CH Kenshai's And That The Way It Is
We have some partial results from today’s Flatirons Kennel Club show in Longmont CO. Norm Patton made it BACK2BACK BIS for the Pug, CH Kenshai's And That The Way It Is. Also among the finalists were the Brittany, CH Willowick Talltean, the 15" Beagle, CH Belcanto Flags A'Flyin, the Portuguese Water Dog, CH Spyglass's Legend of Bahai, the Welsh Terrier, CH Bayleigh Shaireab's Super Hero, the Boston Terrier, CH Gumbo-Kean's Cosmic Stargazer, and the Old English Sheepdog, CH Bugaboo’s Georgie Girl. All four of Walter’s BIS have come in the last two months. You may recall we told you that Walter is a half brother to 2008/2009 top ranked Pug, CH Tupelo Shoboat Tu China Tu and is backed by the Pug savy team of breeders Sheila Kessler & Patt Kolesar, and owners Sheila Kessler & Kent Meyer & owner/handler Doug Huffman. All that adds up to our newest DOG2WATCH.

It's the judges that should be watched, not the dog
ReplyDeleteAnother fine example of dog show abomination of politics! How many BIS did NP give to Mr Huffman with his previous dog? Over a dozen! If this is winning or a dog 2 watch isn't that admitting we appreciate this scandalous behavior within our fancy. This dog has ONLY performed at very small shows with little to no group competition.
ReplyDeleteIt's HANDLER2WATCH, not the Pug!!
ReplyDeleteWHY ALL THE ANGRY COMMENTS? PLEASE STATE YOUR NAME INSTEAD OF ANONYMOUS. MARY ALICE FORBES
ReplyDeleteWell MARY ALICE FORBES Did you ever think if this handler not only campaigns his dog advisedly (with the HANDLERS own gain in mind) ingenuously! What would stop that same individual from deleterious compromising the value of an author signing their name. The record speaks for itself another banal dog wins! Thanks to escamotage another tawdry win! Angry comments no just observations.
ReplyDeleteThis is NEPOTISM at its finest! Is this really a win to be proud of? Agree it is a handler to watch, the dog is only the means to the handlers ends.
ReplyDeleteOK, maybe I'm a little sensitive after recent events, but I will remind everyone that I brook no character assassination here. Anonymous comments making personal attacks will be rejected. Here's my position. Dog shows are the AKC's face to the public. Every exhibitor, judge, show committee member, etc, are ambassadors who should be representing our sport to the public. It seems lately that people are tired of being the "face of AKC" and would rather show their ass to the world.
ReplyDeleteMr Wheeler,
ReplyDeleteNo disrespect intended and understand you are here to moderate. Just please understand many people are discouraged and disenchanted with bias that exist at AKC events. Exhibitors pay a lot of money and find out they lost before they even arrived at the show. If the AKC wants exhibitors to be the "face of the AKC" then the AKC should desist actions that are iniquitous from continuing to exist. If the AKC are policing the shows/exhibitors/judges there should be no need for anyone to "show their ass." The AKC says they are losing money perhaps if they monitored debauched actions people would be inclined to stay or enter the world of AKC pure breed dogs.
Q.E.D.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I don't have my dictionary handy, so can't completely understand "anonymous'" rantings, but I get the idea. One of the first things I was taught when I started showing, was to keep notes on every judge I showed to. When someone is specialing a dog, of course they are going to seek out the judges who generally like their type of dogs. It's the same in every breed. Yes, the average breeder/owner/handler is at a disadvantage. That is the way it is - for all of us. Life's not fair, get over it.
ReplyDeleteWhat correlation is there between the size of the show and the quality of the dog? Does that mean I can never breed a quality dog because I have to go six hours just to find a major? Why is it such a big deal with this dog? His father has been Sire of the Year for the past two years. His half brother was #1 pug in the country last year. He even has relatives winning honors halfway across the world. Why shouldn't Walter win? He's a beautiful dog, being expertly handled. It sounds to me that whoever this anonymous coward is, he (or she) has a personal axe to grind. It is easy to slander someone if you don't sign your name. If I were to consider specialing one of my champions, I would not hesitate to contact Mr. Huffman.
Cindy White you are the breeder of one of these dogs correct. Enough said. Over a dozen BIS for one dog? Sire of the year is simply the dog bred the most, which in turn produces the most champions, not the quality of such animal. The size of the show and quality of competition surely does matter!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started showing my breed a very wise person told me that, the best dog doesn't always win. I didn't quite know what they meant, but I do now. I have seen this over and over and over again, that for a lot of judges it really isn't the dog that wins, it is who is on the other end of the lead. Is dog showing really a competion for the best dog in the ring at that moment and time or is it about knowing the judge at that particular show. Don't understand why AKC is wondering why they aren't attracting new people to this sport. Maybe it is time for AKC to take a personal inventory of dog showing, they would get a clear answer to their question. It is about the Politics not the Dog.
ReplyDeleteWell Said Mr. Smith, AKC needs to take a long hard look at their judging policy and institute some well needed changes.....
ReplyDeleteAgree with Mr Smith the AKC has policy and rules that are not very contemporary. Sad good people have been put off by the semantics of the dog shows
ReplyDeleteMs White is listed as the co-owner of the sire as per AKC registration! FIGURES
ReplyDeleteVery sad that cheap wins make good dogs look bad.
ReplyDeleteThis is addressed to the 3 or 4 people who still care about this comment thread, I am Sheila Kessler, one of Walter's (Ch Kenshei And That's The Way It Is)owners and breeder. So, I am upfront about my bias.
ReplyDeleteIs Walter as good a dog as I think he is? Maybe not, but he is most certainly not as bad as Anonymous believes him to be. Walter's dam was a very nice Champion bred by Emily Thiel and Bert Porter, both of whom have been breeding lovely dogs for many years. I thank all who made my ownership of her a possibility. Walter's sire, Julian, came from a long line of people who have bred wonderful pugs for many years, Patt and Ray Kolesar, Kay Sisson, Jill Hagan and Susan Koehler to name a few.
I have only been involved with purebred dogs for seven years and Walter is from the first litter I ever bred. He is the first dog I owned from puppyhood to a Championship. I finished him at 11 months at a show where he won three majors and breed over specials. As a breeder, owner, handler, I showed him to two group placements and, he won't even turn 2 years old until the end of July. I am ever so grateful that Mr. Huffman saw the potential in my little guy and purchased an ownership interest in him and is willing to show him.
We understand and recognize that there are issues within the fancy that cause people concern, have discussed this and plan on taking appropriate steps during Walter's campaign to avoid the appearance of conflict when there is an actual confilict present, but it is unreasonable to expect that Mr. Huffman, who has been, showing, breeding and handling pugs for over 40 years not to know most of the judges he shows to.
I haven't done anything to Anonymous that makes me deserving of the rath that has been expressed here. In fact, I am probably more of the little guy that Anon is railing to support. So, I politely request that if you have an issue with the AKC, take it up with them. If you don't like Walter, you are entitled to that opinion, but don't mix up a problem you have with the AKC with my little dog.
And, please, let me enjoy, at least for a little while, my good fortune. I promise, when you win against him in the ring, I won't rain on your parade either. In fact, I will applaud your dog as I have every dog that has competed against Walter whether Walter has won or lost.
This is the last comment I will make regarding this, so Anon, you will most likely have the last say. I please ask anyone who considers themselves my friend to refrain from further comment. Thank you all for your support.
I BELIEVE IN SHOWING MY PUG TO THE EXHIBITORS AND BREEDERS OUTSIDE OF THE RING UNLESS THE JUDGE IS A BREEDER AND HAS BEEN THROUGH ALL THE LESSON US BREEDER OWNER HANDLERS HA E HAD THEN HE OR SHE IS JUST A BEGINNER SO TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE SHOW HAVE FUN AND SHOW TO THE GALERY IF THEY KNOW YOUR DOG AND YOU LIKE YOUR DOG AND YOU HAD A FUN DAY THEN LEAVE TI BE THAT WAY IT IS A SPORT NOT A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH
