NEW BIS WINNER

This week’s Santa Rosa shows have brought to our attention several dogs we had not previously seen. Today’s show was courtesy of the Mensona Kennel Club and featured Susan St John Brown as BIS judge.

CH Sherwood's King Arthur

Her finalists were the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, CH Flatbrook Royal Point Attitude JH, the Whippet, Starline Chanel, the Doberman Pinscher, CH Bruda The Artist Is Courbet, the Airedale Terrier, CH Sherwood's King Arthur, the Pug, CH Grapevines What About Bob?, the Standard Poodle, CH Pendragon Masaniello, and the Border Collie, CH Majestic Avatar Storm Warning PT.

Her Best In Show was one of those dogs who had been flying below our radar, the 21 month old Airedale, Arthur. This dog has only been specialed for a few months and already has several Group placements to his credit and now his first BIS. Arthur was bred by Pamela Macomber, Kenneth Cook, Lisa Bryan & Scott Bryan, is owned by the Bryans and handled by second generation handler Jenny Wornall. Congratulations to them all.

ANOTHER BACK2BACK BIS

CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot

We’ve been holding out for more details, but we can tell you that the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, has posted her second BIS of the weekend. That’s three top ten dogs that have posted back2back wins this week, all against formidable competition. Don’t you just love an AKC dog show?

BACK2BACK FOR DOG2WATCH

We told you how competitive the field was in Kansas City, but we haven’t talked about the entry in West Springfield MA. Today’s Newton Kennel Club saw a final seven that had to fight their way past tough group competition to get a chance to see BIS judge Myriam Vermeire.

CH Smash Jp Moon Walk

The Irish Setter, CH Shadagee Caught Red Handed left the nation’s number 15 dog all breeds and Thursday BIS winner, the Labrador Retriever, CH Casbar’s Hart to Hart, back in the Sporting Group, while the Irish Terrier, CH Fleet St Fenway Fan had to get past the country’s number 25 dog all breeds, the Sealyham Terrier, CH Efbe’s Merci Pour Le Poivre, in the Terrier Group. They were joined in the final ring by fellow top 25 dogs, the Toy Poodle, CH Smash Jp Moon Walk, the Bulldog, CH Kepley’s Showbiz Razzle Dazzle, and the Bearded Collie, CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins. Rounding out the final were the Scottish Deerhound, CH Gayleward’s Jaralv Nike, and the Rottweiler, Blackrocks Kazanova.

The Toy Poodle, Walker, one of our original DOGS2WATCH, picked up his second Best In Show of the weekend. Walker is the current number one Toy Dog in the US .

CJ TAKES ANOTHER IN KANSAS CITY

Let’s see, number two collects a BIS. Number one answers with a BIS. Then number two wins another BIS. So goes the back and forth between the country’s number one dog, the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, and the nation’s number two dog, the Doberman Pinscher, CH Allure Blazing Star Alisaton.

CH Allure Blazing Star Alisaton

Each has already collected a BIS this weekend. Now we hear that the Doberman, CJ, has added another today at the Leavenworth Kennel Club’s second show in Kansas City MO. We don’t have all the names of the other finalists, but we do know that top ten dogs, the Golden Retriever, CH Toasty’s Treasure Island, the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, and the Puli, CH Cordmaker Field Of Dreams were all there in W Everett Dean Jr‘s final ring.

This cluster promises lots of excitement this weekend.

IT'S SADIE IN ATLANTA

We’ve heard from the Sawnee Mountain Kennel Club Of Georgia who kicked off a three day weekend in Atlanta GA.

CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot

NOVOSTICKS BREEDING AID

This past weekend, an exhibitor was commiserating with us about showing a bitch. Our Cairn had come into season at the show and she advised us not to show a bitch too long without breeding her. She told us that she had shown a bitch to a national ranking, but never got a puppy out of her.

We promised that exhibitor and several others we would repost the piece we did in May on NOVOSTICKS, an easy to use aid that helps you determine the proper time to breed your bitch. A lot of us spend hundreds of hours researching pedigrees, make dozens of phone calls to stud dog owners, and put out a lot of money to get a bitch bred. If you have had breedings that did not take, you know the frustration.

So for those of you who missed the original post, go to NOVOSTICKS for information on the product and how to order.

MONDAY IN TOPEKA

For our non US readers, Jesse James was a notorious outlaw of America’s old wild, wild west. We think he would have appreciated yesterday’s lineup in Robert Vandiver’s final at the Jesse James Kennel Club show in Topeka KS. Five of the seven dogs had not made a final in the four previous days.

CH Pyrpressure L’Orgueil

Only the the Whippet, CH Starline’s Chanel, and the country’s number one dog, the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, had been in the earlier Topeka finals (You may remember that Sadie made all five finals and won three of the previous four shows). The five other hopefuls were the Golden Retriever, Claircrest Key Ingredient, the Great Pyrenees, CH Pyrpressure L’Orgueil, the Shih Tzu, CH Symarun’s Look N Good, the Bulldog, CH Dicky's Nostradamus, and the Bouvier des Flandres, CH Delux Think Tank At Runamok.

The Canadian Shih Tzu, who will turn two on Friday, picked up his first AKC BIS. Congratulations to breeders/owners Carol & Carrie Randle and handler Amanda Carlson.

COMING EVENTS

As summer winds down, we have dog folks looking for one last extended weekend of showing. This week five of the nine sites having shows will offer three or more events.

Springfield MA

Three of those five will offer four day stops. Fanciers in Region one can opt for four days starting Thursday in West Springfield MA with the Northwestern Connecticut Dog Club and the Elm City, Newtown, &Great Barrington Kennel Clubs or a traditional Saturday/Sunday weekend in Middleburg PA courtesy of the Mid Susquehanna Valley Kennel Clubs.

Kansas City MO

There are also four day outings beginning Thursday in Kansas City MO with the Leavenworth & Heart Of America Kennel Clubs and in Santa Rosa CA with the Lake County Kennel Club Of Northern California & the Mensona Kennel Club. There will be big numbers all three days in Atlanta at the shows hosted by the Sawnee Mountain Kennel Club Of Georgia, the Lawrenceville Kennel Club & the Conyers Kennel Club Of Georgia starting Friday. Expect quality, not quantity, in Chagrin Falls OH on the three days hosted by the Sugarbush & Western Reserve Kennel Clubs, also starting Friday.

Santa Rosa CA

More Saturday/Sunday offerings are to be had in St Charles IL with the Elgin Kennel Club and in Lake Elmo MN presented by the St Croix Valley Kennel Club. The Sammamish Kennel Club will hold only one all breed show in Redmond WA, on Sunday, but that will be preceded by two days of specialties and limited breed shows.

If you can make it to one or more of these shows, go. You won’t be disappointed. They are AKC shows with the best dogs in the world.

Region Five, the South Central Region, is where we reside and there were plenty of show options for us this weekend.

As we have written we were at the Memphis Kennel Club’s two days in Southaven MS, just a couple of miles down the street from Graceland where the Elvis faithful were marking the 32nd anniversary of the singer’s death.

CH Rivendell Applauds Janesa

Although there was not one white jumpsuit anywhere, there was a Hound Dog in Dorothy Martin’s final, the Afghan Hound, CH Genesis Silverado. There were also the English Springer Spaniel, CH Crossroad Crown Royal Miracle, the Great Pyrenees, CH Saddle Ridge Power Of Won, the Wire Fox Terrier, CH Tamedale Orinoco, the Pomeranian, CH Rivendell Applauds Janesa, the Boston Terrier, CH Charlies Man Oh Man, and the Shetland Sheepdog, CH Sunburst One Cool Dude.

West of us in Topeka KS, there a whole lot of shaking going on five shows that started on Sunday. We gave you Thursday’s complete line up and told you that the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, had won three of the four shows thus far. Here’s the rest of the story.

CH Devlons Fame And Fortune

On Friday, it was Tomas Gomez judging the final. CH Sno Klassic Play The Game

Saturday the same Cocker, Scottie, and Puli joined Glenda Dawkins and the Whippet, CH Starline Chanel, the Boxer, CH Bravo N Sunset Stelaing Time, the Pomeranian, CH Pufpride Somewhere In Time, and the Lhasa Apso, CH Rushmar’s Charmer. Sunday, it was the Cocker, Scottie, Puli, and Lhasa with Lorraine Bisso and the Whippet, CH Andauer Porsche Carrera, the Alaskan Malamute, CH Sno Klassic Play The Game, and the Italian Greyhound, CH Bo Bettt Buttons N Bows.

CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice

The west most stop in Region Five was Greeley CO where the hometown Greeley Kennel Club gave us two shows. Saturday’s BIS judge was Ann Hearn and her final group included the Golden Retriever, CH Toasty’s Treasure Island, the Wirehaired Dachshund, CH Gleneagle’s Who’s Famous Now, the Saint Bernard, CH Alta Vista’s billion Kilowatt CD, the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, the Pug, CH Loralar’s Bachelor Pad, the Dalmatian, TCJ N Satin Star Appeal, and the Old English Sheepdog, CH Bugaboo’s Georgie Girl.

The Smooth Fox, Dodger, picked up the big win, worth more than 2000 points. That should help him move up a spot or two in the top ten.

CH WillowWick Talltean

On Sunday, Dodger was back asking judge Judith Goodin for a second look as were the Doxie, the Dal, and OES. The three new comers were the Brittany, CH WillowWick Talltean, the Bernese Mountain Dog, CH Nashem’s He;s The Man Of Woodmoor, and the Affenpinscher, CH Tamrin Tug. It was the Brittany, Tally, who grabbed all the points on Sunday. This pretty girl had taken some maternity leave, but she is back and ready to challenge the boys. Congratulations to breeder/owner Catherine Fitzgerald and handler Kellie Martin.

REGION FOUR ACTION

We’ve worked our way over to Region Four, the North Central Region where there was all the doggy action anyone could want this weekend.

CH Ripsnorter's Mt.View Lookout

CH Blueridge Soma's Mel Gibson

We haven’t visited West Burlington IA yet this week. The Burlington Iowa Kennel Club held two shows there this weekend. The first on Saturday featured Charles Olvis in the final ring. Sunday, Carolyn Herbel saw the same Basset, Norwich, & GSD with the English Springer Spaniel, CH Tiffany Esspecial Imagery, the Rottweiler, CH Goldshield’s Giorgio Armani, the Affenpinscher, CH Iduna Oliver Twist, and the Tibetan Terrier, CH Cedar C’s & Barnstorm’s Ltd Edition. Her Best was the Basset, Timmy, the country’s top winning Basset Hound. Just barely two years old, we expect a whole lot more of this guy.

CH Skyscot's Poker Chip

Sissy is the number one Non-Sporting Dog based on group wins, but the Bulldog, Uli, is currently the number one Non-Sporting Dog based on dogs defeated. Whatever system you chose to recognize, they are both tops in our book.

WEEKEND REPORT, REGION ONE

We’re consuming our first Monday morning cup of coffee and musing over this weekends results. We’ve given you a lot of partial results, so we will go region by region and catch up as we go.

CH Shadagee Caught Red-Handed

In Region One, the Northeast Region. We had shows in Massachusetts and New York. It’s been a long time since we have seen a Bulldog bitch this good. Yesterday’s BIS is the latest in a remarkable string that has catapulted Uli into the number 14 all breed spot. As so many know, breaking into the top ten is not easy. We would not be surprised if Uli is there before the year is out.

TWO FOR TWO FOR CJ

CH Allure Blazin Star Alisaton

We have one more BIS to report. The Doberman Pinscher, CH Allure Blazin Star Alisaton, made it a clean sweep taking another BIS in Fitchburg MA at the Wachusett Kennel Club’s day two show. We have this photo to illustrate the definition of Intense in your doggy dictionary.

BIS COUNTDOWN

We have a trio of Best In Shows to report. And we shall count them down. THREE is the number of BIS won this week by the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, the latest coming today at the Manhattan Kansas Kennel Club show in Topeka KS.

CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber

TWO is the number of Bests won this weekend by the Irish Wolfhound, CH Dun Myrica Speaker Of Eagle, both courtesy of the Talbot Kennel Club in Easton MD. ONE more Best In Show gets credited to the Bouvier des Flandres, CH Avalon Frontier Sleepnlady Webber, who won today’s Olympic Kennel Club event in Enumclaw WA. Weren’t we just saying Bouviers hadn’t been scoring Bests lately? Now we have two this weekend.

COMING OUT & COMING IN

We were at Saturday’s Memphis Kennel Club show which was held just a few blocks across the state line in Southaven MS.

CH Bannochburn's Celtic Evensong
bred/owned/handled by Barbara Allen

After confining ourselves to armchair critic for the past few years, we got to take our 15 month old Cairn bitch, Shadowland’s Devil In Disguise, to her first show. Although we no longer sweat the small stuff like we used to, we got to re-experience some of those first show foibles. To begin with, we forgot to put our suit jacket in the car and were forced to show in our shirt sleeves. We also made a conscious decision to leave our girl, Dee Dee, looking a little too natural, further handicapping our chances. Finally, Dee Dee decided that her coming out was a good time for her coming into season. We had thought that that odd tail set and erratic ears were just signs of first show jitters.

In the end, we thought ourselves lucky that Dee Dee moved well around the ring, did not shy away from the judge, and did not attack her competition. The day was saved by our very kind and welcoming fellow Cairn exhibitors. Our thanks to Barbara Allen, Patrice Willis, Eva Miller, and Jane Biggerstaff for their hospitality.

CH Genesis Silverado

At the end of the day Marcia Feld got to see the English Cocker Spaniel, CH Especially Magic Happens, the Afghan Hound, CH Genesis Silverado, the Great Pyrenees, CH Saddle Ridge Power Of Won, the Wire Fox Terrier, CH Tamedale Orinoco , the Pekingese, CH Franshaw Hear Me Roar, the Bichon Frise, CH Risgae Miabella Sweet Georgia, and the Belgian Tervuren, CH Sanroyals Devils Delight.

BIS went to the English Cocker, a two year old bred by Yvonne Van Wyck and owned by Penny Harris, Si Moss, & Mindy Bartholomew. Congratulations to them all. Now, one of you send us a photo.

ENUMCLAW FINALISTS

We told you that the Standard Poodle, CH Brighton Lakeridge Summer In The Hamptons, went BIS at yesterday’s Olympic Kennel Club show in Enumclaw WA.

CH Paragon's Red Red Wine

Now we know that Stephen Hubbell also had the pleasure of the company of the Irish Water Spaniel, CH Poole's Ide Got Water, the Black & Tan Coonhound, CH Silver Ridge Showtyme At Windbourne, the Siberian Husky, CH Paragon's Red Red Wine, the Lakeland Terrier, Black Watch On The Rocks, the Papillon, CH Arkeno's Ears To You, and the Bouvier des Flandres, CH Avalon Frontier Sleepn Lady Webber.

The entry was huge by today’s standards, over 2400 dogs. We need a few more of those.

TWO MORE WINNERS

CH Brighton Lakeridge Summer In The Hamptons

Here’s a couple of BIS for you all. Number one, and determined to stay there, the Scottish Terrier, CH Roundton Mercedes Of Maryscot, picked up another Best at the Topeka (KS) Kennel Club show yesterday. Ri Lee`s Diamond Heirloom, and the Bouvier des Flandres, CH Quiche`s Demitrius.

Earlier this year we had a bunch of Bouviers logging BIS. However we haven’t heard from that breed of late. Perhaps Demitrius’ win yesterday will change all that. Congratulations on number four this year to breeder/owner/handler Elaine Paquette.
