The clusters are back! Our show weeks begins tomorrow when the Union County Kennel Club will open the five show Atlantic Ocean Classic in Wildwood NJ. The Boardwalk Kennel Club & the Sand And Sea Kennel Club will follow with two shows each. Atlanta GA will join the fun on Thursday with the Cherokee Rose Cluster, a four show funfest hosted by the Griffin Georgia Kennel Club, the Sawnee Mountain Kennel Club Of Georgia, the Conyers Kennel Club Of Georgia, & the Lawrenceville Kennel Club.

Out west the Sporting Dog Association Of Arizona limited breed shows kicks off the Heart of the Desert Classic’s five day visit in Phoenix AZ. The Sporting dogs will join the other six groups for the four all breed shows hosted by the Sahuaro State Kennel Club & the Lost Dutchman Kennel Club.

Our remaining shows are of the traditional two day weekend form. In New England look for the Great Barrington Kennel Club in West Springfield MA, in the Heartland it’s the St Joseph MO hometown Kennel Club, just next door it’s the Southeast Arkansas Kennel Club in Pine Bluff AR, in the Land of Enchantment it’s the hometown Hobbs New Mexico Kennel Club, & in the Golden State it’s the Sun Maid Kennel Club of Fresno (CA).

For many of us It will be the last chance to see most of the dogs heading to New York for the Westminster Kennel Club show. Get out this weekend and see what makes AKC one of the best family outings available.

Joining Owen in the final ring were the Irish Setter, CH Willowbrook at Harvard, the Whippet, CH Karasar’s Rememberence, the Tibetan Mastiff, GCH CH Dreamcatcher Major Victory of Loki, the Colored Bull Terrier, CH Magor The Minotaur from Stonebull, the Boston Terrier, CH Heavenly Sanglo’s Spamonte, and the GCH CH Quiche’s Intrepid Captain Sully.It’s the first BIS for Owen. Congratulations to breeders/owners Xeralane Kennels.

Sunday the Alaska Kennel Club took over and Carl Anderson chose his Best of the above named Whippet, TM, Shih Tzu, & Bouvier, the Brittany, Copley’s Last Call Martini, the American Staffordshire Terrier, LBK’s Hot Pursuit, and the Lhasa Apso, Xeralane’s Rock Around The Clock. He chose the Bouvier, Sully as his Best.

Another first timer, three year old Sully was bred by Louise Paquette and is owned by Stephen Bowerman & Emmy Leah Raye Herring. Congratulations to them all.

We’ve saved this one for you. The Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, swept all three shows in Grayslake IL this weekend.

On Friday London was the choice of Brian Meyer who might have chosen the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Wynmoor Champagne Supernova, the Basset Hound , GCH CH Topsfield-Sanchu Eenie Meenie Miney Moe, the Standard Schnauzer, GCH CH Pepper Tree Zorro V. Morgenwald, the Wire Fox Terrier, CH Gordon's Bite Of The Apple, the Shih Tzu, GCH CH Hallmark Jolei Austin Powers, or the Shetland Sheepdog, GCH CH Grandgables The Frat Boy, but he didn’t.

Saturday the aforementioned Springer, Basset Hound, Shih Tzu, the Bullmastiff GCH CH Newscastle's Picturesque Picasso, the Border Terrier, GCH CH Meadowlake Simply Sinful, , and the Rough Collie, GCH Wyndlair Cherokee Vindication all plead their case with Kent Delaney to no avail.

Sunday, Jay Richardson made it unanimous, choosing London over the above named Springer, Schnauzer, Border Terrier, Chin, & Sheltie and the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Thaon’s Wallstreet & the Japanese Chin, GCH CH Pem Wy-Syng Lucky Mi . London will enter Madison Square Garden next month on a roll with six BIS already this year.

Now that the on line catalogs for the Middle Peninsula Kennel Club Of Virginia’s two shows in Doswell VA have been liberated we can tell you about yesterday’s show. You may recall that a generous reader managed to get past the embargo and send us results on Saturday’s show.

On Sunday it was Jane Forsyth choosing her Best of the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, GCH CH Whirlaways Ida Belle's A Ringing, the Portuguese Water Dog, CH Magellan's I Want To Be Your Man, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH Lomondview Clementina, the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe v Tani Kazari, the Dalmatian, GCH CH Spotlight’s Ruffian, and the Old English Sheepdog, GCH CH Masquerade Mikey Likes It.

It was the Cocker, Beckham, picking up his second of the set. 2011’s Number One Dog All Breeds brings his “A” game with him into New York next month.

The St Charles Missouri Kennel Club was set up in Lake St Louis this weekend. You can read about the day one show here. On Sunday The seven that Diane Malenfant saw were the Golden Retriever, GCH CH My Buddy’s Boppity-Bop Blue Moon RN, the Whippet, GCH CH Sporting Fields Bahama Sands, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vidi Vici, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH McVan’s Be Bop Baby, the Pug, CH House Poory JP Yum-Yum Zerohour, the Keeshond, GCH CH Baronwood Infinity & Beyond, and Saturday’s BIS winner, the Border Collie, GCH CH Sporting Fields Heiress HSAs.

Sunday belonged to another Sporting Fields dog, the Whippet, Tawny. Tawny and handler Amada Giles are off to a very good start this year with three BIS and six Hound Groups. If you are at Westminster this year, do stop by Ring 2 at 11:15 on Monday, February 13th to see this beautiful bitch. If you can’t make it wait until Monday afternoon and check out the Westminster Kennel Club’s site and watch the video of the judging. You’ll be glad you did.

Best went to the Harrier, Chet. It’s the first of the year for Chet, who finished 2011 with five Bests In Show and 17 Hound Groups, including the Group at last month’s AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. Chet is one of our picks for this year’s Westminster Hound Group and we think he is a DOG2WATCH. We told you last night that Taffee McFadden and the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore, picked up the BIS t yesterday’s Orange Empire Dog Club in San Bernardino. This morning we can tell you that Taffee’s husband, Bill McFadden and the Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH CH Perrisblu Kennislain’s Chelsey, also collected a big rosette yesterday, at the day two show of the Golden Gate Kennel Club in San Francisco’s Cow Palace.

Joining Bill & Chelsey in Jeanette McGinnis’ final were the Weimaraner, GCH CH Silhouette’s LifeInTheFastLane, the 15” Beagle, CH Cabaret Come Chase The Dream, the Samoyed, GCH CH Rossia’s Denali Star, the Pekingese, GCH CH Windemere’s Dusting of White Pevyne, the Keeshond, GCH CH Summerwind‘s Rumor Has It, and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Coventry Allure at Wyndstar.

Mark Kennedy drew the first day title and chose his Best of the Pointer, CH Marjetta In The Limelight JH, the Norwegian Elkhound, CH Tioka’s American Ride, the Doberman Pinscher, CH Royal Future Jp Izanagi of Dabney, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Warfox High Mtn Sweetheart, the King Charles & Ruby English Toy Spaniel, CH Southdown Nevermind, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Hillwood Ale Kai Walking on Air, and the Australian Cattle Dog, CH Rick’s Smokin’ Thunder.

Best went to the Poodle, Fran. Fran & handler Dr Joseph Vergnetti had one BIS & five Non-Sporting Groups last year, in a breed that may be the toughest in AKC. Congratulations to Joe, and breeders/owners Ellen M Charles & Karen LaFrak.

WWW: THE HOUND GROUP

Our picks for Whom to Watch at Westminster in the Hound Group include two Hounds that set breed records in 2011 and two standouts at last month’s AKC/Eukanuba National Championship (AENC).

GCH CH Starline’s Chanel

Last year’s Number One Hound, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, is the winningest Whippet of all time with 69 all breed BIS, 35 of which came in 2011. She is also the winner of the 2010 WKC Hound Group. However, as we have written here, Chanel will have to get past last year’s Number Two Whippet, GCH CH Sporting Fields Bahama Sands, before she can contend for the Group win. Chanel was bred and is owned by Carey & Lori Lawrence and handled by Lori Wilson.

GCH CH Northgate’s AS You Like It

Another breed record holder is the Pharaoh Hound, GCH Northgate’s As You Like It, who finished last year as the Number Eight Dog All Breeds, just behind Chanel. Qing and handler Brian Livingston picked up 35 BIS in 2011, bringing Qing’s career total to 50. Qing was bred by Hanna Ukura, is owned by Jenny Hall & Annika Lundqvist-Hemstrom.

GCH CH Downhome Hi-Tech Innovator

We think that one of AKC’s rarest breeds, the Harrier, GCH CH Downhome Hi-Tech Innovator, may be among the final four. Chet is the son of the breed record holder, CH Downhome Family Tradition. Although Chet entered the race late in last season, he still managed five Bests In Show and 17 Hound Groups, most notably, the AENC Hound Group in December. Chet was bred by Susan Lowder, Ken and Miriam Nell, is owned by Carla & Joe Sanchez, and handled by Jorge & Suzie Olivera.

Rounding out our Hound choices is the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Thaon’s Mowgli. Last year breeder/owner/handler Jay Hafford led Mowgli to seven all breed BIS, 26 Hound Groups, BISS at the Afghan Hound Club of America’s 2011 National Specialty by, & Best Bred By Exhibitor In Show at the 2011 AENC. Mowgli is owned by Jay, co-breeder James P Blanchard, A Sterner, and D Rogers.

Things today in Alexandria LA at the Baton Rouge Kennel Club day two show looked remarkably like day one as the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy, took home his second consecutive BIS. Drummer’s rivals in Stephen Hubbell’s final were the Golden Retriever, GCH CH Summits Emery It's In The Bag, the Saluki, GCH DC Shahtani Ivory Moon SC, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall I Dream of Style, the Scottish Terrier, CH Kelwyn's History in the Making, the Chinese Crested, GCH CH Silvercreek's Friendship Is Golden, and the Australian Shepherd, GCH CH Harmony Hill’s Money Talks.

Drummer and handler Scott Sommer now have three BIS to add to their 2012 resume as they prepare for next month’s Westminster Kennel Club show.

We will start with the Sporting Group, always competitive and never mores so than this year. 2011’s Number One Dog All Breeds, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, goes into the big dance as the dog to beat. Beckham and handlers Michael & Linda Pitts collected 68 all breed BIS & 148 Sporting groups. Beckham was bred by Linda Moore who co-owns with Bruce Vandeman, Carolee Douglas, Mary Walker, & Cindy Cassidy.

Peyton finished the year as the lucky 13th dog in the all breed standings with 16 BIS & 71 Group Firsts, Team Peyton consists of breeders Billie, Erin, & Charlie Kerfoot & Ruth Kirby, owners Celie Florence, Beth Fink, Erin Kerfoot, PhD, Ken Goodhue-McWilliams, PhD, & Delores Strength, and handler Robin Novack.

Oakley and handler Phil Booth have added one more since then. Oakley was bred by Claire Wisch & Kelly Wisch, & Helen George and is owned by the Wisches.

The English Setter, GCH CH Oakley’s B’Dazzled, is Number Two on our just published first traditional Top Ten of 2012. Dazzle and handler Bruce Schultz picked up a big, big BIS in Palm Springs earlier this month, followed it with another in Puyalllup WA, and just completed a very successful stop in Portland OR. Dazzle was bred by Jim Jannard & Paula Dempsey, and owned by Donald & Georgejean Jensen & Erik & Jennifer StricklandNext up the Hound Group.

Rosedown Plantation Louisiana

Our show week begins tomorrow in Alexandria LA where the Baton Rouge Kennel Club & Alexandria Kennel Club will team up for four all breed shows, the only four show cluster in the country this week. The Chain O'lakes Kennel Club & the Park Shore Kennel Club will partner for three all breeds in Grayslake IL beginning Friday.

The Middle Peninsula Kennel Club Of Virginia will augment its two weekend shows in Doswell VA with the Potomac Hound Club’s & the Virginia Terrier Club’s limited breed shows on Friday. Out in San Bernardino CA the Tri-Valley Working Dog Club’s limited breed shows Of Pinon Hills will open on Friday & close on Monday for the Orange Empire Dog Club’s two all breed shows.

Everyone else will have to make do with the traditional two show weekend whether in Ladson SC with the Charleston Kennel Club, in Ocala FL with the Greater Gainesville Dog Fanciers Association, in Erie PA with the Erie Kennel Club, in Lake St Louis MO with the St Charles Missouri Kennel Club, in Daly City CA with the Golden Gate Kennel Club or in Anchorage AK with the Kenai Kennel Club & the Alaska Kennel Club.

That’s ten different venues offering you a chance to see this year’s crop of hopefuls. There’s no football this weekend. There’s no lawn to mow. You have no excuse. Get out to your local show and pick your favorite for next month's Westminster Kennel Club show.

On Saturday Yoshio Mori gathered the Welsh Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Clussexx Red Dragon, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, GCH CH Vyrtuous Command Performance, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Horizon's Evangeline, the Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH CH Torum The Spaniard, the Papillon, GCH CH Copella's Rising Attraction, the Chinese Shar-Pei, CH Jade East Do You Know The Way To San Jose, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Enchanted's American Thunder.

Bill Shelton had the daunting task of choosing a BIS at today’s Tualatin Kennel Club show, the closer for the big Rose City Classic weekend in Portland OR. He made his choice from the Clumber Spaniel, CH Clussexx Collaboration With Traddles, the Whippet, GCH CH Sporting Fields Bahama Sands, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vidi Vici, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks a Peek, the Yorkshire Terrier, GCH CH Pastyme’s Breaking and Entering, the Schipperke, GCH CH Dante’s Fire When Ready HOF, and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Aubrey’s Tails of Mystery.

Her Latin name translates as "I came, I saw, I conquered." and that’s exactly what the Doberman, FiFi did in Portland, taking three of the four giant shows, including today’s BIS. FiFi and breeder/owner/handler Mullin came into Portland with just over 100 points. They leave with over 7,000 points. We will wait until we can vrify this week's numbers before we post our first top Ten of 2012 this week. Look for FiFi to be Number One or Two.

The Florida Marathon ended today, with the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, emerging as a legitimate contender for the Number One Dog All Breeds. Classie picked up her third big BIS of the ten day set in Brooksville FL at today’s Pasco Florida Kennel Club show. Charles Cyopik chose Classie over the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Wynmoor champagne Supernova, the Irish Wolfhound, CH Dun Myrica Lyre of Eagle, the Samoyed, GCH CH McMagic’s Candied Ham of Pebbles’Run, the Skye Terrier, CH Of Skyeline Captain Hook, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Wolf creek Galaxy of Merivern.

Classie has collected 6300 points so far this year. We will have to await the numbers from this weekend’s Portland’s shows to know how close to Number One she is.

London was accompanied in Jerry Watson’s final by the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Wynmoor Champagne Supernova, the Harrier, CH Tallyho The Time of My Life, the Giant Schnauzer, GCH CH Skansen’s Holy Knight, the Miniature Schnauzer, GCH CH Allaruth Just Kidding v Sole Baye, the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, and the Puli, GCH CH Cordmaker Rumpus Bumpus.

No other dog has dominated the Florida Classic in Brooksville FL as has the 2011 AKC/National Championship. Handler Ann Rairigh and London now have that all important momentum going into next month’s Westminster Kennel Club show.

Portland OR isn’t the only place fanciers can partake in a four show weekend. The Livonia Kennel Club kicked off another four show set in Novi MI on Thursday. Barbara Dempsey Alderman’s select seven was a mix of last year’s Top Ten and this year’s Top Ten hopefuls, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casblanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the Afghan Hound, CH Mijkelh Sikanni Of Procyon, the Great Pyrenees, GCH CH Beren’s Hope Of Thorn Hill, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH Lomondview Clementina, the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe v Tani Kazari, the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Vogel flight’s “Honor” to Pillowtalk, and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Xtc’s What Can Brown Do For You?.

She chose last year’s Number Five Dog All Breeds, the Affenpinscher, Joey, as her Best In Show. It’s Joey’s second of 2012.

The Tualatin Kennel Club opened the big four days of all breed shows in Portland OR yesterday. Carl Gene Liepman got the first look at the inside of the BIS ring. His first day hopefuls were the German Shorthaired Pointer GCH CH Robin Crest Great Expectations, the Afghan Hound GCH CH Thaon’s Mowgli, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vidi Vici, the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH Steele Your heart, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, GCH CH Full Of Malarkey Miles Of Aisles, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore, and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Wigglesworth Thriller.

The Florida Marathon continued today in Brooksville FL with the second time around for the Inverness Florida Kennel Club. Victoria Jordan’s final seven featured the Weimaraner, GCH CH Northwoods send Money honey, the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Mahali Arriva Meadowlark, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Hollywoods Sex and the City, the Miniature Schnauzer, GCH CH Allaruth Just Kidding v Sole Baye, the Maltese, GCH CH Scylla Small Kraft Re-Lit, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Dacun Kaylen's He's A Heartbreaker, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Wolf Creek Galaxy of Merivern.

It was the Standard Poodle, Thomas, picking up his first BIS of the new year. Thomas and owner/handler Kay Peiser fought their way out of a large breed entry, which included the winner of two of the last two shows of the set. Before we get to today’s all breed action, let’s talk about yesterday’s big limited breed shows in Portland OR. The Mt Ranier Working Dog Club’s event drew more than 500 dogs. Bill Shelton’s Best In Show was the Alaskan Malamute, GCH CH Catanya’s Latin Lover. The Kuvazs, GCH CH Szumeria’s Wildwood Silver Six Pence, the Boxer R and G’s Mystical Dancer, and Tibetan Mastiff, GCH CH Shang-Hai's Shadow Of The Cascade rounded out the placements.

The Malamute, Ricky, has been among the top ten Working Dogs for the last three years, finishing 2011 with seven all breed Bests & 25 Working Groups. Congratulations to breeders Congratulations to breeder/owner P J Kendrick, owners Armando Martinez & Alisa Syar, and handler Mike Stone.

While yesterday’s Terrier Association Of Oregon show was not as large as the working group, it was one of the largest Terrier Groups seen in the last year with over 300 entries. It was the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH Steele Your Heart, grabbing the first place. Marjorie Underwood’s remaining placements were the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks a Peek, the Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH Ch Perrisblu Kennislain’s Chelsey, and the Border Terrier, GCH CH Meadowlake Simply Sinful.

The Wire, Eira, finished 2011 as AKC’s Number One Terrier with a come from behind December, compiling 17 BIS & 51 Terrier Group Firsts. Congratulations to breeders/owners Tori Steele & Mary Ann Roma, and handler Gabriel Rangel.

Everyone had a day to catch their breath and the well rested seven who made it to Joseph F Joly III’s final were the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm, the Longhaired Dachshund, CH Aviance Solo’s He’s The One SL, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall I Dream of Style, the Smooth Fox Terrier, CH J-Cobe Broxden Danae, the Italian Greyhound, GCH CH Bo-Bett’s Open Button, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the Beauceron, GCH CH Beowulf Rime des Monts du Lac.

Picking up the day six BIS was the Standard Poodle, London. It’s the second of the set and new year for London, the 2011 AKC/Eukanuba Champion. We predict that this will be one of the most exciting Westminsters on record.

We now have results from this past weekend’s Golden Triangle Kennel Club of Mississippi two shows. We are not sure why it takes so long to get results from the Magnolia State. With 315 dogs present & competing on Saturday, it couldn’t have been that difficult to compile the results. Nonetheless, as we have often said here, these “Boutique Shows” often draw major talent.

James Ham’s final seven on Saturday were the Clumber Spaniel, GCH CH Cajun’s A Change Is Gonna Come, the Saluki, GCH CH Sandstorm Blue Nile Bubbles of Jatara, the Boxer, GCH CH Breho Fortuity Shared Treasure, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, CH Empire n Divine’s Change in my Pocket, the Maltese, CH Chrisman’s Shiny Toy Gun, the Standard Poodle, CH Fantastico Da Maya, and the Australian Cattle Dog, GCH CH Dawn Heir’s He’s The Boss.

Day one belonged to the Saluki, Bubbles. Bubbles had one BIS and six Hound Groups in limited showing in 2011. We look for Bubbles and handler Erin Roberts to improve on that in 2012. Congratulations to Erin, breeder Kathleen Morton, and owners Sandra Middlebrook, Jackie Harrington & Sara Winsted.

On Sunday, Nancy Simmons saw the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Brookwood Diamond in the Ruff, the Whippet, CH Wildrbriar Whimsical of Longlesson, the aforementioned Boxer & Staffy Bull, the Pekingese, GCH CH Benaire’s N’Elphasun’s Razzmatazz, the above named Standard Poodle, and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Eden Crown’s Designer Label.

Her Best In Show was the Brazilian Import, the Standard Poodle, Fantastico. Fantastico was Brazil’s Number One Dog All Breeds in 2010 with 41 all breed BIS. Our congratulations on his first AKC show to breeder/owner Zuleika Torrealba and handler Christian Manelopoulos. We told you that there was major talent at these boutique shows.

MEET A FUTURE WINNER

Portland Metropolitan Exposition Center

The new show year is now in full swing with today being one of the few off days to be found in January. The Florida Marathon in Brooksville FL is enjoying the intermission between its two-five-show acts and will resume tomorrow with the Manatee Kennel Club’s second show of the stay. The Inverness Florida Kennel Club, the Tampa Bay Kennel Club, the Clearwater Kennel Club, & the Pasco Florida Kennel Club will all host an additional show before its all over.

The big prize this week is in Portland OR with more than 10,000 points up for grabs when the Tualatin Kennel Club launches its four-show collaboration with the Dog Fanciers Association Of Oregon on Thursday. Throw in two limited breed shows courtesy of the Terrier Association Of Oregon & the Mount Rainier Working Dog Club and a bucket full of specialties and you have one of the four biggest weekends of the year.

East Coast & Great Lakes Fanciers will also have four-show weekends beginning Thursday, the Annapolis Kennel Club & the Carroll Kennel Club in West Friendship MD and the Livonia Kennel Club & the Oakland County Kennel Club in Novi MI. Traditional two day weekends are available in Des Moines IA with the Central Iowa Kennel Club, in Rosenberg TX in with the Fort Bend Kennel Club., in Ventura CA with the San Fernando Kennel Club & the Ventura County Dog Fanciers Association, and in Ewa HI with the West Oahu Kennel Club.

If you are lucky enough to be in Portland OR this week stop in at the Portland Metropolitan Exposition Center and take in one of the most impressive dog shows held in the US. You may even get introduced to a future National Champion or Westminster BIS winner.

The Pasco Florida Kennel Club hosted their first round of the stay in Brooksville FL on day five of the Florida Marathon. Dr Carmen Battaglia greeted another surviving seven, the Weimaraner, GCH CH Northwood’s Send Money Honey, the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Thaon’s Wallstreet, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH D’s Devil Wears Prada, the Welsh Terrier, CH Geri’s Gales Baron Rojo, the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the Bouvier des Flandres, CH Austin Ally Van Aachen.

It was the 2011 AKC/Eukanuba National Champion, the Standard Poodle, London, roaring to the front of the pack. London and handler Ann Rairigh came from behind to finish an impressive sixth in the 2011 All Breeds race with 34 BIS and 91 Non-Sporting Groups. The show was chockablock full of BIS winning dogs, but the seven who made it to Kenneth Falconi’s final were the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Rottweiler, GCH CH Chancellor High Flyin Gladiator, the Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH CH Perrisblu Kennislain’s Chelsey, the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Dalarno Nite Song At Morningstar.

Today’s BIS was Florida resident, the MinPin, Classie. Classie gets the big head start on the field with a win worth 1500 points. Classie and owner/handler Armando Angelbello almost made it to the Top Ten Dogs All Breeds last year, finishing Number 12 with 21 all breed Bests and 73 Toy Groups. Valerie Brown, Billie Hayes, Doug Johnson, & Dr Bob Smith, went through over 500 Spaniels before sending the Boykin, GCH CH Sunseeker Pirate's Code, the GCH CH Rezod's Bad to the Bone, the Black Cocker, GCH CH Casablanca's Thrilling Seduction, the ASCOB Cocker, GCH CH Nickleby's Hero on the Hudson, the Parti-Color Cocker, GCH CH Afterglow Tristar, the English Cocker, CH Nonnies Dressed For Success, the English Springer, GCH CH Ocoee Dsqd With A Vengeance, the Field Spaniel, CH Nautica's Wind River Gold RN, the Sussex, CH Clussexx Pink Polka Dots WDX, JH, and the Welsh Springer CH Benton Ivy League, on to Marilyn Spacht to chose a Best Spaniel In Show.

Her choice was 2011’s Number One Dog All Breeds, the Black Cocker Spaniel, Beckham. It was the third consecutive ASC BIS for Beckham. Beckham finished last year with 68 all breed Bests and 148 Sporting group top prizes, shattering all records for a Black Cocker. Stephen Hubbell's final seven included the English Setter, GCH CH Oakley's B'Dazzled, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline's Chanel, the Boxer, GCH CH R and G's Mystical Dancer, Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH CH Perrisblu Kennislain's Chelsey, the Blenheim & Prince Charles English Toy Spaniel, GCH CH Royalist Ready to Reign, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore, and the Australian Cattle Dog, GCH CH Carben Copy's If The Shoe Fits.

Taking home the heavy silver and more than 3000 points was theEnglish Setter, Dazzle. Dazzle and handler Bruce Schultz finished 2011 with six BIS and40 Sporting Groups. Frank Sabella was in FL to kick off the show season in the Sunshine State For the Greater Daytona Dog Fanciers Association. The seven dogs making their first final of the rear were the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Cerise Tender Is The Night, the Whippet, GCH CH Sporting Fields Bahama Sands, the Great Dane, GCH CH Longo Miler n Lore Diamond Lil, the Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH CH Heritage Mickey Devine of Kilgawny, the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, the Bicon Frise, CH Glenleigh Gangs 'n Roses, and the Border Collie, GCH CH Sporting Fields Heiress HSAS.

Peter Green's final showcased the Weimaraner, GCH CH Northwood's Send Money Honey, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, CH Whirlaways Ida Belle's a Ringing, the Great Pyrenees, Saddle Ridge Power of Won, the SkyeTerrier, CH Of Skyeline's Captain Hook, the Shih Tzu, GCH CH Hallmark Jolei Austin Powers, the Standard Poodle, CH Hillwood Dassin Rock On By, and the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Quiche's Grand Finale.

There have been the occasional Palm Springs week when the weather wasn't perfect, but yesterday wasn't one of them. Today was the day for the Desert Empire Terrier Club of Southern California, the Toy Dog Breeders Association of Southern California, & the Sand to Sea Non-Sporting Association of Southern California limited breed shows and a plethora of local Specialty shows.

While we did spend most of the day enjoying the hospitality of DETCSC Show Chair, Dr John Low, we ducked out late in the afternoon to catch the SSNSASC Group judging. Dr Jerry Klein Group winner, was the Standard Poodle, GGCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore, handled beautifully by Taffee McFadden for Tim Brazier. Rounding out the placements were the Bulldog, GCH CH Itsa Brix, the Bichon Frise, GCH CH PaRay's Power & Privelege, and the French Bulldog, GCH CH LeBull Wooly Bully.

Ally & Tim started their 2011 campaign with an all breed BIS here in Palm Springs. We think it's just as lovely the second time around.

Beautiful Palm Springs CA

We’ve made our last run to the airport to drop off holiday visitors, packed away the Christmas decorations for another year, and now turn our attention to the coming week and our first dogs shows of the new year.

We will be at the legendary Empire Polo Grounds in Indio CA this first week in January for two of the largest shows we will see all year, the Kennel Club of Palm Springs two all breed offerings. We expect to see many of 2012’s serious contenders for the first time, vying for a share of the 6500 dogs available on Saturday & Sunday. As a bonus there are seven of the largest limited breed shows we will see all year, the Inland Empire Hound Club Of Southern California Friday show and Thursday/Friday twofers hosted by the Desert Empire Terrier Club Of Southern California, the Toy Dog Breeders Association Of Southern California, & the Sand To Sea Non-Sporting Association Of Southern California,

For those of you who can’t make it to California’s desert playground, there are plenty of regional contests to enjoy. The Land O' Lakes Kennel Club’s two weekend shows in St Paul MN will also feature Friday limited breed warm ups, the Northstar Working Group Association, the North Star Toy Dog Club, & the North Star Herding Group Club shows. The North Texas Non-Sporting Association will do the Friday kick off for the Nolan River Kennel Club’s Saturday/Sunday shows in Glen Rose TX, 80 miles southwest of Dallas.

There are three all breed shows for Great Lakes residents in Tallmadge OH starting Friday courtesy of the Columbiana County Kennel Club & the Rubber City Kennel Club. Finally weekend warriors will be in Clemson SC & Deland FL for traditional Saturday/Sunday fare with the Clemson Kennel Club & the Greater Daytona Dog Fanciers Association.

We hope you will join us and our Best In Show Daily partners on the Polo Grounds to help us celebrate the launch of our new site and to see 2012’s Top Dogs for the first time. We had Two Standard Poodles

in the Top Ten All Breeds

We don’t know if it’s the sentimentality of advanced age or just the wisdom that comes with the passing years, but we come each year to appreciate more each new place we visit, each new person we meet, and each new show dog we encounter. 2011 has been a year when we’ve been treated to many new friends, both the two legged and four legged kind.

When we look back on this year we marvel on what experiences life laid out for us. Three things that will remain in our scrapbook were the close races in individual breeds, in the individual Groups, and even in the all breed race; the number of breed records that fell during the year; and dramatically, the intervention of the very real natural world into our cloistered sporting world.

2011 Top Two Hounds

We had dramatic races in the breed in English Springer Spaniels, Maltese, & Standard Poodles. The Poodles were especially interesting as both the Number One & Two, GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore & GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, were in the Top Ten All Breed Dogs. Also galloping toward the finish line were two Hounds, another pair in the Top Ten, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel & the Pharaoh Hound, GCH CH Northgate’s As You Like It, with the Whippet pulling ahead in the stretch.

Lurking just outside the Top Ten were the Top Two Herding Dogs, the German Shepherd, GCH CH Babheim’s Captain Crunch, & the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins, who ended the year separated by just a handful of points. We also had a down to the wire race in the Terrier Group between the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks a Peek, & the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH Steele Your Heart, with the Wire pulling out in front the last week of the year.

We had several breed records set during the year. In addition to the aforementioned Pharaoh Hound & Whippet, the 15” Beagle, GCH CH Torquay Midnight Confession, also set a breed record 45 career BIS this year. Another Top Ten Dog that finished the year as the breed record holder was the Kuvasz, GCH CH Szumeria’s Wildwood Silver Six Pence. Though they failed to make it to the top in all breed points, both the Skye Terrier, GCH CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman, and the above named Beardie, captured the most Group Ones in their respective Groups while setting new breed records, the Skye breaking an almost 40 year old record.

Lightening in Florida, Floods in New Jersey

Finally, we started the year with show cancellations in Florida caused by severe thunderstorms & lightening, endured September interruptions in New Jersey caused by flooding, and finished with show stopping November blizzards in New England. Nonetheless, exhibitors and fanciers returned to the ring unabated, finishing the year with a record setting AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando FL.

We think this has been our favorite year. Did we mention that we also welcomed our second grandchild, Olivia Willow Wheeler, to the family on November 16th? A very good year.

West Coast dog fanciers finished out the old year at the site of the 2010 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, Long Beach CA. You can read our report on Friday’s Beverly Hills Kennel Club show here.

The Los Encinos Kennel Club took over on Saturday and gave Carolyn Cederman her pick of the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Otein Cap'n Jack Sparrow, the Bloodhound, GCH CH Quiet Creek's Kiss And Tell, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Fishbay's Faith Hope And Love, the Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH CH Perrisblu Kennislain's Chelsey, the Long Coat Chihuahua, GCH Kokura Yama JP Silent Rose, the Keeshond, GCH CH Summerwind's Rumor Has It, and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Aellen Jive Talkin'.

Her BIS was OUR DOG2WATCH, the Kerry, Chelsey. Chelsey and handler Bill McFadden now have as many BIS as all the other Kerries in the US combined, five. We like that.

GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore

Sunday, it was Ken McDermott in the final ring for the Long Beach Kennel Club. Back for one more try at the last big rosette of the season were Chelsey, the aforementioned Bloodhound, & Portie, the English Setter, GCH CH Set'r Ridge's Exclusively Gold, the Shih Tzu, GCH CH Peking Midnight Vision At Wenshu, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore, and the Australian Cattle Dog, GCH CH Carben Copy's If The Shoe Fits.

It was the winner of the Friday BHKC show, the Standard Poodle, Ally closing the season with her 46th Best In Show. Ally finishes the year as AKC’s Number Four Dog All Breeds.

BIS went to the country’s Number One Maltese, Henry. Henry waited all year to pick up his first BIS two weeks ago, but finishes the year with a flourish bringing home his second all breed Best of the year.

As always they close the weekend in style in Jackson MS with Terry Carter doing the MSKC day two final. Hoping to get their last big rosette of the year were the Maltese, Henry, the above named Golden, Saluki, Norwich, & Collie, the Samoyed, CH Polar Mist Cruz'n T' Party At Zamosky, and the Dalmatian, GCH CH Lakeshore's Tail Of Two Cities. Topping off his 2011 resume with his second Best In Show of the Golden, Jerry Lee.

We congratulate the two kennel clubs on their great hospitality. If you can't make it to Orlando for the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, this is a great alternative.

As bittersweet as it is, we bring to your our final Monday Morning Mop up of 2011. We start in Allentown PA where the Delaware Water Gap Kennel Club celebrated the end of the season. Bruce Schwartz was on hand to close out the year with the Vizsla, CH Elgincariad Dorratz Kindofblue, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Jaroe Legend Of Irish Spirit, the Cairn Terrier, GCH CH Rocco's Collar King Carl XVI Gustaf, the Pekingese, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, the Miniature Poodle, GCH CH Surrey Sugar Baby, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Begendorf's Sambucca.

The Number Two Dog All Breeds, the Peke, Malachy, took home his 49th big rosette of the year. A hush came over the crowd in Orlando FL while it waited for Polly Smith’s seven finalists at tonight’s Eleventh Annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. The last seven standing were the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrill Seduction, the Harrier, GCH CH Downhome Hitech Innovator, the Boxer, GCH CH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream, the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH Steele Your Heart, the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Babheim’s Captain Crunch.

Each of the night‘s competitors showed no sign of lagging at the late hour and received enthusiastic applause and they swept around the ring individually. Each one gave a BIS worthy performance. However, there can only be one National Champion and 2011’s is the Standard Poodle, London. London never put a foot wrong during the evening, impressing judge and gallery alike. Certainly one of the most prestigious events in the global world of the dog is the AKC World Challenge. Tonight was made special for the home crowd by the presence of three of our past Nationally Ranked Dogs 2009’s Number One Toy Dog, the Toy Poodle, GCH CH Smash Jp Moon Walk, last year’s Number One Dog All Breeds, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, and 2009‘s Number Three Dog, the Puli, CH Cordmaker Field of Dreams.

Argentinian judge Enrique Filippini chose as his winner the United States entry, the Australian Shepherd, GCH CH Propwash Reckon, and the Japanese entry, the Toy Poodle, Walker, & the English entry, the Lhasa Apso, CH Zentarr Elizabeth as his Runner Up and First Runner Up, respectively.
