We have a bit of an unusual Best In Show to tell you about. Today at the Bald Eagle Kennel Club Of Williamsport Pa show Nancy Dinkfelt‘s top dog was the ASCOB Cocker Spaniel, CH Shaman's No Doubt About It. So what’s unusual about that? Well, we are told that it is exceedingly rare for a brown Cocker to win an all breed BIS. Although this is Luke’s first all breed win this year, he leads all three varieties in breed points. He was handled to the win by Jessica Brickett for breeders Joann Stamm & Jim Fehring. Congratulations to them all and a special congratulations to Jim who completed his very first AKC judging assignment today at the Sturgis Kennel Club in Fort Wayne IN.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

At the very heart of our sport is the breeder. Everything you see in the show ring depends on the breeder. While we all appreciate the wins in the show ring, breeders are more interested in what they see in the whelping box. That’s why breeders Helen Witt, Claire Wisch, & Kelly Wish are so proud of German Wirehaired Pointer, CH Ripsnorter’s Mt View Lookout (Scout). This is what we call keeping in the family.

Scout, who is owned by Kiki Courtelis, Joyce Wilkinson, & Helen & Jim Witt, was in Whittington IL with handler Frank Murphy this past weekend for the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America’s National Specialty, Sweepstakes, and Futurity. Judge Joan Lester’s Best In Sweepstakes was Scout’s daughter, Drakkar’s N RLB Eye’Ma Lookout, bred by Rodger Bultman, Terrence Boldin & Joyce Wilkinson and owned by Helen Witt. Judge Brian Meyer’s Best Of Futurity was another Scout daughter, Drakkar’N RLB’s Eyefull, bred by the same trio and owned by Joyce Wilkinson, Rolanda Pote & Rodger Bultman.

Sunday, it was Scout's turn to accept the BISS from Thomas Bradley III , who did the regular classes. Winner’s Bitch was the BOF winning Scout daughter and Winner’s Dog & Best of Winners, was the Scout son, Drakkar’N RLB’s Celtic Private Eye, once again bred by Rodger Bultman, Terrence Boldin & Joyce Wilkinson and owned by J Boyd, M Boyd, & Joyce Wilkinson, H George. Best of Opposite Sex was CH Ebbtide’s From The Ashes, bred by Garnett Persinger who co-owns with Barbara Plasse, Patricia Roberts & Timothy Bosley.

Our congratulations to all the winners. We worked very hard to get everyone’s name. Please let us know if we left any breeder, owner, or handler out.

GO TO YOUR LOCAL AKC SHOW

Believe it or not our dog show weekend starts tomorrow with the first of five all breed shows in Fort Wayne IN. The Northeastern Indiana Kennel Club will open and close the stay, with shows hosted by the La Porte County, Sturgis, & Marion Kennel Clubs in between.

Cape Henry Lighthouse Virginia Beach

There are also four day clusters starting Thursday in Virginia Beach courtesy of the Middle Peninsula Kennel Club Of Virginia & the Virginia Beach Kennel Club and in Amarillo TX offered by the Panhandle Kennel Club Of Texas & the Clovis Portales Kennel Club. The Bald Eagle Kennel Club Of Williamsport, PA & the Back Mountain Kennel Club will team up for three shows in Bloomsburg PA beginning Friday.

Boca Raton Harbor

Standard Saturday and Sunday fare is available from the Tennessee Valley Kennel Club in Knoxville TN, from the Tri-state & Bartlesville Kennel Clubs in Joplin MO, and from the San Gabriel Valley & Antelope Valley Kennel Clubs in Pomona CA. Finally, the Boca Raton (FL) Dog Club will give us one show on Sunday in that fabled resort town.

We have heard much lately about how our dogs shows are getting smaller. We assure you that you will see lovely specimens at any AKC show. You can reverse the trend. Be an ambassador to our sport. Take your kids and let them see how much fun this sport is. Take a neighbor and introduce them to one of our rare breeds. Write to your elected official and tell them you expect to see them at an your next AKC event. It’s your sport. It’s up to you to save it.

We don’t know why the good ones always peak in the last quarter of the year, but they do. Look for the number three dog all breeds to be in contention at every big show through out the remainder of 2009.

VANCOUVER KENNEL CLUB

We will now take you to the west coast where we had three big shows. The first is the Vancouver Kennel Club show in Ridgefield WA.
