saturday & Sunday while the Carolina Terrier Association will do one show on Friday prior to the Moore County Kennel Club Of North Carolina’s two weekend shows in Pinehurst NC.  The Great Lakes Toy Club will do the same in Goodells MI prior to the St Clair Kennel Club’s  two show weekend.  The Beehive Toy Group Of Utah , the Group IV Terrier Club Of Salt Lake , & the Intermountain West Working Group Club will each host two shows, one each on Thursday & Friday, to set up the Wenatchee Kennel Club’s weekend duo in Farmington UT.

We do have a four day cluster in New England beginning tomorrow.  The South Shore Kennel Club & the Cape Cod Kennel Club will each do two shows in Falmouth MA. We also have four days done in in the endearing road trip style familiar to eastern dog fanciers.  First the Pocono Mountain Kennel Club will have a two day party in Gilbert PA Thursday & Friday, then everybody will pack up and motor on down to Macungie PA for the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club‘s Saturday gathering and the Berks County Kennel Club’s Sunday offering.

If you live near one of the Great Lakes take your pick of two from the Kennel Club Of Niagara Falls in Lockport NY, the afore mentioned Michigan shows, the Manitowoc County Kennel Club‘s duo in Manitowoc WI, or the Rochester Minnesota Kennel Club’s twofer in, where else, Rochester MN.  Mid America can opt for two in East Ridge TN with the Chatanooga Kennel Club, in Verona MS (OK it’s not exactly middle America, but it is in the middle of no where) with the Tupelo (MS) Kennel Club, in Lebanon IN with the Greater Lafayette Kennel Club or in Gray Summit MO with the Three Rivers Kennel Club Of Missouri.

Heading west you can enjoy an Indian summer in Chino Valley AZ, courtesy of the Prescott Arizona Kennel Club, a visit to the San Francisco Bay Area in Vallejo CA hosted by the Sir Francis Drake Kennel Club, or the magnificent Pacific Northwest in Wenatchee WA with the hometown Wenatchee Kennel Club.  Wherever you go, it will be a visit with beautiful purebred, AKC registered dogs, and that is a weekend well spent.

CH CILLEINE MASQUERADE DIES SUDDENLY

Our Favorite Photo of CH Cilleine Masquerade
And handler Paul Catterson

We returned home to find the disturbing news that one of our great show dogs has crossed the rainbow bridge.  The Number Five Dog All Breeds in 2008, the Brussels Griffon, CH Cilleine Masquerade, has passed away after a brief illness.  Lincoln was the winningest Griffon in history, collecting 70 all breed BIS titles.  Among his memorable wins were back2back BIS at the giant Evansville & Louisville KC shows, one of the three largest weekends of  2008, Group One at the 2008 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, and a Group One at the 2009 Westminster Kennel Club Show.  Bred by Denise Barney and owned by Mamie & Evelyn Gregory & Harlow & Anne Jahelka, Lincoln and handler Paul Catterson were one of the most engaging couples in the dog world.

After acting lethargic for a couple of days, Lincoln suffered a seizure and was taken to the University of Georgia, known for its superb  neurological staff.  After a week in ICU, the diagnosis was that he had contracted Encephalitis.  He immediately began a  steroid and chemotheraputic regimen. He returned home last Friday with the plan that he would receive chemo treatments on a regular basis at the University of Tennessee.  However, Monday he could not be wakened and  was rushed to his vet.  Despite the heoric efforts of his regular vet and the staff at the U of GA assisting by telephone, Lincoln passed away in Anne’s arms Monday afternoon, just one month shy of his sixth birthday.

The trophies on the shelf will start to tarnish and the photos will collect dust, but the memories of our beloved pets will live on forever.  Our thoughts are with Lincoln’s extended family and all who loved him.

We had fewer shows this week than the week before, but then we did fewer reports than we did the week before.  So we have a lot of catching up to do.  Whenever we have a lot of reports we try to do things methodically, so we don’t confuse ourselves.  It’s a senior thing.  So we will do this geographically going east to west.

We are still awaiting results from New Hampshire, so our first stop is North Branch NJ for Sunday’s Westchester County Kennel Club show.  It was the WCKC’s first show across the Hudson and while the venue is lovely, we do miss the old Lyndhurst Castle in the background.  Dr Tamas Jakkel’s super seven were the Irish Setter, GCH CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed, the Whippet, GCH CH Sporting Field's Bahama Sands, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH Blueberry's Surely You Jest, the Toy Poodle, GCH CH Smash Jp Moon Walk, the Standard Poodle, Hillwood Ale Kai Walking On Air, and Saturday’s BIS winner, the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins.  BIS went to the nation’s Number Four Dog all Breeds, the Boxer, Scarlett.  The Westchester show is not only one of the most prestigious stops on the calendar, it is one of the bigger ones.  We will have to wait for the final numbers before we can tell if Scarlett will move up in the rankings.  Now you know why handler Diego Fernando Garcia is grinning.
